Happy birthday Mr. Douglas!
Hey Flora. Thanks for checking out our Kirk Douglas page on his latest birthday.
Happy 103rd birthday to Kirk Douglas.
Years ago (we are talking Hub Page days) we wrote and released a Kirk and Michael Douglas page on the same day. When we switched from Hub Pages to Cogerson Movie Score we flipped their pages on the same day. When we switched from Cogerson Movie Score to UMR…we flipped their pages on the same day. The reasoning for doing the changes on the same day…was to do a comparison. Well here are the current results. Kirk’s pages have been viewed 44,731 times and Michael’s pages have been viewed 26,661 times. So the dad is almost getting twice as many views as the son…..when I first wrote those pages…I was still thinking current stars were the ones to bring in views. I was wrong…again.
HI BRUCE
Very interesting run-down on the Kirk/Michael association with the Cogerson site. You sure pay great attention to the history of your site.
Amazing to think that in my mind and probably in those of may people Burt and Kirk are often unseparable on screen and yet Kirk has now been 25 years without Burt.
Ironically and sadly Burt used to visit his friend Dana Andrews in hospital where Dana was confined with Alzheimer’s disease and on one such visit Lancaster collapsed in from of Andrews with the severe stroke that led to him being permanently housebound and eventually finished him off in 1994 just a fortnight short of his 81st birthday.
Kirk complained bitterly on TV in an interview that I saw that Burt’s final wife [|Susan Martin since 1990] kept Lancaster to herself and wouldn’t let Douglas in to see Burt in the final years of the latter’s confinement.
Another great irony is that as I have mentioned before in 1959’s Last Train from Gun Hill the sheriff keeps urging Douglas to not try to right wrongs as they will not matter in the end and therefore Kirk should “take the long view” in the matter and keep his head down. Kirk has certainly had “the long view”
It adds to that irony when one considers that actor Walter Sande who played the sheriff died nearly half a century ago in 1971 aged 65.
WH On re-reading your Burt’s Possibly Interesting Facts can I see now how I misinterpreted you regarding the Lancaster/Douglas partnership. Apologies of course, but (1) I couldn’t resist challenging Steve’s maths – pity it all backfired! (2) Kirk, himself born of Jewish emigrants, was always heavily into support for the Jewish cause.
For example his own production company Bryna made Cast a Giant Shadow in 1966 about the establishment of the State of Israel. Also Kirk touchingly played in 1982’s Remembrance of Love Joe Rabin a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust who travels to Israel for a reunion of Holocaust survivors. It therefore would not have surprised me if Kirk had made two versions of the Entebbe movie.
But STEVE! – none of what I have just said alters the fact that when alphabetical ensemble billing was not involved Burt always out-billed Kirk. Indeed I had meant to say in response to your playful jibe about my theory regarding the Lancaster/Douglas seating arrangement in the Oscars clip that psychologists have long maintained that people’s “automatic pilot” of the mind can at times make them unthinkingly replicate in one situation behaviour or stances that they are used to adopting in some fashion on other occasions where there might be certain connections.
For example a friend of mine joined a trade union at his work place. and attended a lot of the union meetings. For a time he was conscious of something peculiar occurring that he couldn’t put his finger on. Finally he worked out what it was. Trade Unions like probably most organisations have splits to one degree or another between guys conventionally perceived as politically “left wing” and “right wing” and it ultimately struck my friend that at meetings all the “lefties” sat together on the LEFT side of the room whilst the “right wing” guys sat in a bunch to the RIGHT of the room.
Hey Bob…..interesting comments. I especially liked the part about the Trade Unions and the sit selections…very funny. I think Burt and Kirk were both legends….but I think Burt’s star shined slightly brighter…which gave him the top billing when they worked together. Good stuff…sorry it took so long to respond to it.
BRUCE
Sincere thanks for your albeit belated response to my February post. That one had a beard on it and it was only when I went to give the beard a trim that I realized you had replied!!!
Hello,
I did not recognize him on tv when i was in LA and his son was speaking about him on a morning show, i prefer to remember him in his films, that the magic way of movie;
My favorites are a letter to three wifes, the viking ,the bad and beautiful and the big sky
I remember some photos with Bardot at Cannes , at the beginning of the 50. Very cool
Hé was a great friend of Burt Lancaster and made films with the most beautiful stars of 40 AND 50 , Darnell, Turner, etc
Happy Birthday Mister Kirk Douglas
Cheers
Pierre
Hey Pierre…..I understand your point……having seen the young Kirk…at times it is difficult to see the current Kirk….but the man is 103….and still pretty active.Of your favorites….I have seen and liked them all ..with the exception of The Big Sky…which I have not seen. I agree…..he had a great 1950s and 1960s. Good stuff.
Hello Bruce,
To day I was surprised to read your answer for a comment on Kirk Douglas which was in 2018, and here we are again for a 103 anniversary in 2019, life is always a surprise…..the différence is I am in France now.
I was in L A in 2018 just at the end of the bad moment with fire for California, and coming from France where we have some beginning trouble with the Gilets jaune and now we are in trouble again in 2019 with the rain and the problèmes with retraite.
I am not sure that a lot of young people remenbered him but he was, no questions about that one of the biggest male stars of the 40 th and the 50.
In fact my last comment is on the page of Ben Gazzara.
Have a very nice day
Pierre
The last of greats still standing (at least of the males)! Spartacus may be the role he will eternally be famous for, but let’s not forget other great ones: The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, Champion, Ace in the Hole, Detective Story, The Bad and the Beautiful, Lust for Life, Gunfight at OK Corral, Paths of Glory, Lonely are the Brave, and Seven Days in May. Happy 102nd birthday!
Hey PhilHoF17….thanks for last years Kirk birthday wishes….and now another year later….it is time to wish him a 103rd birthday. I love the fact that he and Olivia de Havilland are still around. As he is actually younger than her (by a few months). So many great movies for Kirk. Lonely Are The Brave (one of your favorites) is an underrated movie. Good stuff.
