Cogerson Review of Roger Moore’s DVD Commentary

Growing up Roger Moore was my James Bond. My dad’s James Bond was Sean Connery. My oldest son’s James Bond was Pierce Brosnan. My youngest daughters’ James Bond is Daniel Craig. So needless to say, I was pretty upset when Sir Roger passed away about a year ago. Well the other day I was thinking about Live and Let Die, and I thought…..this would be the perfect time to listen to the Moore DVD commentary …which I had never listened to before. As for the movie….it is my second favorite Moore Bond movie…only trailing The Spy Who Loved Me.

Best things I learned from the commentary. (1) Moore loved adding the humor into the Bond movies….as it made it different from the Connery movies. (2) Moore loved working with all of his co-stars with the exception of alligators in the famous “jumping on the backs of gators to escape” scene. (3) Yaphet Kotto and director Guy Hamilton had many disagreements on the set. (4) They had limited amount of time to film in Harlem…before they were advised to leave the area for their own protection.

(5) The agent that killed at the beginning of the movie was played by Robert Dix….he was the son of silent film star Richard Dix. (6) Moore considered this to be his second best Bond picture after The Spy Who Loved Me. (7) Moore told a funny story of an unnamed co-star who accidently fired a pistol near his head and burned his hair……then when the star gave the makeup lady a hard time. Moore asked….”Why are you so harsh to the crew?” The unknown star said “I did not come to Hollywood to make friends with people…I came to be the greatest actor ever.” Moore then said…”Well since you failed so miserably at the acting part….why not be nicer to the crew?” Even though Moore is gone….I really enjoyed spending two more bonus hours with him.
