  1. For Max personally his Oscar-winning turn in Judgement at Nuremberg may well have been his most successful but I remember him best as Brando’s commanding officer in 1958’s The Young Lions [Max’s Hollywood debut film]. Their scene together on a speeding motorcycle was electrifying for me.

It was good to see Brando and Max reprising their screen relationship 32 years later in 1990’s The Freshman -see tables above – when they were both in their sixties and no longer “young lions”!

The pair reportedly always got on well together and among the things that they had in common was that each had a sister who acted in mainstream Hollywood movies: Maria Schell [The Brothers Karamazov/Cimarron 1960 and Cooper’s The Hanging Tree] and Jocelyn Brando [The Big Heat as Glenn Ford’s wife and 2 of her ‘little’ brother’s movies The Ugly American and The Chase]

2nd to The Young Lions my 2nd favorite Max Schell film was 1965’s Return from the Ashes which I see is given a respectable 67% rating above but did not attract good audiences.

  2. If you like religious movies I recommend both The Chosen and The Reluctant Saint with Mr. Schell. The latter one I saw on some cheapo boxed set with 50 films. I know Two Women with Sophia Loren’s Oscar winning performance was also on that set.

Maximillian Schell is # 173 on the 2020 Oracle of Bacon list. Here are the others on the list he has appeared with.

    1. Hey Dan.
      1. As always….thank you.
      2. So Mr. Schell has a spot in the Top 200….that is surprising.
      3. FYI…..I had a huge problem spelling his first name….must have messed up 10 times while putting together this page.
      4. Liv Ullman gets the honors for most frequent Oracle co-star….just saw her in Shame last night.
      5. Over a third of her Oscar winning co-stars come from A Bridge Too Far and Judgment at Nuremberg.
      6. Over half if you add in Julia.
      7. The Chosen will be on the table in the near future…not sure how I did not include that one in the table.
      Good stuff as always.

  3. Maximilian Schell will always best be remembered for his outstanding performance as the defence lawyer for the 4 Nazi judges in Judgment at Nuremberg. I have seen this film about 5 times and never tire of Schell’s excellent characterization and I still shudder when I hear him interogating poor Judy Garland. None of his other roles come as close to that one. I have seen 11 of the films on the list, and aside from Judgment (which is one of my all time favorites), I liked Topkapi, A Bridge Too Far, Return from the Ashes, and The Odessa File. I thought The Young Lions was good but a bit over-rated, or perhaps too dated. Another film I liked, The Chosen, is not on the list.

    1. Hey PhilHoF17…good to hear from you. Glad to see you survived 2020. I agree with you about his performance in Judgment at Nuremberg. He was well deserving of Oscar win. For a long time I got Schell and Paul Schofield mixed up. Tally count: Congrats…you come back and put up a win: PhilHoF17 12 (includes The Chosen), me 11, Flora 10 and bob cox 8. Not sure what happened to The Chosen. During your absence we had a serious database meltdown……months later and we are still having lots of issues. Wow you are the third person to mention Topkapi…..I do not even remember Schell’s part in that one. As for The Young Lions…..great cast…..but they are given little to do. Good stuff.

      1. Cogerson, i just noticed Topkapi was schell’s second highest UMR review.
strangely, i liked julia best of his top movies but i really dislike jane fonda. no favorites here.
thanks again for your hard work on best actor oscar winners.

  4. I have seen 10 Maximilian Schell movies, including the top 5 films.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Judgement at Nuremburg.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Deep Impact.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is St. Ives.

    Favourite Maximilian Schell Movies:

    A Bridge Too Far
    Topkapi

Other Maximilian Movies I Have Seen:

    Judgement at Nuremburg
    Julia
    The Young Lions
    The Black Hole
    The Odessa File
    Cross of Iron
    The Deadly Affair
    St. Ives

    1. Hey Flora….thanks for checking out our latest classic page. Tally count: PhilHoF17 12 (The Chosen is back on the page), Cogerson 11,you 10 and bob cox at 8. Both you and bob cox mentioned Topkapi as your favorites…I guess I need to go back and revisit that one….it did not leave a lasting impression on me. I love A Bridge Too Far. I have seen 5 of your “other” movies. Good stuff as always.

  5. I saw 8 including 6 of top 7. 10s not favorites : judgement at Nuremburg, young lions. 9s not favorites: topkapi(hidden gem) Julia, a bridge too far.
.cross of iron an 8 harsh, dark look at Russian front with explicit sexuality..
deep impact a well made 8 with Oscar worthy Robert duvall( one of my favorite actors), also morgan freeman and tea leoni , Elijah wood, james Cromwell , vanessa redgrave as well as maximilian.
.only movie I have seen and disliked by maximilian is the freshman a 4/10 with brando. my apologies to The Bob.
Cogerson thank you for another best actor Oscar winner. great page. happy 2021.

    1. Hey bob cox….thanks for the visit and the feedback. Tally count: PhilHoF17 12 (The Chosen is back on the page), Cogerson 11,Flora 10 and you at 8. I have seen and liked all the ones you rated 8 or higher. I liked The Freshman more than you….not thinking it is one of Bob Roy’s favorite Marlon Brando movies. Good stuff as always.

      1. “not thinking it is one of Bob Roy’s favorite Marlon Brando movies.” – Cogerson above referring to The Freshman.

I found The Freshman mildly entertaining but I remember it most for the hype it got because in it Marlon sent up his legendary Don Corleone character for fun. Reviews for Freshman were generally favorable as reflected in the fine 70% rating for it in the review column above.

Unfortunately coming out in 1990 Freshman was too late for observant appraisal in THAT 1983 book so we will never have the benefit of the DEFINITIVE critical view of the film’s qualities.

That though doesn’t stop one from fantasizing about the superlatives that might otherwise have flowed had the stars properly aligned, the author of the 1983 book being such a fan of the movie’s lead actor !!
