As a kid I remember always hearing about which comic book company was the best.   Many of my friends were in the DC comic camp. Batman, Superman, Flash, Green Lantern and of course the classic Saturday morning cartoon, Justice League of America (1973-1986), were the strengths of their argument. My favorite superhero was Spider-Man, who was and still is one of Marvel comics most popular superheroes….so that put me in the less crowded camp of Marvel. As an adult the same argument seems to be still being asked…only now it is which comic company is bringing the best superhero movies to the big screen.

  1. Hey Coge…….I have not ever seen any of these movies, from start to finish….or paid attention, on purpose……BUT, I have 4 grandsons in particular, ages 10,9, 6 & 5 who have all seen every single one of these Super Hero movies, at least once, possibly, a few times each. And believe me, I can tell you all about them. They crack me up, because if I ask a question, they are SHOCKED that I would not know all about these Heroes!!!……..Gramma, you don’t KNOW who Spiderman’s girlfriend is?? I need to take notes!!

    1. Hey fpherj48 …I am amazed that you have not seen any of these movies….but I am glad your grandkids are trying to get you “in the know” when it comes to superhero movies. I greatly appreciate you stopping by and commenting especially with the subject matter holding no interest for you.

  2. Yay for The Avengers being number one! Why am I not surprised? I found this amazing page via the Sunshine Times which by the way is one heck of a newspaper! Have I mentioned that your tables look longer and leaner when viewed via the iPhone? Gotta love technology and this page! 🙂

    1. Hey Sunshine625…..yes the power of the Sunshine Times is indeed very strong. Glad that one of your favorites did so well in the rankings….I just bought The Avengers 3D and it is awesome. Glad my hubs look longer and leaner on your mobile phone….maybe one day I will figure all of this tech stuff out.

  3. Very cool and interesting page, as a kid I was a Marvel guy, but back in the 80s most people were Marvel collectors that I knew of. DC Comics was shunned big time, because I guess my generation could not relate to the extremely black and white characters that permeated DC’s line up at the time.

The only comic I liked and could relate to from DC were the Batman comics during the 80s. The X-Men and Spider-Man were my comics of choice.

As for movies, I also lean towards Marvel. DC has had two good movie properties…The Original Superman and the Batman properties by both Burton and Nolan. Other than that, DC has been disappointing and have no clue what to do with their other A-list characters.

I would love to see Justice League hit the theaters, as well as the Flash and I guess a reboot of The Green Lantern…DC has no clue on whether they will reboot the GL franchise or continue with a sequel.

Marvel has mapped out their game plan since The Hulk and Iron Man films (Marvel Studios that is)…DC still seem to be clutching at straws on what to do and how to make things work….minus the Batman franchise…Superman Returns, according to DC/Warner…was a huge disappointment for some reason.

If we are talking about DC Comics and Marvel Comics first big comic successes, it would only be fair to include Marvel Comics first publication name of Timely Comics since DC Comics was known as National Periodical Publications when Superman was introduced before it incorporated the name Detective Comics/DC.

In that case, Timely/Marvel Comic’s first successful comics was Captain America, Sub-Mariner, and The Human Torch (android version) during the Golden Age.

Anyways, great hub with loads of amazing facts…it really just depends on what you like…both DC and Marvel have put out stellar films in their journey…though, I have to admit that The Dark Knight is perhaps my all time favorite comic book movie to date.

    1. Hey rabbit75….I bow to your comic expertise…..I guess I should have mentioned Marvel first successes before Stan Lee created his superheroes of the 1960s. I agree with you about the state of DC movies….if Man of Steel is disappointing next summer…I wonder where they go to next as it seems to early to reboot Batman already.

I was never really sure why Superman Returns was so disappointing to the producers….not many movies cross the 200 million dollar mark..granted people did not seem to want to watch another chapter…..but I think Nolan will do that with the new franchise.

I am glad your favorite movie reached the top spot on my charts….I think by the end of the year The Dark Knight Rises will be right there as well.

  4. I love the Nolan Batman series and Dark Knight is one of my all time favorite superhero films. I often wonder if it would have done nearly as well in the box office if Heath Ledger had not passed away so soon before the films release. He was an amazing actor and I enjoyed so many of this past film. There are always those factors that go into box office results beyond how good a film is.

    1. Hey Domenick Dicce …thanks for the comment. I am sure that Heath Ledger’s death helped the box office….but I think that performance of his was the main draw….I think the success of The Dark Knight was like a perfect storm…..as all positive factors reached at the same time…Heath’s performance, Heath’s death, people discovering Batman Begins on DVD and coming up for the 2nd chapter and the fact that Christopher Nolan turned into the new Spielberg. I guess we will never know….but the 3rd chapter did pretty well with out Heath.

  5. Awesome post! I never thought to compare DC vs. Marvel in terms of movie income and awards. I personally like Marvel but Batman has always been a favorite from DC. Even being a fan though, Batman and Robin is easily one of the worst movies in general ever made.

Keep up the good and interesting articles!

    1. Hey BeyondGS ….I agree with you….I am a Marvel person myself….but Batman almost makes me a DC person….I have seen all 8 Batman movies many times…..ok maybe I have only seen Batman and Robin once(it truly is a horrible movie) and most of them are awesome. Seems that the movies should stick with only one sequel….with the exception of The Dark Knight Rises….usually the 3rd in the series is pretty weak…Superman 3 terrible, X-Men 3 weak, Spiderman 3 way too busy…..but it is amazing what movie makes these producers do….lol. Thanks for the visit and the comment.
