  1. HI BRUCE

1 Thanks for the feedback. If you get a chance please look in on my 15 June post to Steve about his Russell Crowe video on Russell’s pwn Cogerson page. I would be interested in your take on Mr Mumbles sending the pugilistic Crowe a book about “gentle” men.

2 Also surprising me was Russell’s claim that the Brando friend who delivered the poetry volume said that Bud regarded Crowe as his favourite actor and so wanted him to have the book. I read elsewhere that DeNiro was MB’s favourite US actor and that TV performer Peter Bowles was Marlon’s best liked British actor..

3 Perhaps old Mumbles took a leaf from the book of English TV performer Sir Bruce Forsyth who when interviewing all of the contestants on his television dance show told each and every one of them in turn “YOU are my favourite!”

4 We’ve miss your feedbacks but your health comes first. I remember my surgeon telling me
“I’ll help you all I can but the person who first and foremost has responsibility for ensuring your good health is YOU.” Anyway I hope the neck is feeling better.

  2. I was out on the Eastern end of Long Island couple of days and the internet was terrible. Kevin Spacey is # 346 on the 2016 Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. These are all the people on the list he has appeared in a film with.

    1. Hey Dan….good lists as always….I greatly appreciate the information. Surprised he has only worked with 3 of the Top 10. 43 Oscar winning co-stars is a pretty good total. Have you noticed not many if these stars reach 50? Good feedback.

      1. I know your pain of having terrible internet service when away on trips or vacations. Just think only 20 years ago internet service was not even remotely close to being an issue when thinking about traveling….ah the addiction of being connected…lol.

        1. Oscar winning co-stars. Caine and a few others reach 50 and above…but most like Spacey are between 30 and 46 Oscar co-stars.

  3. Hey Bruce, Thanks for another page on a very talented actor – I am wondering if Kevin Spacey is coming up now because you are planning a Top Stars of the 90s page 😉
In some ways, many of the comments on William Hurt on his recent page can apply to Spacey though 10 years later. Spacey was very successful and critically acclaimed in the 1990s, particularly during the end of the decade, but after the first few years in the 2000s, his film career seemed to dip, though he was active in the theater and of course later earned more success TV with the House of Cards. Unlike Hurt, Spacey is often in rather unsympathetic roles, which probably has not helped his popularity. Still, I have seen 14 of his films and he always gives a great performance.

    1. Hey Phil….you are correct….a 90s decade page is one of the reasons I got a Spacey and McGregor page out so quickly. The 1990s are proving somewhat difficult….since I keep finding people that should be on the list…that do not have UMR pages.

As for Spacey…I think you are right….the same thoughts on Hurt work with Spacey…though I would say Spacey has maintained a higher profile than Hurt has…..but they are both quality actors.

14 is good…..but way behind me (I do not get to pound my chest too often when it comes to these tally counts) as I have seen 34 of these movies….including his worst rated UMR movie Nine Lives…which I saw in theaters..I blame having two little girls that love cats for that.

      Thanks for the feedback.

  4. An excellent actor, but I didn’t like him as Lex Luthor in Superman Returns, the tone was all wrong, ditto the film as well. Too dark, nasty and not enough humour and this was before Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy adversely influenced the DC movieverse.

I’ve seen 20 of the 42 films listed – favorites include – The Usual Suspects, Outbreak, Seven, Glengarry Glen Ross, A Bug’s Life, LA Confidential and American Beauty.

I’ll recommend Elvis & Nixon to anyone wondering if it’s worth a look, it is. Michael Shannon doesn’t look anything like Elvis but he has nailed the mannerisms down pat. Kevin Spacey is superb as Nixon, again doesn’t look like him but it doesn’t matter, he brings ‘Tricky Dicky’ to life and makes him oddly sympathetic.

Good to see LA Confidential and American Beauty topping the charts here.

A great addition to your movie encyclopedia Bruce, or should that be ‘moviestatsopedia’? 🙂

    Vote Up!

    1. Hey Mr. Steveman
      1. Thanks for the comment.
      2. I am not a big fan of Superman Returns either….it was a one and done movie for me….and I have no plans to re-watch it anytime soon.
      3. Tally counts…me 34, you 20 and Phil 14….so your combined total ties me.
      4. I have seen all of your favorite Spacey movies….with Usual Supects, Seven, LA Confidential joining Swimming With Sharks and The Ref making up my Top 5. With an * by Moon….which I love as well…Spacey does the voice in that one.
      5. I liked Elvis & Nixon…but not as much as you and Bob did.
      6. I like ‘moviestatsopedia’
      Good stuff.

  5. 1 Truly an occurrence “Worthy to be marked with a great white stone,” because Superman Returns has at last been officially listed on this site; and bubbling under the surface of this profile of Spacey there is a Dan-like join up. Bruce lists above a number of actors whom Kevin especially admires and like many of the actors of the Modern Era Kevin is on record as liking as well the work of Marlon Brando who played Jor-El in the 1978 Superman the Movie

“BY STEVE HEAD ‘I remember all of us were very excited about Marlon Brando being in Superman,’ says Kevin Spacey recalling the time he and his friends went to see the first Superman movie in 1978. “Everyone was excited about Brando being in that movie. We saw it on opening weekend and we just loved it’. “

2 In one scene in Superman Returns Kevin as Lex Luthor gets to act alongside archives footage of MB as Jor El carried over from shooting of the 1978 film but not included in that film. According to Russell Crowe HE Russell was in turn Brando’s favourite actor and of course the Dan like links are further strengthened by the fact that Crowe and Spacey appeared together in LA Confidential. “What goes around comes around,” is an old saying!

3 Spacey has given many terrific performances the most famous of which are probably in LA Confidential, American Beauty and The Usual Suspects. The author of LA Confidential James McEllroy praised Kevin’s performance in the film saying that it was the best portrayal of self-loathing that McEllroy had ever seen in the cinema. In the Usual Suspects Kevin left audiences debating if his character really was the shadowy crime lord Keyser Soze, the mystery of whose identity was the focal point throughout the film. Kevin who has to date appeared in 14 stage productions from 1981 – 2011 was as well successful on TV and I have the box sets of the earlier series of House of Cards, which has run on TV for 5 seasons since 2013, which starred Kevin as a ruthless politician and which was a reworking of the popular British television 1990 mini series starring Scottish actor Ian Richardson as the scheming politician. In addition Kevin is the executive producer of the US House of Cards. All in all therefore Spacey richly deserves this new Cogerson page.

    1. Hey Bob
      1. Sorry it took so long to respond to your Spacey comment…been a bit under the weather lately which has created some not so nice neck issues that make it hard to sit at a computer…the joys of getting older….but Bette Davis did say getting older was not for wimps.
      2. Good comment on Spacey and the influence by Brando.
      3. Too bad that Brando/Spacey scene did not make the final cut….if only it had then I could have included that movie on the Brando page….lol.
      4. Yep his television career has been pretty impressive…..but I have completely ignored that career here…just movies baby…just movies here….lol. Though I am pretty sure I will check out House of Cards one day.
      Good feedback as usual.
