Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

Recently I was re-reading William Goldman’s The Big Picture: Who Killed Hollywood? and Other Essays.  In that book I kept noticing that Goldman kept referring to Kevin Costner (1955-) as one of the most powerful and successful actors working in Hollywood.  That got me to think about two things.  (1) Yes indeed from 1987 to 1993…Kevin Costner was the main man in Hollywood.  He was ranked as a Top 10 Film Star from 1990 to 1993…and topped the rankings in 1991. (2)  Maybe it was time to finally do Macklte33’s request for a Kevin Costner page….since you are reading this page then you know that I followed through with that thought.

His IMDb page shows over 65 acting credits since 1981. This page will rank 41 Kevin Costner movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, cameos and movies that were not released in North American theaters were not included in the rankings.

  1. Hi
It’s hard to believe in 1991, Costner was the man, he just won the Oscar with Dances with Wolves. Ahead of him was Robin Hood, JFK and The Bodyguard. And within a few years he was no longer a big name. Are the public so fickle that a couple of bad movies finish your career, it seems to be the case! I really enjoyed Tin Cup and Message in a Bottle. Both modest hits but never to the scale of his earlier movies.
At his peak he was the new James Stewart/ Gary Cooper All American hero. Sadly he seems to belong to a group of stars who’s position faded very quickly. People like Ryan O Neill, Burt Reynolds, William Hurt. At one time, big box office stars, but then things just start to fade. Bradley Cooper watch out! Hopefully Costner will get a comeback, maybe even a good supporting role. He was the best thing in Superman. Michael Keaton returned from the dead after so many years so its possible. Of course, sustaining it is another thing.
There’s a new idea for a new page, comebacks!

    1. Hey Chris….I agree it is shocking that has been almost a quarter of a century since Costner was the King of Hollywood. I think he was closer to Cooper than Stewart. I have always wanted to do a page that compared current performers with classic performers…I will add Costner as the new Cooper in my “idea notebook”. Bradley Cooper has already had two flops since American Sniper….so yes he needs to watch out. Keaton seems to be taking his time since Birdman…I think he might be running out of time to capitalize on that success. Comebacks….sounds like a good idea….thanks for the visit and the suggestions.

  2. Hey Bruce, plenty of facts and stats I didn’t know about Costner, well done mate.
Have to confess I haven’t seen Fandango. I think Silverado was the first movie I saw him in, or it might have been American Flyers. I’ve seen 23 of the 36 films you’ve listed. No Way Out was a favorite back in the 80’s. Other favorites include The Untouchables, Dances with Wolves, Robin Hood, JFK and Waterworld. Recent films I’ve liked him in were Man of Steel and 3 Days to Kill. For a while back in the 90’s Costner was top box office but it didn’t last, the glory days are gone, same thing happened to Mel, Sly and Arnie. Tom Cruise is the only big star of the 80’s to still be a bankable superstar. Thanks for the link Bruce, voted up.

    1. Hey Steve…thanks for the visit and the comment. To me he, In the mid 1980s he was known as the guy who got his part cut in The Big Chill. He went from being edited out of The Big Chill to king of Hollywood in only 7 years…which is pretty impressive. I have seen 33 of his movies…with For The Love of the Game and Black and White being the two that I have not seen. I agree Tom Cruise just keeps on rolling as the stars fall off that A list…Tom just keeps smiling and making blockbuster after blockbuster. As always thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  3. Hi Bruce
I really like Kevin Costner. He has made some great movies – Dances.., Robin Hood, JFK, The Baseball Trilogy, i even like The Postman (I still think the first trailer killed off it’s box office potential). Anyway…great actor and I never really thought about him not doing sequels (and you’ve got to give him credit for that)
    As always, great work.

    1. Hey Soren Moss….thanks for stopping by and commenting. I think The Postman is the movie that ended his incredible run….most people probably think it was Waterworld….but Waterworld actually did pretty well at the box office when it was finally done with it’s box office run. My favorite Costner movie is the little known Fandango. When I was younger it was a movie that my friends and I watched all the time….there are so many lines in that movie….that I use on regular basis still to this day. I found that he had not appeared in any sequels pretty amazing too. I bet if Jack Ryan had done better he would have ended that streak.

      1. I LOVED Fandango!!! I saw that and American Flyers and saw a whole different actor coming to our screen! I’ve always been happy with Kevin Not doing sequels, that makes him stand out as non-repetitive but always back and better. The only sequel considered was with Bodyguard…and Diana. I met him last year and had a less than 10 minute chat. such a wonderful guy.

        1. Hey Annie….glad to know somebody else likes Fandango too. I think you are correct The Bodyguard seemed like a perfect sequel/franchise for him….kudos to him for being able to resist the sequels. That is awesome that you were able to actually have a quick conversation with him….thanks for sharing and thanks for visiting my page.
