Want to know the best Michael Caine movies? How about the worst Michael Caine movies? Curious about Michael Caine box office grosses or which Michael Caine movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Michael Caine movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.
My father introduced me to Michael Caine (1933-) in the movie The Man Who Would Be King. Since that 1975 movie I have followed his career very closely. I am probably one of the few people on Earth who not only saw The Swarm at the theater but also Beyond the Poseidon Adventure at the theater. After years of struggling as an actor, in the mid 1960s he finally became a star with the British films Zulu, Alfie, and Ipcress Files. Since then he has starred in roughly 90 movies. Over the years Caine has received 6 Oscar® nominations and 2 Oscar® wins. Not only is he still popular after a 60 plus year career but he is still appearing in some the biggest movies out there (Inception, Batman trilogy). Currently he is director Christopher Nolan’s good luck charm. Caine has appeared in the last 7 Nolan films (he has an uncredited voice role in 2017’s Dunkirk).
His IMDb page shows over 170 acting credits since 1956. In the table below, Ultimate Movie Rankings ranks his movies in 6 different sortable columns. Television roles, cameos, shorts and straight to DVD movies were not included in the rankings.

Our Personal Top Ten Michael Caine Movies
Adjusted Michael Caine Adjusted Worldwide Box Office Grosses
If you do a comment….please ignore the email address and website section.
One of my favourites.
Right there with you Kleening….he along with Cary Grant and Bruce Willis make up my Top 3 actors….thanks for sharing your thoughts on Sir Michael Caine.
1 STEVE As I’ve said before on this site Sir Maurice, Sir Sean and Sir Dirk are probably my 3 all-time favourite Brit actors. Indeed just as I’ve tired of Bond I have become largely bored with the superhero franchises with their seemingly endless bouts of frantic action, with the one exception in recent times being the Batman series because of Sir Maurice’s outings as Alfred which makes up for a lot of the for my taste repetitive action sequences in the series. I suppose I maybe shouldn’t concede that as it gives some credence to WH’s inclination to credit actors with the box office grosses of movies in which they have just supporting roles! However it is obvious that box office is not a consideration in my preference of the less showy Harry Palmer and George Smiley over the more flamboyant and sophisticated James Bond
2. Two great opening quotes in your Joe Micklewhite video and you and WH agree on 4 of the Top 5 films. Your glut of wonderful posters in this presentation left me spoilt for choice and just able to randomly select some of the most pleasing ones – Gambit, The Quiet American, Educating Rita, Dressed to Kill, the Batman ones and the stunning first of the two from Alfie.
3 Excellent stills were those from The Italian Job and Batman Begins and the one of what I took to be Sir Maurice in drag unless you’ve fooled me again by superimposing another one of Myrna Loy in a strange wig!
4 It has been worth a 96% rating for me to view your profile of one of my all-time favourite actors and indeed the posters for Ipcress File and Alfie have an especially strong nostalgic appeal for me as those two movies were doing the rounds of cinemas in Great Britain when I was serving my last two years with the English Armed Forces in 1965/66. I can remember vividly sitting at a matinee in London and watching The Ipcress File one afternoon in 1965. That represents another situation in which I have an advantage over the Work Horse because it means if Bruce has accurately quoted his own age to us I was enjoying Sir Maurice’s movies before WH was ever even About – and the pun IS intended! Anyway hats off to you for a super video!
Hi Bob, thanks for the generous rating and review, much appreciated, glad you liked the posters and stills. I hope this made up for the Daniel Craig video in which you weren’t familiar with the films.
Harry Saltzman produced the Harry Palmer films, so there is a strong Bond connection there and I think John Barry did the score for the first one. Maurice Binder also worked on the HP series, he of course created the memorable credit sequences for many of the Bond films.
Did you know – Len Deighton’s hero was unnamed in the novels, you can’t get more secretive than that! It was Michael Caine who came up with the name Harry Palmer for the movie versions.
Michael Caine in drag? Which poster? He did appear in drag in one movie but it would be a huge spoiler to mention the title.
Caine’s top 10 contains 5 Christopher Nolan movies. 3 in the top 3! How often does that happen – the top 3 movies by the same director?
Looking at my files Caine has 7 films scoring 10 out of 10 from various sources – Quills, The Cider House Rules, Hannah and Her Sisters, Zulu, The Man Who Would Be King, Sleuth and The Dark Knight..
HI STEVE
1 Ever since you fooled me with that Myrna Loy still I’ve lost a degree of confidence in my ability to pick the unnamed female co-stars in the photos in your videos and therefore to compensate I fasten on the females more than previously in the hope of spotting more tricks on your part. In the still for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels [which I haven’t seen] I concentrated on the actress beside Steve Martin and thought it was again Sir Maurice in makeup and drag as he was so disguised in that other movie to which you alluded. Upon a second viewing of the video I now realise that Sir M was standing to the other side of Martin.
2 That’s all academic though as I remain well pleased with the still.
Hohoho that was funny Bob, no the girl in the still is Glenne Headly, she appeared in a bunch of films around that time but I can’t recall seeing her in any movies since then. Hollywood is tough on actresses, as they get older they seem to disappear (or end up on TV).
Looking at Bruce’s Caine page, he left out the trivia box on this one, and included his 10 favorite movies instead. I can’t see The Swarm among his favorites, an oversight? [wink] I have that film on DVD, he shamlessly admitted.
STEVE
Thanks for identifying Glenne Headly.
I see that despite being castigated by the host of your site as a mumbler Mr M’s video has now reached a respectable views benchmark of 1K A lot of others have chalked up even more impressive numbers and you are to be congratulated on that so well done.
Thanks for the tip Bob. Passing the 1000 views milestone on my channel is noteworthy, good to see Mr. Mumbles hasn’t been forgotten in the mists of time… and no thumbs down for the video either. One of my recent videos had a thumbsdown almost as soon as I published it. It’s a harsh world. 🙂
1000 views, Bruce can only dream of reaching 1000 views on his pages, let me check how many views this page has, maybe 20 or 30, let’s see…. whaaaaaat? I’m flabbergasted. Someone should notify Caine and tell him, cheer the old geezer up a bit now he’s in his dotage. [wink wink]
Hey Steve….your video channel is growing leaps and bounds congrats my friend….it is great to see your hard work paying off. Thanks for doing a Michael Caine video.
Hey Steve….Sir Michael was one of the first pages written…..and the trivia part was not being done at that time….and I have never gone back and done that….but I think I should. My favorite memory of writing this page.
Timeline March 2011
WoC: Do you want help putting some of these numbers into the program
Cogerson: Sure if you want to…but this pretty boring stuff
WoC: The more I help the sooner you will come to bed.
Cogerson: Good point….thanks.
Fast forward the VHS tape about a hour and we are still plugging in numbers.
WoC: How many movies does this damn guy have?
What I should have said:
Cogerson: Not enough baby…..not enough baby.
What I did say:
We can stop…I will finish tomorrow.
Some sad news. We mentioned Glenne Headly in our posts recently, reading Hollywood Reporter online a few minutes ago there’s a report that she has died, aged 63.
I’ll always remember her as the girl who turned the tables on Caine and Martin in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, she also appeared as Warren Beatty’s girlfriend in Dick Tracy and Richard Dreyfuss’s wife in Mr. Holland’s Opus.
RIP.
Now this is a case of bad theory of repetition….for the first time ever Glenne Headly was talked about on our website….and then the next day she passes away.
One versus of Theory of Repetition is once you see something you will see it very soon. For example….you are talking to somebody about your favorite singer….the very next time you turn on a radio….that singer has a song playing on the radio. The quicker the the second “appearance” the greater the Theory of Repetition.
Hey Steve…I first noticed her in Fandango and Purple Rose of Cairo. She worked with some of my all-time favorites…Bruce Willis twice, Caine once, Dreyfuss once. I did not even notice that she had been married to John Malkovich. Thanks for the heads up yesterday.
Rest in Peace Glenne Headly
Still think Dirty Rotten Scroundrels is way too low on Steve’s video.
Hey Bob….hats off to you for being a Michael Caine fan longer than I have been alive. Good review and rating on Steve’s Caine video…which I just watched myself this morning. It is indeed a good video……my only question….what took him so long to give Sir Caine his due? ….lol.
BRUCE//STEVE
1 You queried why it had taken so long for Steve to provide us with a Micklewhite video. My father was a great fan of Jack Nicklaus whom many regard as the greatest ever golfer and who certainly holds the most majors. So determined was my dad to see Nicklaus’ status guarded that dad rubbished every great golfer who came after Jack.
2 That mind set could also have been at work in a Lensman/Heston/Caine scenario. It is possible that Steve has been so subconsciously anxious for Chuck’s superstar standing to be protected from competition that he is outside his comfort zone when profiling great stars who achieved stardom after Chuck, so he delayed the Micklewhite profile as long as he could
Funny comment Bob….no matter why Steve finally gave Caine his due….I am just happy.
• Video report by ITV News Correspondent Richard Pallot
The infamous Hatton Garden heist is now the subject of a new film which tells the story of the group of elderly men who pulled off what has been called the largest burglary in English legal history. The burglary took place over Easter weekend in 2015, and saw some of the men pose as workmen and then drill their way into the vault, before making off with jewellery and other valuables.
The men were experienced thieves and had meticulously planned the £200 million heist.
All but one of them was eventually imprisoned.Even the judge at the trial remarked that the burglary was in a “class of its own”.
A quartet of veteran British actors, led by Michael Caine, are in talks for Working Title’s film about the audacious Hatton Garden robbery.Joining Caine as members of a gang of elderly villains who pulled off the heist in 2015 are Jim Broadbent, Michael Gambon and Ray Winstone. Caine is likely to play Brian Reader, the 76-year-old who was sentenced to six years in jail for his ringleader role in the robbery Caine had previously expressed interest in a role in the film, saying: “That story, the four guys in Hatton Garden, they are very, very tough … I’ve heard my name and Ray Winstone’s name mentioned. I would do it in an instant.”
“You’re only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!”
One of Michael Caine’s most famous movie lines ever….:)
Hey Bob….thanks for sharing this information on Sir Michael. I heard Caine talking about that movie when he was making the rounds to push Going In Style. So hopefully he will be making that movie soon. I also hope he pops up in some capacity in Dunkirk. Nolan kept the Matt Damon role quiet…maybe he is doing the same with Caine in Dunkirk. Seems there would have to be a role for Caine in Nolan’s latest movie.
Winstone and Caine appeared in Last Call a few years ago…..that is a nice little movie….with Bob Hoskins in a very good role. A quick look on IMDb shows Caine only has one movie in development…Coup d’Etat….hope to see the Hatton Garden heist pop up soon. Thanks for again for the information.
HI BRUCE The Mail on Sunday newspaper over here has just published a lengthy interview with Sir Maurice in the past few weeks and I thought you might be interested in some of the main matters discussed –
(1) Sir M used to drink heavily but 10 years ago cut back drastically to better cope with ageing.
(2) He is still fuming about legally giving up his birth name to obtain documentation consistency for easier passage through airports
(3) When he was a young nobody he strayed into an abandoned London Theatre and found Chaplin there reminiscing over times long gone when he Charlie appeared in that theatre. Although he did not know the young Maurice from Adam Chaplin chatted with him and told him of how he had once appeared in that theatre with Stan Laurel. I think that Sir Maurice is lucky to have that memory whereas ironically Charlie couldn’t have known that he was talking to a future fellow-Great.
(4) Sir M told the Mail on Sunday that he was very lucky at 84 to be still getting great parts. Clearly the Curse of 39 which afflicts most females had no power to touch a legend like Sir Maurice
(5) Sir M starts shooting Hatton Garden next month which is another heist film with Sir Maurice playing the mastermind of the robbery who is 73 in the movie [He’s being allowed to young down like Randy and Joel!]. Co-starring with Sir Maurice is Sir Michael Gambon highly respected TV, film and theatre performer over here whom Sir Maurice described as his own best “mate” as he put it.
[Cue for Dan to step in and link up one of your idols with mine
(6) I saw an interview with Gambon recently in which he mentioned that one of his own closest friends for years had been the late Mr Mumbles and that the pair had met regularly over the years when visiting each other’s countries. Sir Michael Gambon sorely missed his late mumbling friend.
Hey Bob….gotta love when actors are making the rounds pushing movies…as they gave countless interviews. Last week I must have watched hours of Caine television interviews…normally with Freeman and Arkin.
Very cool story about Caine and Chaplin. Caine can tell a story for sure. I think Caine can pull off playing 10 years younger. Good to know that Brando and Gambon were such good friends. As for the Bacon Oracle….Mr. Daniel Radcliffe connects. Radcliffe was Caine’s son in Now You See Me 2….and was Gambon’s star student in 6 Harry Potter movies.
Thanks for sharing all of this information on one of my all-time favorites….Sir Michael Caine.

STEVE My thoughts were more on YOU last night than on the mysterious absence of the Work Horse** I viewed Sir Maurice Micklewhite in Youth (2015) a slow talkative film that held my attention because Sir M as always was highly watchable and he and Harvey Keitel had some marvellous scenes together. Also Jane Fonda gave a riveting albeit foul-mouthed cameo. However I wasn’t sure if you would like it because Sir M plays a retired music conductor who dogmatically rejects several requests from the Queen of England to perform his music for her at Buckingham Palace. I see that in his new movie Sir M is billed 2nd to Morgan Freeman. For once one of my idols trumps an idol of WH!
**Maybe when he next turns up it will be lurking in a darkened doorway in Vienna
