Bessie Love who she appeared with made her first film in 1915. She starred in the best picture of 1929 The Broadway Melody.

I’ve recounted the first nude scene I saw was in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie which was also the first Maggie Smith film I saw.

    1. Hey Dan
      1. Moved most of this comment from the Forum page to this page.
      2. Surprised she fell out of the Top 1000…..but I guess she has slowed down somewhat in the last decade.
      3. All the lists are massive…and fun to check out.
      4. The Harry Potter movies really help her cause….so many Potter co-stars on the lists.
      5. I like the Bessie Love information….but where is Bess Flowers?…I looked twice and I do not see her…..that can’t be right…can it?….lol.
      6. Amazing the first nude scene sticks in our brains…for me it was Clint Eastwood’s The Gauntlet.
      7. 47 Oscar winning co-stars is pretty incredible….one of the best totals for an actress.
As always…I appreciate you taking the time to put all of this info together.

  2. saw 19, including top 14. hook is a ten and a favourite (her largest ADBO, non harry potter category). five low box office/ high review/Oscar nominated films: a room with a view, gosford park , Richard III, Othello, prime of ms jean brodie, all 8s and 9s, none favorites(none even liked by me), I love to laugh and my british sense of humor is retarded (under developed).

    1. Hey bob cox
      1. Tally count…me 26, you 19, Steve 17 and Flora 15….solid totals for everybody.
      2. Interesting that you have Hook as a 10……that has always seemed to be too “hit and miss”….parts look amazing….Hoffman is excellent as Hook…..but never bought Robin Williams as Peter Pan.
      3. I have seen all of your top rated movie with the exception of Othello….not a huge fan of Shakepeare,…..but I might check that one out in the near future.
      Good comment.

  3. I have seen 15 Dame Maggie Smith movies. NONE of them are Harry Potter movies. I have not read the books either.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Murder By Death at number 7.

Obviously the highest rated film I have NOT seen is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The LOWEST rated film I have seen is Travels With My Aunt which I thought would be higher considering her Oscar nomination.

I am also surprised that The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is not higher than 15.

I have a lot of favourites which are mysteries/suspense, though not all of them are that genre.

I read Bob’s comment about Peter Ustinov not being a co-star link for Death on the Nile and Evil Under the Sun. Perhaps a Peter Ustinov UMR page is in order?

    Favourite Maggie Smith Movies:

    Death on the Nile
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
    Murder By Death
    Gosford Park
    Evil Under the Sun
    A Room With a View
    Travels With My Aunt
    The V.I.P.’s

    1. Hey Flora…..tally count….me 26, Steve 17 and you 15……if you take out the Harry movies the tally would e 19, 10 and 15. I have seen all of your favorites with the exception of Travels With My Aunt. I agree…Peter Ustinov and his two Oscar wins deserves an UMR page…..so many subjects and so little time….lol. Travels With My Aunt got Maggie an acting Oscar nomination….but the reviews were pretty weak….not to mention pretty weak box office….those two things helped lower it’s ratings. I have not seen Death on the Nile in a very long time….it might be time to revisit that movie. Good feedback as always.

  4. “Wake up Maggie I think I got something to say to you
It’s early September and I really should be back at school
I know I keep you amused but I feel I’m being used”

Sorry I was having a Bob Roy moment..

I’ve seen 17 of the 52 films on the chart, more than I thought, yes I confess the Harry Potter films did help my tally.

I see you’ve find a photo of Maggie with Mikey, nice.

Maggie played the vengeful goddess Thetis in Clash of the Titans, a film I watched on video zillions of times back in the 80s.

Nowadays she’s familiar to millions of young moviegoers as the deputy headmistress of Hogwarts, Minerva McGonagall. I didn’t know she missed one in the series.

Talking of schools I haven’t seen her Oscar-winning role as a young teacher in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. But I did see Gnomeo and Juliet! [Bob groans]

Nice work as always Bruce. Vote Up!

Have you done a page on Bond girl Dame Judi? Dame Joan? Dame Helen?

    1. HEY ROD

Stop trying to curry favour with the moderator of this site by putting a lot of stuff in about schools – but remember I got there first!

    2. Hey Steve….I have seen 26 of these movies….or about half of them. 7 of them are from the Harry franchise…and 3 of them are from Caine movies. The opening lines are from one of the few Rod Stewart songs I like. I have not seen Clash of the Titans in years (at least her version). You are correct about why young moviegoers know her….Minerva McGonagall is a huge hero in the Cogerson household. She was not in Deathly Hallows Part 1…..so she only has 7 Harry movies on her resume. Dame Judi Dench does not have an UMR page yet….but I think she will in the near future. Sounds like you are throwing a “mention” to Maggie’s Breakfast with the Dames….which looks interesting. Thanks for the comment, visit, tally and vote up.

  5. HI O ALL INCLUSIVE ONE! I am pleased that you have given us a page on Maggie Smith that great English thespian, in fact Britain’s Bette Davis in my view, now a marvellous 83 years old and still going strong. Of course being a magnificent actress and English she is Dame Maggie Smith.

I’ve told you how the Brits love to shower with posh honors on successful people, though I had my own little bit of comfort when His Holiness the Pope of Rome made my singing idol COUNT John McCormack in recognition of his singing achievements. There is no Count Gene Kelly!

My fave roles of Maggie were those in Quartet, Gosford Park, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and the two Hercule Poirot films Death on the Nile and Evil under the Sun.
In Death on the Nile she got to star alongside Bette Davis. I see that in your co-star link columns you don’t mention the star of the two Poirot movies, Peter Ustinov who played the great detective himself. What have you got against him – Joel not like HIM either?

Actually if you haven’t seen it Prime of Miss Jean is right up your street as she plays a schoolteacher who boasts to her all-girl class, to whom she is trying to teach “the facts of life” to the annoyance of the education establishment in the 1930s , “I am in my prime!” Hope you are not carrying on like that in your classrooms Teach! That performance was a tour de force by the young Maggie.

Dame Margaret was also magnificent as the regal “battle axe” – how the Brits love battle axes! – in the hit TV series Downton Abbey in which US legend Shirley MacLaine guest starred for a time. Despite her advanced years Maggie is to appear in a big screen adaptation of Downton Abbey – go for it Dame Margaret!

I know that your site doesn’t usually dwell too much on TV productions but there is something for you too in the series as Elizabeth McGovern has another one of the key roles in it. Liz McG you may remember was Sir Maurice’s girlfriend in the 1990 Shock to the System and had the power to “out” him as a killer. Dan would no doubt be able to point out to you the linkage there in Shirley MacLaine also being a Micklewhite co-star in Gambit, Bewitched and Woman Times 7.

Anyhow to greet this Cogerson new page which you richly deserve, Dame Maggie, I will pinch another “Vote Up!” from that fellow countryman of yours who frequents this site and who might well be your own poster boy if you knew him! They don’t come any greater than you Margaret in my book

    1. Hey Bob…..thanks for checking out our Maggie UMR page. Currently we do not have a Peter Ustinov page….so he does not get an UMR co-star mention. Nothing against Mr. Ustinov….and one day I will have a page on him. Joel did not include him in his book…so I do not know if Joel liked him or not. Last year when I did my massive “Teaching Movies” survey….Prime of Miss Jean got a couple of mentions…but it is not a movie many people remember. I saw it….only because it was a Best Actress Oscar movie. Downton Abby is very popular in my house STILL….even SoC3 has been sucked into watching it….so far I have been able to avoid that trap….lol. Maggie has many connections with the Sleuth co-stars. When Maggie won her Oscar for California Suite…so thanks Caine in her speech. Thanks for the vote up and the feedback. I fixed your Davis error.
