    The first time I saw Meryl Streep was in a série called Holocaust and the last time I saw her was in a série Big little lies with a lot of actresses between I saw her in so many films from Prada to îKramer and Mama Mia to Out of Africa Etc but I have to write there is a treasur song in the last série Big little lies, a song from C C R interpreted by Paula and Willie Nelson and which is called «  Have you ever seen the rain coming down on a sunny
    It is so perfect and wonderful to hear that I have to make a comment on this page because in this série she plaid so great and not a very easy part anyway Creedence Clairwater Revival in the 70 was one my favorite Group and this song was in my head for

    2. Hey Pierre. Good to hear from you and thanks for sharing your thoughts on Meryl Streep. I have actually not seen her Holocaust….but it is a mini-series I have known about for many many years. Good information on the song on Big Little Lies. I have read that her performance in that show is incredible….probably going to be an Emmy award winning performance in the near future. Glad the song got you to visit us…I will keep an ear open for that song. Good feedback.

  2. Meryl Streep is listed as the greatest actress of all time in IMDB’s “Ultimate” List of best actresses historically with previous front runner Katie Hepburn 2nd, Bergman 3rd and Davis 4th.

    Meryl is also No 1 on Bruce’s list of 25 Greatest Actress Legends 1950-2010 and if anyone wants a fight with HIM about the matter I’ll hold their coat! I know when I’m beaten but then I’m Irish!

    Best POSTERS for my money in Entries 40-21 of your Streep video are Hope Springs, Rendition, Music of the Heart, The River Wild, foreign language one for It’s Complicated, Florence Foster Jenkins, Mama Mia 2, the 1st one for Devil Wears Prada, August: Osage County, Lions for Lambs [showing strangely Meryl getting billed after Redford but before Cruise who is supposed to be as jealous about his billing as McQueen and Tracy were] and a truly splendid one for The Manchurian Candidate. Your sources are obviously still excellent because I have not seen one as good as yours for that movie.

    A nice run of STILLS as well with my own pick being (1) with Jack in Heartbeat (2) with DeNiro (3) Into the Woods (4) as “Maggie” (5) with the Bruce who has talent in Death Becomes Her (6) with Jim Carrey – whatever happened to him? He has made only one [enormous flop] movie in the past 4 years and the last film that he had which crashed Bruce’s magical 100 million barrier was almost 10 years ago, A Christmas Carol in 2009 and (7) Meryl as “The Devil”.

    I will enjoy “reviewing” and commenting on entries 1-20 tomorrow. Hope you are having a pleasant weekend.

            Hi “Teach!” That’s how they address my Glenn in Blackboard Jungle. Here’s an unusual Bob story. When I joined the Northern Ireland Civil Service in the 1960s one of my colleagues was a guy named Robert Thomas Bill [Bill was actually his surname] and was known to us as Tom. One day we all attended an internal training course and at the end of it one of the top brass came round to discuss how we had found the course and not knowing any of us personally he asked each of us in turn how we liked to be addressed.

            When he came to Tom Bill he asked him what he liked to be called, Robert or Bob for example. Tom Bill stood up eyes blazing and said “Don’t you dare call me either! I was called Robert after my grandfather and he didn’t leave me anything in his will. The only person I allow call me that name is a 93 year old aunt who’s still alive.” The big boss was severely taken aback as we all where but I’m sure you have encountered prickly students in your time.

            BURT REYNOLDS Maybe they’ve all been following your site but it seems everybody wants to go into teaching. I’ve just read an interview with Burt and he says he now teaches acting classes every Friday night at a local college. His students are bound to ask him about other actors and I just hope they don’t ask him too many questions about Brando. As I’ve said before there would be a lot of painful memories there as Marlon used to insult him publicly, rubbish him in public and used the Brando influence with Coppola to deny Burt the Caan role in Godpop.

            By the way Burt is delighted with the reception of The Last Movie Star, which he says has brought him his best reviews since his heyday years ago.

            EL LITTLE ENGLANDER Know anything about the Little One’s whereabouts? He usually surfaces at some stage in a 24 hour period to kick someone’s a** [preferably mine!] but the last I have seen anything from him has been his response to that sketch of Robin Williams and his 3 executive co-stars a day ago.

            By the way be sure you give Steve Lensman credit for the Little Englander posts in your top UMR Contributors calculations. These English guys have an enormous sense of entitlement you know!

          2. PART TWO
            Meryl Streep is the idol of my Julia Roberts who cried when she heard they would work together in August: Osage County and ceded top billing to Meryl in the movie. However I have never found Streep an attractive actress to watch and her, to me at least, cold screen personality does not entertain me so I try to avoid her films.

            However objectively I cannot argue that she is a cracking actress who deserves much credit for her substantial success in movies, her great reputation and the admiration that she generally attracts for her acting so I welcome your Streep video profiling comprehensively a great career.

            My favourite POSTERS 1-20 are Doubt, Cry in the Dark, Silkwood, Postcards from the Edge Julia, The Post [surprised she got billed above Hanks a bigger box office star than she and her equal in the acting stakes] The Hours, Adaptation, The Fantastic Mr Hirschhorn and the foreign language ones for Myrna’s’s Choice, the Deer Hunter and The English’ Lieutenant’s Woman.

            Super STILLS the best in my opinion being in fact most of them (1) the Mamma Mia ensemble (2) Meryl with Kurt and Cherilyn (3) with Clint (4) with Redford in Out of Africa [possibly my fave Streep film of those I have seen] (5) solo of “W o Kramer” and (6) a super, super one from The Deer Hunter.

            When that movie was released in 1978 DeNiro despite Taxi Driver had not quite peaked as the Legend he is today and he was still somewhat in the shadow of the likes of Pacino, Brando and Nicholson and in one review of Deer Hunter the columnist referred to him as “The Batman-jawed Robert DeNiro.” However Colin Firth got it right when he said in a recent interview “In the 80s and 90s everyone was talking about DeNiro.”

            You and the guy who seems to think HIS ratings are the definitive ones agree.on just 3 of Meryl’s Top 6 best reviewed, Deer Hunter, Manhattan and Adaptation. Surprised The Work Horse has Cogerson v Cogerson so low. It’s your No 3 but he has it 19th . Overall your video is easily a 97.5%presentation in my scoring. Very enjoyable

          3. HI STEVE Thanks for comprehensive feedback on my Streep posts. I liked the quote about Maggie though whatever Meryl thought about The Iron Lady as a historical icon Meryl’s actual politics are diametrically opposed to those of Mrs T and President Trump.

            Anyway another Englishman story as they are such harmless fun! You may have seen the recent exchanges about Our Leader being a party animal. I have never been a partygoer in the normal sense but I am a party animal –it’s just that HERE is where I do my partying and when for example a comment from Joel appears I break into song with a verse of “Send in the Clowns – Don’t bother they’re here”.

            However I do attend a small social gathering where we tell stories, crack jokes and even get up and sing. One among our gathering is a retired English Army Major called Graham who’s a massive chap [let’s call him El Big Englander – or Big E]. He is one of my personal favourites and had I not developed a soft spot for you guys when I lived among you Graham would certainly have won me over to the English.

            Big E always without fail treats us to a singing performance of The Last Farewell a song from Roger Whittaker which English service personnel of officer rankseem to regard as patriotic because Big E tells me it is about an Englishman who forsakes a tropical paradise to go off and fight for the England he loves

            There’s a ship lies in the harbor
            Tomorrow for old England she sets sail
            Even now I see the foreign flag a-blazing
            Their guns on fire as we sail into hell
            Though death and darkness gather all around me
            My ship be torn apart upon the swell
            And should I return home safe to England
            I shall watch the English mist roll through the dale.

            I can’t sing so my party piece is to crack jokes about the English which have everyone in stitches – especially Big E [Thank Heavens!] because as an “exile” over here he’s just happy to hear his fellow countrymen getting ANY attention and of course he knows how fond I actually am of the Limeys as Big E and I have had many chats about my days among you!

      Whoa does no one like Meryl Streep? Flora and Greg confessed they can’t stand her on my video channel. Bruce has seen all her films but than he watches anything, not sure where he stands on Streep. Me? I don’t like actors or actresses. [Stop lying Steve!] Maybe The Donald is a fan. No? Not even the President? Oh dear.

      Anyway she has won quite a few awards and zillions of nominations too. Only 10 of the 40 movies on my video don’t have any sort of awards info, beat that Bette!

      Three Meryl Streep films have scored 10 out of 10 from my sauces – Kramer vs Kramer, Manhattan and The Deer Hunter.

      Seven more have scored 9 out of 10 including – Out of Africa and Adaptation. And 20 more have scored 8 out of 10, whoa! Not bad. She must have a few fans somewhere.

      The Deer Hunter tops all the charts including Bruce’s UMR chart, Manhattan tops Bruce’s critics chart.

      Hey Bob you’re right Kramer vs Kramer just barely made Bruce’s critics top 20 chart and I think that’s one of the chief’s favorites, what went wrong there? it was nearly no.1 on my chart. I’ve never seen it.

      Streep on playing Margaret Thatcher – “The prospect of exploring the swathe cut through history by this remarkable woman is a daunting and exciting challenge. I consider all the roles I play a privilege but this one was special because there are such vehement opinions about her. People seemed to look at her as an icon or a monster and I just wanted to locate the human being inside those caricatures that we’ve seen over so many years. And to investigate myself what it must have been like for her.”

    “The most Oscar nominated thespian of all-time…..though I suspect many times it is her name rather than the performance that got the nomination….can you say Into The Woods, Florence Foster Jenkins and Music From The Heart. Let’s see, seen almost of these movies. Overall I have seen 38 of the movies listed here (missing Mamma Mia 2 and Cry In the Dark) and 48 movies overall…my page lists an additional 15 movies. Favorites from this video include #37 Hope Springs….I liked the chemistry between Streep and Jones. #30 Death Becomes Her…come on…it’s got Bruce Willis in it. #20 Defending Your Life….fun movie..one of Albert Brooks’ best movies. #13 Silkwood….good drama #1 The Deer Hunter….depressing but good. Nice video on an acting legend. Voted up and shared.”

    1. Hi Bruce, I was surprised at how many nominations and awards Streep received when putting this video together. Only 10 of the 40 films here have no nominations or awards info. Amazing. Like composer John Williams they were automatically handing out nominations because of who they were and not on whether they really deserved it. But she is highly respected. Flora and Greg aren’t impressed, they don’t like her. Anyway 38 out of 40 is incredible, do you watch every movie that comes out? I’ve seen 10, Flora 4 and Greg says he’s seen about 8. Hey Steve…I try and watch every movie that gets a major release…..looking at the Top UMR of 2017…I am at 85 movies watched currently…..at the Top 100 UMR movies of 2018…I am up to seeing 50 of those movies. By doing this…I am able to see lots of current stars movies…so even though I am not a huge Meryl fan…I have watched most of her movies. Of the two missing ones…Mamma Mia 2 is in theaters…and I have seen bits and pieces of Cry in the Dark….one day I will watch that one from beginning to end. Happy to share your video, here.
