March 11th – Year 4 – 2017 UMR Movie Brackets with Seedings

The rules to qualify for the tournament: Actor/actress had to star in at least 25 movie….and had to  be ranked in the Top 64 when looking at the average Ultimate Movie Ranking (UMR) Score.  The men’s Top Seeds are Spencer Tracy, James Stewart, Tom Hanks and Gary Cooper.  The women’s Top Seeds are Katharine Hepburn, Judy Garland, Bette Davis and Elizabeth Taylor.

The rules to advance to the next round:  The first four rounds are a best-of-three movie matchup.  The last two rounds (Final Four & Finals) are a best-of-seven. Using a random number generator each actor/actress’ movie is drawn from their Top 25 UMR rated movies.  The movie with the higher UMR score wins that matchup.  First one to either 2 or 4 wins moves to the next round. Movie can only be used once for the entire tournament….which is why 25 movies is the minimum to qualify for the tournament.  This continues until only one actor/actress is left.  For the first time…we have enough actresses to have their own tournament.

  1. And we down to 32….round one is over….some of the casualities? Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, James Cagney, William Powell, Michael Caine and Marlon Brando…..results posted later today.

I for one am having fun with this.

    1. Van Johnson a 7 seed? Seems strange when compared to some of the stars with a worse seeding. Go Duke! That could be for the Blue Devils and Wayne.

      1. On the actress side Lucille Ball ahead of Greta Garbo? That makes no sense at all. So when does this tournament start?

        1. Hey SteinHOF…. it is a combination of Lucy’s movie career being underrated and Garbo’s movie career lacking great statistical moves.

As for the start date…normally I go at the same page as the NCAA tourney ….so come next Sunday night they will have 16 teams left and we will have 16 actors and actresses.

So Thursday I will drag out the random number generator and get rolling.

      2. Hey SteinHOF……in hindsight maybe we should have excluded Van as almost his entire career was filled with supporting roles. I threw out people like Lionel Barrymore, Donald Crisp, Walter Brennan and Peter Lorre for just that reason. All of those actors had outstanding averages when looking at their Top 25 UMR movies.

I will remember your comment if the Duke Blue Devils or Duke Wayne win either of these tournaments. Thanks for the visit.

    2. Hey SteinHOF…it means nothing but I have fun with it….as I look forward to “playing” this tournament,
