July 23rd – Need Classic Movie Help In Possibly Identifying An Actress

Attended WoC’s Uncle Gus’ funeral this weekend.   At one point during the weekend we were looking through some of his old pictures.  We found the following picture from Auburn’s Tiger Theater.  The picture looks like it was taken between 1945 and 1950.  Back then, the studios sent out their actors to promote films….sometimes they ended up at the 715 seat Tiger theater.  WoC’s granddad is in the middle….it is possible….that the people on the left and right might be actors.  So the question is….can anybody identify either person?  I feel I disappointed the family when I could not identify the lady by the microphone…any help would be greatly appreciated…..if only to redeem myself in my family’s eyes.

  1. MovieCollector is spot on. Here is the same poster promoting the film in Philadelphia:

      1. It’s pretty cool you were able to find that photo of the same scene but from a different POV/ camera.

  2. I noticed the unfinished look about the stage too. Not that uncommon back then, outside of Hollywood. That was before the days of technical theater grads and rolls of black scrim on hand to cover unfinished or uneven surfaces for a more professional appearance on temporary staging. One of the things we take for granted these days – I just did a picture search for black scrim and got a bunch of results targeted at wedding DJs. LOL

  3. And too, in a way, looks like JO STAFFORD. And that homemade looking riser she’s standing on makes me think it’s from some kind of USO show or some other kind of benefit( war bond sales promotion perhaps). And those guys behind her possibly just a couple of local officials of some kind.

    1. Hey Sepiatone…..good thoughts…..the guy in the middle is my wife’s grandfather…..he was the manager of the Tiger Theater from 1932 to 1959. So your guess of “And those guys behind her possibly just a couple of local officials of some kind” is 100% correct at least with the guy in the middle.

      1. The guy on the right doesn’t look ready to be on stage, like the female singer appears to be. You’d think a man who was a performer by trade would look a little more at ease/ready to flash that winning smile. So I’m thinking he’s a local or something as well, since he appears to be kind of zoned out.

  4. At first glance I thought it was Claudette Colbert but nope I have no idea who that is.

I tried google images focusing on just her head and neck but nothing came up.

Maybe she was just a local celebrity?

    1. Hey Steve……I am beginning to think…..that the “Steve” that has had a few comments is not “Steve Lensman”…….I guess it is only fair….as we have Bob and his many aliases and bob cox…..so we have room for Steve Lensman and Steve. Now we just need to find another Flora…lol.

Thanks for the Colbert suggestion and for looking at google images….you might be correct….she might be a local celebrity…..I should probably include this photo and some of the other ones we found on my father-in-laws interview page….seems Auburn people discover that page pretty often.

      Thanks for the comment.

      1. Another Steve nooooo… who is this impostor?! 😉

I always include both my names when commenting here and elsewhere, even when I use aliases I include two names never one. Looks nicer, people pay attention to you more if it looks like a real name (I wished).

        1. Thanks for clearing that up. I think Steve is a pretty popular name…..actually just looked it up….Steve was a top 10 name from 1955 to 1961 (it was 10th every year)….and a Top 25 name from 1947 to 1978……it has fallen on hard times since then…Falling out of the Top 100 in 2008….and now dropping to 182nd…..it’s worst ranking since 1938. Seems Steve’s starting to rise in 1939….I wonder why? I am guessing Steve Trevor from the Wonder Woman comics?….this is the reason I love the internet….this information is just sitting there waiting to be looked up.

Meanwhile….Bruce has only had one year in which he cracked the Top 25…and now sits in 430th place…poor Bruces

  5. Hello ,
The first name which came is Miss Jeannette Mac Donald, and may be it was during the war when stars went everywhere in the country to get money like Lombard, Dietrich etc
By the way it is so hot in France, that i take a very ice glass of Minuty which is a very good rosé , à votre santé…
    Bye
    Pierre

    1. Hey Pierre….thanks for the Jeannette MacDonald suggestion….you are the second person to think it is her. If that was her…..wow…..that would have been a huge think for little Auburn to get…as she was one of the biggest stars out there. Sorry it is so hot in France…..it has actually been pretty good for us this summer….but I am sure I just ended that…..lol…..as we will get some sweltering days now. Enjoy your rosé , à votre santé.
