Hey Dan
1. Thanks for the these lists….they are greatly appreciated.
2. Yes..Richard Herd was on T.J.Hooker…..IMDb has him listed in 36 episodes.
3. When I first saw that photo…I thought they had gotten the photo wrong….but then I read the title of the photo….and I realized that they did look alike.
4. Growing up, I only knew him as a television star….so seeing that he was in the Top 400 on the 2000 list is surprising.
5. Two Top 10 co-stars…and those two Caine and Sutherland keep making movies……which makes me happy.
6. The second list is massive….I am sure Flora and Bob are happy to see Richard Widmark’s name show up so many times.
7. 47 Oscar winning co-stars is one of the best totals yet…..which I also find surprising.
Good lists….thanks again for sharing them.
HI FLORA
Naturally I’m disappointed that you don’t list any of the Brando/Malden films among your favourites but as the saying goes “I would defend to the death your right” to enjoy what you like and to say what you do or do not enjoy.
Anyway there are many positives in the tastes that you and I DO share such as Greg, Glenn and Richard W. Steve and I both share Chuck Heston and [it surprised me recently to learn] Brando as people we like. Bruce [Cogerson] and I both have Sir Michael Caine as an idol and although Bruce Willis is not in my top 20 I still enjoy watching him and admire him as an all round action hero, actor and comedian [in the Friends TV sitcom as I’ve said many times on this site]. But then again Bruce C and I disagree about Joel Hirschhorn on films and yet ironically I like Joel as a music critic
Also you may have seen recently Steve expressing surprise at some of my own tastes and my arguing with him that it will always be the case that “one person’s meat is another one’s poison”. It would be a boring old world if we all liked the same idols/movies.
Hope all is going well with you. I’ve been following your other recent comments and you seem to be in fine form.
Hi, Bob.
Yes, I have been following your conversation with Steve. It would indeed be boring if we all loved the same actors/films. As for Brando, I do enjoy Teahouse of the August Moon, Guys and Dolls and Julius Caesar.
HI FLORA
Thanks for your reply
Apparently when Brando died and they went to clear out his effects the only one of his own films that they found among his DVD collection was Guys and Dolls, so he would probably have said that you had good taste in respect of that film !
Hey Bob….though not a musical fan at all….I did enjoy Guys and Dolls…..and I am not ashamed to admit…lol. Interesting that was one of his movies he had in his DVD collection…good trivia for sure.
HI BRUCE
You will have seen from my exchanges with Flora that when Brando died the only one of his own movies they found among his DVDs was Guys and Dolls.
I read elsewhere that 1969’s Burn [aka Quiemada] was his personal fave but it struck me that maybe at one time he had a lot of his own movies in that collection and then he came across Joel’s book and decided the rest weren’t worth keeping !!
As it was the DVD collection consisted almost entirely of silent comedies featuring the likes of Charlie and the Kops. Pity Mumbles grew to hate Chaplin when they made Countess from Hong Kong. Apparently one of Marlon’s gripes with The Little Tramp was that the latter insisted on directing his fellow Legend as if he were a beginner. Maybe Chaplin too had been privy to some of Joel’s critiques! Ah the egos of the supposed Greats!
Anyway “it’s an ill wind that blows nobody some good” and your pointing out that Flora had excluded Brando from her faves gave me the opportunity to have a chat with her and I always like that. Take care.
Hey Bob…..so I am guessing you did notice that Flora had shut the door on the Brando/Malden movies. Although she did say she liked those movies…just not her favorites. Speaking of Peck and Widmark….they are well represented on this Malden page…I still need to add some trailer pages to those movies. Speaking of Joel…I was looking through his book….Rating The Movie Stars (maybe you have heard of that one)…when I stumbled across one of his assessments on one of your favorites….and this time…I think….be still my beating heart….you will agree with him. Good stuff from you as always.
I saw 17 including top 8, tens on the waterfront, streetcar named desire, patton(favourite) , how the west was won(favourite). no hidden gems
Hey bob cox….thanks for sharing your thoughts on Karl Malden movies. Tally count: Flora 26, me 22, Steve 18 and you, 17. As for your favorites….I like On The Waterfront, Patton and How The West Was Won (my Blu-Ray of that movie looks incredible)…..as for Streetcar Named Desire…it is a classic movie that has bored me to tears on my three viewings….I do keep trying to see what all the fuzz is about. Maybe one day, the other Bob, will wear off on me, and I will see the light. Good stuff.
Karl Malden eh, interesting choice. How many films with Brando? I count 3. Must have been buddies. Or were until One Eyed Jacks came along.
I’ve seen 18 of the 48 films on the chart. Favorites – the much loved classic ‘Meteor’, Patton, The Gunfighter, Kiss of Death, On the Waterfront and How the West Was Won.
Phantom of the Rue Morgue is an interesting horror, loosely based on Poe’s Murders in the Rue Morgue and released in 3D and full color. WB was hoping to repeat the success of Vincent Price’s House of Wax. It’s been years since I last watched it.
Hmm Malden’s top rated films – Patton and On the Waterfront, starring two actors who refused the Oscar.
Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up!
Hey Steve
1. Thanks for the tally, the comment, the vote up and for sharing your thoughts on Mr. Malden.
2. Tally count: Flora 26, me 22, you 18 and bob cox 17…..all decent tally counts.
3. Malden has defended Brando in numerous interviews….so I think they got along just fine on One-Eyed….even though their characters had some major issues with each other…lol.
4. Good to see Meteor on your favorites list…I have been thinking it is time to re-watch that one….been decades since seeing it….it is always associated with The Swarm in my mind.
5. The Gunfighter is an underappreciated western…..I think The Shootist borrowed heavily from that one.
6. Good information on Rue Morgue…..and good trivia on Malden’s two Best Picture Oscar winning movies…..though Brando actually was very excited about getting his first Oscar.
Good feedback as always.
Thanks for adding the comment box, Bruce!
I love Karl Maldon films. I have seen 26 Karl Maldon movies.
The HIGHEST rated film I have seen is On The Waterfront.
The highest rated film I have NOT seen is Patton.
The LOWEST rated film I have seen is Wild Rovers.
Maldon made a lot of films with Richard Widmark that I enjoy.
Favourite Maldon movies:
The Gunfighter
How the West Was Won
Take The High Ground
Halls of Montezuma
Kiss of Death
Birdman of Alcatraz
The Cincinnati Kid
I Confess
Cheyenne Autumn
Hotel
Hey Flora….thanks for checking out our Karl Malden page. I feel good that my tally is pretty close to your tally. I have seen 22 to your 26. My first miss is #9 Kiss of Death….yes I hide my head in shame for not seeing that one. I have seen the David Caruso version of that one….does it count?…lol.
My lowest rated Malden movie seen is Meteor and Beyond the Posideon Adventure….two truly bad movies. I noticed that Malden was in many movies with Widmark. I will have to add those trailers into the page. Malden actually directed Widmark’s Time Limit. Malden also has an uncredited director credit for The Hanging Tree.
As for your favorites….I have seen all of them except for Hotel and Cheyenne Autumn. My favorites would be On The Waterfront, The Cincy Kid, Birdman of Alcatraz and Billion Dollar Brain…the last of the Harry Palmer trilogy. Good feedback as always.
P.S. I wonder if Bob will notice that none of the Brando/Malden movies made your favorites list.
Bruce – Bob may indeed notice that none of the Brando/Malden movies made my favourites list. They are movies I admire but do not enjoy. I’ve seen all of them.
Another movie that I did not include on my favourites list is Gypsy. It is rare that a musical does not make that list. I have seen the movie several times, but the stage mother story line makes me uncomfortable. That said, if Gypsy is on TCM in the evening I generally watch it anyway.
Hey Flora….thanks for explaining the absence of the Brando movies on your favorites list. I do not like Streetcar at all….On The Waterfront is a much better movie…and One-Eyed Jacks is growing on me. I have seen Gypsy one time….and it was a one and done movie for me. Good feedback as always.
