After a recent experiment with a website review app….a couple of things really hit home. The biggest was the fact that mobile users strongly dislike our format. The tables are just too big for 70% of the people that you use mobile devices to surf the internet. We were actually able to watch people use our website (saw Bob post a comment in real time) Mobile people, are on average, only spending 6 seconds on the site…before they abandon the page. Time after time I saw a mobile user, enter the site….give it a quick scan down….reach the table and exit the site. So…..
We are making some changes. This John Wayne page is the direction we are headed. More information will now be shared….but the beauty of all on one page is gone. The page will be broken down into numerous pages…in this case….6 pages.
One of the benefits is worldwide grosses will be included on all box office pages and they will be dynamic instead of the static lists I have used. We now have the option to include even more financial numbers from the ledgers….things like cost, profit and profit margin. Mobile users can now read all of the tables with the exception of one table.
For long time readers that like the “big tables” that show almost all the stats….we are keeping those tables…..those tables will be listed on the parent/default/main link page. There will always be two tables on that page….the second will be the table you and I like so much. All the information with the exception of Possibly Interesting Facts will remain on those tables….so you will not have to click all the links.
So that is what we are thinking…..would be real curious what long time readers think…..figured John Wayne was a good one to start with.
I think you should add this comment to the post. I think it is pretty big announcement and it is only on a comment, which will quickly be off the page and lost among all the other comments. I must admit when you first doing pages like this a couple of weeks, I did not like it all. On return trips to your George Segal page I started to like the information being broken up into different sections. So I guess I am saying, like many old people like myself, we do not like change. I think in time, this will be a good decision for you. I do like the more subtle links versus the ones used on the Segal pages. Basically, I am saying, I do not really like the change, but I feel I will get used to it pretty quickly.
Hey….that is a great suggestion…..I will see if I can remember that in the morning. Good point about people and change, I agree with you 100%.
I am a mobile user. The columns now show up on my phone. I always had to change some settings and rotate my phone to see the whole table. But admit, sometimes I just looked at the movie titles and did not bother to change those settings. So I welcome the changes.
Hey Helakoski…..glad you can see the information better. I will have to do some current stars soon…..as I know classic stars are not your favorites.
