  1. Another interesting British actor that brings you closer to finishing off Joel’s list! A suave and handsome leading man, Laurence Harvey had a successful run in Hollywood after his international success with Room at the Top. But this success was relatively short-lived as by the end of the 1960s, his career was waning, and (like Jeffrey Hunter who I commented on yesterday) he died too early (of stomach cancer at 45) to make any kind of comeback. I thought Harvey was particularly effective and memorable in The Manchurian Candidate, a classic and my favourite film on the list. He also made a great trio with Wayne and Widmark in The Alamo. Apart from these, I saw The Long and The Short and The Tall, The Running Man, and Life at the Top (a sequel to Room at the Top) which were all pretty good, so 5 in total. I’m sure Bob Roy will also remember Harvey as the neurotic chess player in a Columbo episode, where he already looked a bit sickly.

    1. Hey PhilHoF17….thanks for sharing your thoughts on Laurence Harvey. As almost always, we are thinking the same things about an actor. I would say between 1959 and 1965 he was one of the most successful actors working. After getting Christie her Oscar his career went into a downfall.

Beating Bob to the Columbo punch. He will be disappointed….lol. I think Life At The Top might be the quitest sequel ever. Good stuff as always.

    2. HI PHIL

Right you are. All great minds think alike. Please see (1) of my 4.43am post today. I had that written before I caught the exchanges between you and The Work Horse.

The satisfaction of a cat-and-mouse psychilogical thriller like the ones in the Columbo series is probably lost on Bruce and Steve Lensman who dine out on slasher and over-the-top action/super-hero movies . I know guys like Steve and Bruce: I’ve been observing them for years.

      1. Hey Bob. Glad you saw that Phil beat you to the punch when it comes to the Colombo trivia. Maybe I should start watching that show. Good stuff.

  4. “Although Elizabeth Taylor respected Laurence Harvey’s abilities, Jane Fonda claimed that “acting with Harvey is like acting by yourself–only worse.” While it is true that his acting was sometimes still and cold, Harvey had the charisma to be a leading man and the ability to extract subtleties from a part” – Rating The Movie Stars (1983)

    1. Speaking of Joel’s book. As I have said…one of our goals is to do a page on every subject in his book. There are 410 subjects in his book. One of the things I have done over the years is see how many actors I had done in the book in alphabetical order. Originally the most I done was 3 or 4 actors….however…with Laurence Harvey now having a page….that now connects 60 actors done in ABC order…or covering about 54 pages of the book…that is now completely done. That 60 will only continue to grow…as now Eva Gabor and Louis Jourdan are now high on my list of people to do…when those two are done….I will have 84 actors in a row done.

So in a nutshell…..I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of this project.
