Obviously Marlee was never on the Oracle of Bacon list.
With the Marlee Matlin page doing done….that only leaves 4 Best Actress to do UMR pages on…Simone Signoret, Louise Fletcher, Shirley Booth and Anna Magnani. I have Booth’s five movies researched, Signoret and Magnani will be challenging since they made so many movies overseas. Fletcher will be done in the near future.
HI BRUCE:
I for one would certainly be interested in Signoret/Magnani new pages. Simone and her actor husband Yves Montand were regarded as radical “Lefties” for their day and if the Senator from Wisconsin were still holding sway you’d find yourself before his Committee for writing such a page – watch out for the “leftie” book-burning bonfire scene in Guilty by Suspicion if you get around to seeing it.
Simone worshipped the ground on which Yves walked– a bit like the Gimme Mores in reverse! She always referred to Yves lovingly as just “Montand” His big claim to fame in the US was of course as Monroe’s co-star in 1960’s Let’s Make Love – he took over from my Greg who walked out on the picture because Marilyn was pressurising the script writers into building up her part at Greg’s expense.
Outside the States Yves is probably best known for his lead role in Cluzot’s 1953 classic The Wages of Fear regarded back then as very “left” because it criticised some of the industrial practices of capitalist countries.
“Not even in my native Italy will he let me have top billing!” wailed Magnani as she lay on the floor of the set of 1960’s The Fugitive Kind kicking and screaming to the amazement of cast and crew including her Mumbling co-star who was insisting on top billing EVERYWHERE.
In fact The Great Mumbler might not have had a complete say in the matter because film historians claim that Fugitive Kind was the first movie ever in which a star got one million dollars for his services. If that was so Hollywood was not going to pay out all that money and allow Mr Mumbles to “hide his light under a bushel” [I’m sure that Hirsch if he had had a financial stake in the movie would have agreed that they must insist upon value for money from Mr M.]
Anyway Anna could count herself lucky that Old Cantankerous wasn’t the male lead or she may not have gotten even equal billing. She was however for a very short time [though no “sex kitten”] one of the biggest stars from outside the States ever to make it in the Hollywood of those days.
“If we do the movie together ME get billed above GABLE? – never!” – Eldred Gregory Peck.
Marlee has made 22 feature films and has been in 46 television productions from 1988 until 2019. Her appearances last year were in 3 episodes of 2019’s Limetown the 10 episode season of which ran in Oct/November. Unfortunately Facebook Watch has cancelled the show so there will be no 2nd season.
Marlee’s deafness has limited her roles to largely women with her own affliction [one notable exception being TV’s Against Her Will: the Carrie Buck Story in 1994 for which Marlee in the title role was nominated for a Cable ACE award] so her appearance in so many movies and TV productions is some achievement and very courageous. Sadly President Trump is said to have referred to her as “retarded”. For me that makes it all the more welcome that this site has now recognised the achievements of Marlee with her own page.
Happily there are 4 movies in the pipeline for Marlee -2 at post-production stage [Coda and Run] and 2 which have recently been announced – Silent Knights and Silent Voice. Given the struggles that Marlee must have had to advance her career in the face of her affliction it is gratifying to learn that she has been able to accumulate a net worth of $11 million; and I wish her every continued success. “Voted Up!”
Hey Bob. Most of her feature films did not see theaters…so they were sadly not included in the table. She has been much busier on television. I agree she is limited in her roles, but I am glad to see her IMDb page is approaching triple figures. She certainly started off with a bang….an Oscar for her first role. I had not heard that about Marlee and Trump. Thanks for the update on her upcoming movies….as always…..good stuff!
HI BRUCE: Thanks for the feedback.
If – and I say IF as I have not heard any statement that he made – President Trump disagreed with Marlee about the issue concerned he could have used political argument in an adult way to defend his stance. In my opinion there is no excuse for descending to personal abuse notwithstanding the fact that he often gets a lot of it himself.
It’s something that one might expect from Russell Crowe if somebody annoyed him: certainly it deosn’t become The Leader of the Free World and might give the impression elsewhere that Americans generally were an insensitive people; which I know is not the case from my trip to the US and from a lot of what I have read on this site. Bottom line though: such mode of argument is not ‘statesman’ like.
I’m quite certain that if a politician from the mainstream over here made such a statement he/shewould be forced to apologise for it.
Why was Marlee in the news Bruce? Enquiring minds….
I’ve seen 2 of the films on the chart – Children of a Lesser God and The Player.
Ages since I last watched The Player, I think I have a copy in the collection, should give it another spin. Lot’s of big star cameos.
Vote Up!
Hey Steve.
1. Thanks for the visit on one of the last Best Actress Winners to get an UMR page.
2. Tally count….I am at 3. I have seen the two you have seen and Some Kind of Beautiful. But I do not remember her part at all. I looked at the trailer, and Marlee is not mentioned at all.
3. As for why she is in the news….she was bashing Trump for not using the sign language people….apparently, in the last few months Trump got rid of them….and now with information becoming so vital, she is upset. Hopefully the Donald will bring back his sign language team.
Good stuff as always.
Happy wife. Happy life. The wife said, do a page on Marlee Matlin she is in the news…..so we now have a Marlee Matlin page.
