    1. Hey Dan…..thanks for the alert to the passing of Max von Sydow. I think you got that news out slightly ahead of Flora. I need to create a page that will allow people to share that information. I will add that one to the list of things to do.

Wow….MVD has one of the biggies on the Oracle list. An impressive 12th place. It is actually pretty amazing that he and Christopher Lee did not work together. Both made a ton of movies….and both worked pretty much at the same exact time….and during 7 different decades.
First list is filled with many many legends. James Earl Jones and Jose Ferrer look like his most frequent Oracle co-stars. Always good to see Sir Caine on a list. Looking at the second list….43 Oscar winning co-stars is a good total…but less than I would have guessed. Good stuff as always. RIP Mr. von Sydow.

  2. Undoubtedly Max Von’s greatest commercial success was The Exorcist but I never liked that film and I remember him most for playing Christ in The Greatest Story Ever Told. Unfortunately (1) in PR terms he almost had the show stolen from him as ‘everyone’ [to employ a Joel generality] was talking about my Duke’s western-drawl utterance of the line “This man truly is the Son of Gawd!” (2) Max never got any formal critical acclaim for his portrayal of Jesus.

My other fave Max V movies are Quiller Memorandum; 3 Days of the Condor; the albeit inferior remake of Bob Wagner’s A Kiss Before Dying; Shutter Island; Minority Report; and Flash Cogerson.

It says a lot for Flora that she liked The 7th Seal because it has long been a big fave with reviewers and other connoisseurs of art house films and Wikipedia says about it “The film was readily appreciated by intellectual audiences.” Flora’s post on the site index page deserves a place on Max’s own page so I have taken the liberty of copying it across to this page; but I hesitate to claim 7th Seal for one of my own best liked movies because the last time I made such a claim Steve accused me of being an art house snob!

Max’s net worth is put at $16 million by Celebrity Net Worth site [coincidentally the identical net worth of his Exorcist co star Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn’s is $20 million]. IMDB credits Max with 27 acting awards and 25 noms and they include an Oscar nom for Extremely Loud the commercial failure of which Sandra Bullock’ agent laid squarely at the sole door of Hanks; and Max received a Golden Globe nom for The Exorcist.

Excellent quick out of the blocks profile of Max’s career Work Horse; I especially like paras 3 and 5 of your Trivia section; and I have copied to this page from site index page your opening tribute to Max. “Vote Up!”

    1. Hey Bob
      1. Thanks again for bringing over the other comments to this page.
      2. Good points on his role as JC in The Greatest Story Ever Told.
      3. I like you favorite MVD movies too….I just recently saw The Quiller Memorandum
      4. Thanks for the information on his net worth and awards.
      5. Thanks for the kind words….I am crazy busy these days….but glad I found the time to do this MVD tribute. Good stuff as always.
Rest in Peace Mr. von Sydow.

      1. HI BRUCE: Thanks for the feedback. Like The 3rd Man The Quiller Memorandum had a haunting theme tune if I remmeber correctly. It was written by John Barry who wrote the scores for the early Bond films and in fact according to IMDB Barry wrote the Quiller music between composing for 1965’s Thunderball and 1967’s You Only Live Twice.

Indeed as your charts have picked up the enormous success of the Bond franchise spawned in the 1960s and beyond a glut of spy/spy related movies like Quiller and even spoof spy flicks like Dino’s Matt Helm series; and of course James Coburn became a star for a time with the tongue in cheek Derek Flint pictures in 1966 and 1967.

Hitherto James had spent a long pprenticeship in supporting roles starting with Randy’s Ride Lonesome in 1959. After the success of Flint he was able to secure a promised share of the profits of 1968’s Candy; and he was strong enough to sue the producers of that film when they tried to hide the profits.

Rightly so as Candy cost just $20 million to make in today’s money and you credit it with a whopping adjusted US gross of nearly $150 million; on top of which it did well abroad because of its pornographic theme of the kind that tends to attract big audiences in overseas markets. Ironically though according to Wikipedia it did eventually [assuming fibs were not stillbeing told] go into loss because of the massive fees/profits paid to the likes of Coburn/Brando/Burton/Matthau/John Huston – and even the boxer Sugar Ray Robinson in a cameo. As Hirsch has observed those guys [particularly Marlon and Richard] tended not to come cheap!

Rest in Peace Max Von Sydow. My favorite role of his is in Three Days of the Condor. One of the best hit men in movies. RIP.

  5. First, an editing needs to be done. In the second paragraph, you still have Ed Begley’s name at the bottom of it.

Thanks for doing this on such short notice, especially considering with all his Swedish films, the box office makes it look like the films are not as great as they are.

I have seen 8 Max Von Sydow movies listed in this table. According to my Letterboxd account, I have seen 9 of his films. Not sure what the missing title is, I am guessing it is Swedish. I know my total is not high, but the films I have seen I watch multiple times.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Three Days of the Condor.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is The Exorcist, a film I have no intention of ever seeing.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen The Quiller Memorandum.

    Favourite Max Von Sydow Movies:

    Three Days of the Condor
    The Seventh Seal
    Never Say Never Again

Other Max Von Sydow Movies I Have Seen:

    Awakenings
    What Dreams May Come
    The Greatest Story Ever Told
    Wild Strawberries
    The Quiller Memorandum

    1. Hey Flora
      1. Thanks for sharing the sad news about MVD’s passing.
      2. Thanks for the headsup on my error…..that has been fixed.
      3. Yep…those many Swedish films caused some issues…and many were left off due to the fact that I could not find box office information.
      4. Tally count….8 for you….9 counting your Letterboxd total. I have seen 28 of his movies. Only two of his Bergman movies….The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries.
      5. I am right there with you on Three Days of the Condor. It would make my Top 5….along with Flash Gordon (guilty pleasure), Minority Report (wow a Cruise movie I really like), Shutter Island and Conan 1 (another guilty pleasure).
      Good stuff as always.
