July 22nd – UMR Dunkirk Review

Why I watched this one? Great reviews…and this was the 8th Christopher Nolan movie I have seen in theaters and the 10th Nolan movie that I have watched.

What is this one about? Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire and France are surrounded by the German army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.

My thoughts on this one? I am going to be in the minority here….but I thought this movie was alright but far from the greatness that I have been reading about. The fractured timeline was bothersome. The lack of getting to know any of the characters enough to care about them was frustrating. Some of the action scenes are difficult to follow. But my biggest issue is the lack of emotion this movie created in me. I felt this was going to be an emotional roller coaster….instead….only one time did the movie make me fill the human drama of the real situation.

On the good side of things. This movie looks amazing. The scope of the movie is impressive with 1000s of extras and limited CGI. Hans Zimmer’s music is outstanding…..an Oscar nomination is coming his way for sure. Mark Rylance has the best role in the movie…..I wish they would have given him more to do or say. Final thought: Glad I saw this one…but the re-watch value is limited.

Some observations while watching the movie…with some modest spoilers.
1. Good to hear Michael Caine’s voice in the movie….as he has uncredited voice role in this one. The 7th time or 70% of Nolan’s movies…..that Caine has been involved in a Nolan movie.
2. Caine’s character suffers the same fate as his character in 1969’s Battle of Britain.
3. Tom Hardy is hard to understand in this movie…like his character in The Dark Knight Rises …..Nolan has something blocking his mouth so it is hard to hear him.
4. Tom Hardy’s plane is amazing……it works just as well with gas as it does without gas.
5. Tom Hardy shoots down 4 or 5 German planes and bombers in this movie…..like Ben Affleck in Pear Harbor….he is winning the war all by himself.
6. Kenneth Branagh’s entire performance takes place on a pier.
7. There is an action scene involving a beached fishing trawler that makes no sense whatsoever.

Ranked 6th of 10 movies on my Christopher Nolan Movie Ranking Page. www.ultimatemovierankings.com/christopher-nolan-movies/
