For comments….all you need is a name and a comment….please ignore the rest.
The first film that came to mind when I saw Kathryn Grayson’s name is Kiss Me Kate so I was a bit surprised to see it at no.8 on the UMR chart, but it did reach no.1 on the critics chart.
I’ve seen just 6 of the 20 films listed, favorites include – Kiss Me Kate, Anchors Aweigh and Show Boat. I bought Kiss Me Kate on 3D Blu-ray a couple of years ago. I liked the trivia on the spanking scene from that film.
Looking at the adjusted worldwide grosses… whoa musicals were hugely successful during the 40s , Anchors Aweigh over half a billion dollars worldwide, Thousands Cheer, Till the Clouds Roll By and Ziegfeld Follies all big moneymakers. MGM was the biggest studio in town in Hollywoods glory days.
Another great movie page Bruce. Voted Up!
Hey Steve
1. Thanks for checking out our latest page….it is always appreciated.
2. The march for 1000 starts…as this was UMR page 501…..we are almost there…lol.
3. Kiss Me Kate….was her 12th biggest hit….got very little Oscar love (one nomination)….but it’s stellar reviews pulled it into the Top 10.
4. Of the 5 comments so far….Kiss Me Kate has been mentioned 3 times already…so maybe I should check that one out.
5. Yep Kiss Me Kate was in 3D…I wonder how many musicals are 3D….apparently they throw lots of stuff at the screen….which makes me really interested in seeing that. I know you also have Dial M For Murder on 3D….how do those transfer…and how are the 3D effects look?
6. Her worldwide stats are pretty impressive…over a quarter of a billion on average per movie…finding all of her stats was actually pretty easy…thank you MGM.

Hey Flora….glad you discovered your Grayson request…..you made this request many moons ago….I think it was on our massive musical page we did almost a year ago. Two Sisters From Boston was a pretty massive hit…yet it rarely gets mentioned these days….so I am not surprised that one has escaped you. As for The Kissing Bandit…that one almost ended Sinatra’s career…it certainly took him to a new low…..but From Here To Eternity saved him
I have only seen one of her movies…but good to see Anchors Aweigh in your Top 5. Seems I need to check out Kiss Me Kate in the near future. Current tally counts.

Very interesting list. I personally don’t agree with the rankings but they are fascinating nonetheless. One of the Grayson films I’m fond of gets little respect anywhere. I refer to SO THIS IS LOVE. She was wonderful in a very dramatic role.
Thanks Dan…. the beauty of this table is that you can sort the movies anyway you want. For example….sort by box office Till The Clouds Roll By barely holds off Anchors Aweigh. Sort by critic/audience reviews and Kiss Me Kate sits first. Sort by biggest hit of a year..Show Boat is #1. By most Oscar love it is Anchors Aweigh….in the end it is just about getting the stats out there. Sorry So This Is Love did not score better….but it is one of my mom’s favorites. Still….I greatly appreciate the feedback.
Fascinating information, Bruce. If you are responsible for compiling it, you are to be congratulated. I knew Kathryn and interviewed her. She was a lovely person. She generously shared many details on the making of her films. with me. The original script for SO THIS IS LOVE was a full fledged biography of Grace Moore, but when her husband complained about the portrayal of him, it was paired back. One wonders how it might have impacted Kathryn’s career if she had been allowed to play the rich dramatic part as it was originally written. She was terribly disappointed by the alterations, but still contributes a memorable performance.
Hey Dan….My wife and I have been operating this hobby website since 2011. It is a fantastic source (I know I am biased) for classic movies. We are closing in on 10 million views…not too bad for a mom and pop operation that only relies on word of mouth for new visits. That is very cool that you got to meet her and a chance to interview her. Interesting background on So This Is Love. You are right…maybe a more complex role would have opened up more doors for her.
Love this. Thanks for giving one of my all time favourites some attention. Love this table which is filled with some awesome Grayson statitiscs. Not sure I buy Anchors Awheigh as her best but it certainly made some coin. My favorite Grayson movie is Kiss Me Kate. She looked and sounded so lovely in that one. Thanks for linking this at facebook.
Hey Michael S. Glad you enjoyed our Kathryn Grayson movie page. We aim to please when it comes to including stats on classic movie stars. No arguments here about you disagreeing on our rankings….it is just a fun way to include all the stats into one formula….but you can rank the movies many ways. Your favorite….Kiss Me Kate is actually the Top Movie when you sort all of her movies by Critic/Audience Rating. Facebook was very kind to this page yesterday….so I am very glad I shared the link there.
She had a lovely voice. She stopped making movies because she said they were not making musicals anymore. I never understood why she did not perform on stage. Show Boat was on TCM today. I have seen 9 of these movies. Canada strikes first. GOOD JOB ON THIS PAGE.
Hey BERN1960….thanks for the comment, visit and tally. I actually did not notice why she stopped making movies…I will have to check that out. Good timing on my part to publish her page on the same day one of her biggest hits was on TCM. So you have seen almost 9 of her movies…let’s see where that ranks.
