   When Harold Wilson completed his first year as Britain’s Prime Minister he was interviewed about his achievements during that year. He listed those polices which he considered a success and at the end of the interview he was asked to name the mistakes he had made and he said to the interviewer “Hey you find that out for yourself –I’m not going to blow the whistle on myself!”

   When I spotted the additional credit on the Mumbles page I was running scared in case it had been put there in error , so I didn’t want to draw attention to it. I noticed as well The Great Mumbler is credited TWICE with One Eyed Jacks, but again who’s complaining?!

   In one scene in Superman Returns Kevin Spacey’s Lex Luthor locates The Man of Steel’s Fortress of Solitude and stares at a recorded talking image of Mr Mumbles as Jor El from the 1978 movie and an excited Spacey exclaims “Marvellous!”

   So tell W o C that I am pleased that there is at least one person in the Cogerson household who like Spacey appreciates the entirety of the contribution that Mr M has made to the movies industry.

   I notice you intend a nice special tribute on Father’s Day. Whe Mother’s Day come around next time I’ll lead the tributes to W o C !!

   According to that Darwin Porter book, Mr Mumbles also had friendships with some of the most famous women in entertainment, and even wider, history such as Bardot, Monroe and Shelley Winters among the actresses, singer Edith Piaf, socialite Doris Duke [said to be the richest woman in the world in Brando’s time] Jackie Kennedy and author Jackie Collins, sister of Joan, with Puerto Rican beauty Rita Moreno of West Side Story fame representing Mr M’s well-known admiration of dark-skinned beauties.

   Porter claims too that Mr M had a week-long association with notorious Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss before she was jailed for tax evasion in 1997 and she later said about the obese 73 year-old Great Orator “He was the sexiest fat man I ever knew!” [A Sydney Greenstreet with sex appeal.] Rita Moreno once said too that “My husband is the love of my life but Marlon Brando has always been the lust of my life!”

   Charles William Stuart aka Glenn Ford in his last life made a 1961 movie called Love is a Ball aka All this and Money Too. Perhaps therein lies the secret of much of the acrimony toward Mr M – jealousy! Would arguably the most publicised and lionised First Lady in US history or creative geniuses like Archie Leach and Lord Olivier have yearned for the company of Joel for example?

   He lives in a fancy apartment
   On the Boulevard of St. Michel
   Where he keeps his Rolling Stones records
   And he’s a friend of Sacha Distel

   His name is heard in high places
   He knows the Aga Khan
   Who sent him a racehorse for Chistmas
   And he keeps it just for fun, that’s his plan

4. Hello Bob, haven’t you patched things up with the chief yet? Come on and shake hands you two, let bygones be bygones, water under the bridge etc

   Bob you have over 2000 informative comments invested in this site. Granted a casual reader may need a glossary handy for some of the nicknames and injokes you use in your posts such as “Sir Maurice”, “Mumbles”, “Charley Bill”, “Archie Leach”, “Laddie”, “thin woman”, “Moses”, “Rameses”, “Dathan” but they are always fun and interesting to read. (even I didn’t know who Charley Bill was, and I’m still not sure) 😉

   Gielgud and Brando eh… an odd combination. I’d have thought Sir John would have winced at the idea of the great mumbler reciting Shakespeare on film but it’s great to know they hit it off and became pals. Thanks for posting!

   “The list of Marlon Brando’s close male friends ranged from some of the most famous actors of his own generation like Montgomery Clift, Tab Hunter and Rock Hudson, to stars from other generations, the most celebrated among them probably being Cary Grant and Lord Laurence Olivier. In Darwin Porter’s 2005 book the author writes of Brando’s close links with Grant, Monty Clift and James Dean among many others

   ‘Brando’s connection with Montgomery Clift was a long and enduring relationship,’ Porter writes, adding: ‘However Marlon had just a short friendship with Cary Grant, culminating in weekending with the English/American movie legend in San Francisco.’

   In his book Porter claims that Brando also had a friendship with another English acting legend, Sir John Gielgud, with Marlon telling other friends that he felt he owed Gielgud something for teaching him how to speak Shakespeare eloquently when they made Julius Caesar together in 1953.
