sheen-1st-photoWant to know the best Martin Sheen movies?  How about the worst Martin Sheen movies?  Curious about Martin Sheen’s box office grosses or which Martin Sheen movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Martin Sheen movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which got the worst? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

A few years ago Sunshine625 requested a movie page that ranked all of the Sheen family’s movies.  So I put them all on one huge movie page.  It turned out well but it was probably a little too long….and the Google search gods never liked the page….so the views were pretty bad.  Well now that we are moving to a new website….I figured I give each Sheen/Estevez their very own page.  Their new individual links….Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen and Martin Sheen.

Martin Sheen (1940-) was born Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez in 1940.  His acting career is now almost 60 years long.  His IMDb page shows over 250 acting credits since 1956. This page will rank  Martin Sheen movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, cameos and movies that were not released in theaters were not included in the rankings.

  • Sort Martin Sheen movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
  • Sort Martin Sheen movies by domestic yearly box office rank

    1. Hey Flora…good shout out for Mr. Sheen….happy birthday to him….I have added a few of his movies in the last few weeks…Bordertown and The Boxcar Children….plus added in his chronological order table as well.

  1. Steve’s latest video has been added to this page.

“Ah….one for Flora. #27 Loophole is one I really enjoy. #21 O….Othello on a basketball court…I like it. Seen 5 of the first 10. #18 Cadence…fun seeing Charlie and Martin going at each other. #15 The Final Countdown…love the movie and the idea of the movie…seen 7 of the next 10…so 12 of 20 so far. Top 10…. #9 The American President…WoC’s favorite movie. #6 The Dead Zone….love this movie….his final moments of that movie are so memorable. #1 Brando Now….love the first half…second half not so much…but Sheen is awesome in the movie….seen 9 of the Top 10…only The Incident has escaped me. So that is a grand total of seeing 21 of the 30 movies…not too bad. Voted up and shared at UMR.”

    1. Hi Bruce, thanks for checking out my Martin Sheen video, appreciate the vote and share. 21 out of 30 beats my 16 and Flora’s 15. Flora requested a video for Sheen, she’s a big fan, she has an autographed picture of Martin Sheen as President Bartlett above her fireplace.

Lots of favorites here including Final Countdown, Spider-Man, Wall Street, The Dead Zone, The Departed and Apocalypse Now.

I should mention that Cadence was directed by Martin Sheen.

  2. In an interview in Rolling Stone magazine in the early eighties Martin Sheen told them that he liked the leading “Young Turks” of the 1950s, Dean, Brando and Elvis, but as I’ve mentioned before on this site Marty then added “But towering above the all is GEORGE.” [C SCOTT] so we can take it Scott was at least at that time his favourite actor though that could have changed as around 35 years have elapsed since that interview and of course new acting titans like Jason Statham have appeared on the scene since then!

Best POSTERS for me in your Sheen video are Spawn, Enigma, both for Loophole, the 1st one for Eagle’s Wing [stunning] “O”, the first one for Cadence, The Final Countdown, The Little Girl who Lives down the Lane, The Incident, both ones for Badlands, and an amazing highly original foreign language one for Apocalypse Now the movie that made Marty a star at least for a while

STILLS that I like the most are (1) the opening ensemble (2) lobby card for The Believers (3) in Firestarter (4) in Spiderman (5) Gettysburg (6) The Dead Zone (7) The Departed (8) Wall Street (9) with Gandhi (10) excellent 1st one from Apocalypse Now followed by (11) what seems to be a lobby card of Marty and Brando in Apocalypse Now.

As mentioned above Martin told Rolling Stone how of the 1950s actors he liked Marlon, Elvis and Dean but especially Dean and when he knew he would be working and share scenes with Brando he couldn’t believe his luck and exclaimed to himself “Crikey – this guy was DEAN’s idol!”

Marty supported Barack Obama’s campaign for the US presidency and Martin’s films often illustrate the Sheen political ideology, as can be seen for example in The American President, Wall Street and the TV series The West Wing. He has in real life linked up with strong Democrat my George Clooney for certain causes.

I think that my fave Sheen movie is The American President. I have said before that war movies are not my cup of tea so for once I have to “do a Joel” on a Brando movie and put Coppola’s war epic low on my own list. As Flora would express it, I admired it artistically but didn’t enjoy it.

I find Sheen in movies a very likeable and easy actor to watch and your video is easily worth a 98% rating for me. You and Bruce agree on 5 of Marty’s 6 best reviewed movies and you two nearly made it a full house because he ranks 7th The Dead Zone which is your No 6, him preferring instead to include Gettysburg in his main 6. Again though as it is a war film I’ll pass on the subject.

    1. Hey Bob….excellent breakdown of Steve’s latest video. Good to see that we agree on 5 of the Top 6. I am betting Flora is really appreciating this one.

      1. Yes, I am loving this video. II have admired Martin Sheen for a long time and know a lot about his background and family. Some of his films I have seen several times. I still plan to try and watch Catch-22 and Gandhi among others. I have watched Badlands the most often.

    2. Hi Bob, thanks for the review, generous rating, info, trivia and comparison, it is appreciated. Glad you enjoyed the picture gallery.

I thought Gettysburg was a made for TV movie, well it was originally, but seeing it on Bruce’s box office chart made me double check. It was briefly released in theaters, all 254mins of it, before debuting on TV a few months later and even managed to make some money on it’s big screen release, $23m adjusted on the chart.

Robert Duvall was the original choice for General Robert E. Lee in Gettysburg but couldn’t do it for various reasons and Sheen stepped in. Duvall played Lee 10 years later in the prequel – Gods and Generals. Sheen was asked to reprise the role but he was busy on The West Wing.

Martin Sheen’s father is Spanish and his mother is…. Irish [cue Bob grinning] “I love being Spanish as much as I love being Irish, and I really love being Irish.”

Two Martin Sheen films scored 10 out of 10 from my sources – Apocalypse Now and Gandhi. There are two scoring 9 – The Departed and Gettysburg. and nine scoring 8 out of 10.

IMDBs top rated Sheen films are The Departed and Apocalypse Now, while the latter is no.1 at Rotten Tomatoes.

Good to see Bruce and I have a similar top 5 and same no.1 – Apocalypse Now.

Sheen on James Dean – “James Dean had such a powerful effect on my generation. I’d love to have worked with him. I did a TV pilot with Sal Mineo once and I drove him crazy asking about Dean. He’d disappear when he saw me coming. On the last day, he came to my trailer. I said, “Sal, come on in!” He said, “No, no. I just wanted to say goodbye.” I said, “Well, it was a pleasure working with you.” As he walked away, he looked over his shoulder and said, “He would’ve liked you.”

Sheen on Brando – “First of all, the biggest problem working with Marlon was the image we brought to him. It was: “Oh my God, it’s Marlon!” So, the first thing he did when he arrived – because I guess he had a sense of that – was to go around and introduce himself to everybody: crew members, all the way down to the drivers and the wardrobe people. [In Brando accent] “Hi, I’m Marlon, what’s your name? What do you do?” It took a full day. But everyone was stunned by him. He was so disarming and he became after my heart. I adored him… his compassion. The only thing he wouldn’t talk about is acting [laughs]. He had no interest in it at all. He wanted to know about you and your family and where you come from and how you deal with all your life experiences.”

“He was so imaginative and so alive. But he was a big jokester. I mean, he loved practical jokes. He’d go out of his way to create a practical joke and stand by and laugh. He was like a child in a lot of ways… he was very child-like. It’s part of the reason he was such a brilliant actor. As I say, it’s the last thing he talked about: movies and acting. He didn’t have the slightest interest. I miss him. “

      1. BRUCE – Thanks for your feedback
HI STEVE Thanks to you too for the feedback on my Sheen post. From my own perspective you really excelled yourself this time with the quotes none of which I was hitherto familiar with- certainly some were very flattering to Mr Mumbles. The only other quote I’ve seen from Marty apart from those in that long-ago Rolling Stones interview is “If I am remembered for just two films let it be Badlands and Apocalypse Now.” I didn’t know he had Irish blood in him. I’m glad now that I have always taken to him!

This week the special True Christmas film channel opened on television and other channels will soon join it in showing movies about Christmas. That means that from now until the new year there will be wall to wall sentimental festive weepies for me to watch and I love those simple, harmless good-spirited movies.

I’m in good company there for usually Arnie’s 1996 “Jingle all the Way” gets a re-run and as it is next week” Santa with Muscles” [made the same year] is showing starring ex American mega wrestler Hulk Hogan [aka Terry Gene Bollea ] who regards himself as a protégé of Stallone. Maybe inside those musclebound action heroes and wrestlers there’s always been a big softie who believes in Santa trying to get out. Unfortunately Hulk’s Xmas offering Santa with Muscles gets just a 24% rating from IMDB – even The Work Horse probably wouldn’t have been THAT hard on him.

I can’t recall if you did a special Xmas movies compilation last year but certainly one would be nice this year as the Big Day draws near. The Work Horse has an excellent already-standing 17 entry Christmas movies page which he could well update this festive season. He seemed to be using the page to try to get Willis’ Die Hard equated with it’s a Wonderful Life as a Christmas classic! I was, when I watched action movies, particularly fond of John McClane but him up there with my Jimmy as a Christmas fave? – never!

  3. HELLO! IS THERE ANYONE THERE?
1 For most of us the mention of certain celebs or other VIPs will often remind us of significant events to us in our own lives and in 1980 the one screen giant Belfast cinema The Ritz where I had spent many happy boyhood hours was converted to a 4 screen complex in keeping with the times.

2 To mark the opening of the converted theatre Bo Derek/Dudley Moore’s 10 and Coppola’s Apocalypse Now were shown and of course the latter made Martin a star and indeed he said back in the 1980s “If I’m remembered for just two films I’ll be content if they are Badlands and Apocalypse Now.” The latter was the first time I’d seen Martin in movies.

3 He would be pleased to see the excellent ratings that this site has given those two films but he must today have some other happy memories of his movies since he made that statement because he has turned in many subsequent fine performances

4 In Apocalypse Now he got to share film-historic scenes with one of his own, mumbling idols and he said in an article in Rolling Stone in the 1980s that the latter actor along with Dean and Elvis were his own personal favourites and then added “But towering above them all is GEORGE [C Scott]”

5 As two of Marty’s idols George and Mr. Mumbles both turned down Oscars to display social conscience about one thing or another I wonder what Marty thought about Bad Boy Hirschhorn [the Russel Crowe of critics] turning up and meekly accepting an award in those times and groveling to the Academy for honouring him with a shared award.***

6 I have always liked Martin as an actor and a person and for me his most entertaining performance was as the benevolent wise-owl senior Presidential aide “A J” whose advice was so valued by Mike Douglas’ President Andrew Shepherd in the 1995 The American President and of course Martin himself plays the President in the hit TV series The West Wing. So happy birthday Mr. President!

**Moviegoers are always wary of shared awards for a joint achievement because they are never sure which of the duo/group really was the driving force
