Possibly interesting facts about Maureen O’Hara.
1. She was born Maureen FitzSimons in Ireland on November 17th 1920…..she passed away on October 24th, 2015.
2. She was married three times and has one daughter, Brownyn FitzSimons. Her third marriage to Charles F. Blair ended tragically in 1978 when Blair died in an airplane explosion.
3. Oscar® winning actor Charles Laughton gave O’Hara her biggest break in movies after he saw her screen test. Laughton talked a film producer into giving O’Hara a 7 year contract that was later sold to RKO when World War 2 started.
4. Her first major box office hit was How Green Was My Valley which won the Best Picture Oscar® in 1942 and was directed by legendary director John Ford.
5. She would end up making 5 movies with John Ford…..How Green Was My Valley, Rio Grande, The Quiet Man, The Long Gray Line and The Wings of Eagles.
6. Amazingly she was never nominated for an Oscar® or a Golden Globe® nomination in her entire career. How her performance in The Quiet Man did not get a nomination I will never know. She was elected into the Irish Hall of Fame in 2011….I am surprised it took them that long to elect her. In 2014 she was given an Honorary Oscar®….one that was well overdue too.
7. Speaking of The Quiet Man…..she says only three people knew what she whispered into John Wayne’s ear at the end of the movie that gave Wayne the very surprised look….they were John Wayne, John Ford and herself. She says they never told and she never will either.
8. In 2004 she wrote her autobiography. ‘Tis Herself A Memoir is an awesome read with many memorable memories and stories….it is highly recommended.
9. In her memoir she says her goal is to reach the age of 102….my hope is that not only will she reach her goal….but will have to create a new goal when she reaches 102.
10. Check out Maureen O’Hara‘s career compared to current and classic actors. Most 100 Million Dollar Movies of All-Time.
It’s a Cogerson movie page! So rare these days, keep em coming Bruce. Have you done Bill Holden yet? [wink]
Maureen O’ Hara eh? aah lovely girl, I watched The Quiet Man again a few weeks ago in HD, finally remastered, a true classic.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is another favourite she was so young in that, and The Black Swan is one of the best swashbucklers.
Okay I’ve seen… 12 of the 53 films you’ve listed, oh dear, that isn’t impressive at all. It’s her fault she should have made more John Wayne films! [cue Flora wincing] 🙂
I’ve seen 3 from the box office ten and 4 from the critics ten. I still have not seen How Green was my Valley.
Jamaica Inn is not one of my favourite Hitchcock films.
Enjoyed the info and trivia Bruce. Plenty of interesting stats.
Hey Steve…..yep another new Cogerson movie page…and all it took was doctor’s orders to slow down and stay off my feet….lol. Only 12 O’Hara movies watched…..once again we so called “movie experts” get destroyed by Flora in a tally count….Flora 39…Us 22…..I however will be reaching 11 by the end of the day as I have secured my missing Wayne/O’Hara movie…The Wings of Eagles.
How Green Was My Valley is a good movie but certainly not a fun movie to watch over and over…..I would rather watch The Quiet Man for the 50th time versus watching Green Valley for the second time.
So do you like the mud slide fight scene in McLintock as much as I do?…..I just love the fact that they appear to be having some real fun making that movie.
Thanks for the votes and the comment they are both greatly appreciated.
Its been years since I last saw McLintock Bruce but I do remember Maureen O’ Hara mudwrestling.
The newest film I saw O’Hara in was Big Jake, not one of the Duke’s best but Richard Boone was a good villain, alas there was no mudwrestling in the film that I can recall so you can skip that one.
Flooding my e-mails with these movie pages again? Just joking my friend. Interesting read and glad to see she is still alive. I think I have only seen a few of her movies. Only the Lonely and probably couple of the John Wayne ones. Good luck with your surgery, I told you should take it easier
Thanks for the visit hinton….you are the man and I appreciate the support and comment. I think you should watch some more Maureen O’Hara movies….she was a sexy redhead that ought to be right up your alley…lol.
I have always been fond of Maureen O’Hara – she is a classy actress. You have done her proud with these interesting facts, Bruce. My favorite films are The Quiet Man, Miracle on 34th Street, How Green Was My Valley, and McKlintock. May Maureen meet her goal of 102 and then some!
Thanks for the visit drbj…..I was shocked to see that she never got any award recognition….that was just wrong in my opinion. Glad to see that your favorite O’Hara movies did well in the Cogerson Movie Score system….with most being in the Top 5 and the only out of the Top 10 was McLintock….which finished 17th.
I am hoping Ms. O’Hara and Kirk Douglas both make it well past 100….image the stories they could tell.
I am a big fan of Ms. O’Hara. She is still alive and outlived many of her younger costars. she was in a Hitch classic which is not like a Hitch film and without a cameo.
I cannot say which is my favourite specific films, although I prefer her suspense and dramas.
I have even seen her in The Quiet Man where she broke her hand. It is only that one I’ve seen of her films with that person.
In the critics, list I have seen 7.In the box office I have seen 6.
Again, I think it is easier to say how many I HAVE NOT SEEN in terms of the top tens.
Of the top ten overall , I have only missed 4. Overall, I have seen 39 of her films. The ones I see most often have to do with ability to see them on TCM and genre more than anything else. I note with irony the difference between the top tens in box office vs. critics.
I’m more interested in films critics like, I guess.
Ones I always watch if on TCM : How Green Was my Valley – just the other day it was – The hunchback of Notre Dame, Our Man in Havana, not so much Jamaica Inn as it is not normal Hitch, but I do own my own copy. I will watch miracle on 34th Street only if it has not been colourized and only at Christmas time.
Sometimes it is a matter of too much of one thing keeping me from watching a film. I will not watch the other Duke films.
I have tried to watch Mr. Hobbs..several times and I know I will enjoy it in the right mind, but the character of Stewart’s point of view I agree with and I become overwhelmed. Some day!
Thanks for the link this wonderful lady!
Cheers
Flora
Hey Flora…wow 39 movies in your tally count…I am hiding my head as I have to admit that I have only seen 10 of the movies….I have not even seen all the John Wayne/O’Hara movies as Wings of the Eagles is one I never even seen available anywhere.
Not sure if McLintock is one of the movies you have not seen…but it is probably the closest to the Quiet Man than any other movie….complete with an ending scene that mirrors The Quiet Man’s ending as well…..plus it has a mud puddle scene that is classic….I read in her autobiography that she was actually getting over some surgery when they sent her down this hill into a mud pool…I would watch that just for that scene….as you can tell the real stars are sliding down the hill.
I think the movie that made my list of ones to track down was Sitting Pretty….as it did well it all categories and even got Clifton Webb an Oscar nomination for Best Actor….so is that one worth tracking down?
As for Jamaica Inn…I do not think Hitch was really into that movie…as I read that he had one eye on the door as he made that one…and that the carrot of Rebecca was the only reason he agreed to film that one.
Miracle on 47th Street is my mother-in-law’s favorite movie….and she agrees with you….no way will she watch the colorized version…or the remake….give her black and white and she is good to go.
While doing my research I found an address that you can write to her….and I am in the process of sending her a letter…if you are interested just follow the link at the bottom.
As always it is fun talking classic movies with you….even if you blow me out of the water in the tally count..lol…..thanks for the comment and the visit.
McClintlock I have not seen, no. I have seen the mud clip though. I have yet to see Sitting Pretty. Cheers. 🙂
Flora
Hey Flora….well you have seen the best part of McLintock if you have seen the mud clip….it just looks like they were having some serious fun while filming John Wayne’s 1000th fight scene. Well I will let you know how good Sitting Pretty is when I track it down…thanks for the return comment.
Thanks for the e-mail about this page. My mom and my grandmother loved Ms. O’Hara and we used to watch many of her movies together. Such nice memories. Obviously The Quiet Man was one of our favorites. Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation is a really fun movie. My grandmother had a crush on Tyrone Power see we would watch Black Swan all the time. Recently I was watching Pirates of the Caribbean and thought that Keira Knightley owes a lot to Ms. O’Hare as she did the role so many more years ago.
So does this mean you are back doing pages again? I thought you had given up that little hobby of yours. Anyway nice to see a new movie pages from you.
Hey Kelly….thanks for the return visit. I took a break from HP for awhile but I recently found out I need hernia surgery so I have been pretty much grounded and have been spending a ton of time on the computer….so I figured I would write some more hubs. I just watched The Black Swan myself the other day and was amazed that it was 71 years ago…..and more impressed that she is still around.
Thanks for sharing those memories very cool. I love the Quiet Man as well…have not seen Mr. Hobbs yet but I am sure I will find that one soon…as I have been on a James Stewart binge lately….thanks again for checking out my latest movie page.
