July 23rd – Need Classic Movie Help In Possibly Identifying An Actress

Attended WoC’s Uncle Gus’ funeral this weekend.   At one point during the weekend we were looking through some of his old pictures.  We found the following picture from Auburn’s Tiger Theater.  The picture looks like it was taken between 1945 and 1950.  Back then, the studios sent out their actors to promote films….sometimes they ended up at the 715 seat Tiger theater.  WoC’s granddad is in the middle….it is possible….that the people on the left and right might be actors.  So the question is….can anybody identify either person?  I feel I disappointed the family when I could not identify the lady by the microphone…any help would be greatly appreciated…..if only to redeem myself in my family’s eyes.

  1. Instead of commenting on any of the pages, I tried to find out who the mysterious lady is last night. She really looks familiar, and I was certain that she must have been a minor leading lady/B movie actress. But after checking google pics and quite a few books, I was still none the wiser 🙁
Of the possibilities mentioned, I would opt for Marion Hutton, but I wouldn’t bet my movie collection on it. Sorry, would have loved to be more helpful!

  2. I don’t think the young woman standing between Gus & Hearst (on far right) is Linda Christian even though she appeared in the movie “Green Dolphin Street” . He doesn’t indicate whether the two pictures were taken on the same day, so one may have nothing to do with the other.

I’m fairly certain the woman holding the mic in the other pic is Marion Hutton. Been googling images of her and she seems known for that pompadour hairdo. She was a singer w/Glenn Miller band and then Tex Beneke band. She may have been on a tour promoting “Love Happy” (1949), in which she appeared w/the Marx Bros. or “In Society” in 1942, appearing w/Abbott & Costello.

The clothing is kind of oxymoronic. The skirt length in the second pic definitely indicates late 40’s as do the ‘baggy’ men’s double-breasted, large-lapeled, cuffed suits. But the pompadour hairdo on the woman holding the mic says: early 40’s. ???

Cogerson, forgive me if you’ve already tried this, but try contacting Auburn Historical Society, Auburn Theater Facebook page or any other venue you can ferret out by Googling.

This mystery’s got me wondering, too!

    1. Hey Zea….these pictures where in box in a closet…..there was no rhyme or reason to how they were in the box….so there could be years between the two photos. I like your Holmes dedications on the hairdos and the different suites and dresses. Marion Hutton seems like a good suggestion….as I have looking at old photos of her too. Been trying to find which actress went with the ship in the Green Dolphin photo. The Auburn Historical Society might be a good place to check out. The next time we are in Auburn….I might have to go to the library and see what kinds of files they have on the old newspaper coverage in the 1940s. Your efforts and thoughts are appreciated.

  3. With all those bikes just parked there (probably not a bicycle lock on any of them) this photo really is reflective of a more innocent, trusting time in a small town. The movie being shown stars one of my childhood TV heroes, Ramar of the Jungle (at least the actor would soon take on that role the year after this film was made).

    1. Last Train From Bombay is kind of a mess of a film. Indian terrorists want to assassinate the Nawob of Janipur by blowing up the Gundar train. If you can understand that, you might like the flick. Hall, as a diplomat, endures so many mishaps that he should have been sent to the Black Hole of Calcutta. Also, his buttockal area rivals that of George Brent. But I did like him, as you did, in Ramar of the Jungle.

    2. Hey Tom….you are so right…it is from another time…a very trusting time. Glad you liked the photo and thanks for the information on the movie playing at the Tiger.

  4. So then is the woman in the middle of the picture Linda Christian? Or are the center two (the woman and the man on her left) contest winners, perhaps?

    1. Hey Lawrence A. I think you are right….been looking at photos of Linda Christian from that time frame and it really looks like her. Plus I could see the studio sending her to Auburn instead of the bigger stars like Lana Turner, Van Heflin and Donna Reed. So I think it is safe to say that this mystery photo has been solved.
