Michael Keaton (1951-) is an American Oscar nominated actor who has appeared in many box office hits over the last three decades. Keaton appeared in numerous television shows before getting his big break in Ron Howard’s 1982 Nightshift. After the success of Nightshift, Keaton appeared in numerous comedies like Mr. Mom, Gung Ho and his first blockbuster hit Beetlejuice.

After the success of Beetlejuice, Keaton moved to the world of Bruce Wayne and Batman. Michael Keaton’s post Batman career has not been as successful.  Recently he has appeared in more supporting roles and has had great success providing his voice in the Pixar blockbusters….Cars and Toy Story 3.

His IMDb page shows over 80 acting credits since 1975. This page will rank Michael Keaton movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, cameos and movies that were not released in theaters were not included in the rankings.

  1. Hi Cog; I remember when the Tim burton “Batman” film was first announced, we were so excited until we heard that comedian Michael Keaton was playing the role. We were so disappointed and convinced the film was going to stink. (None of us had seen the film “Clean and Sober” were Keaton proved he had the acting chops to do a non-comedy role). There was wide-spread disgruntlement. No one I knew thought keaton could handle the role.

Well, he proved us wrong. He’s still my favorite Batman. (All due respect to Adam West.)

    Rob

    1. Hey Rob..thanks for checking out my Michael Keaton page. Yep I remember the whole Keaton will ruin Batman debate…..and nobody worried about Batman when Clooney took over….and yet Keaton worked out fine and Clooney killed that franchise….at least for awhile. He is very good in Clean and Sober….which was one of the few movies from the creator of the classic tv show Moonlighting. Thanks for the comments and the compliment.

      1. To be fair to Clooney, that whole film “Batman and Robin” was a mess from A to Z. The script, the performances and the directing. It wasn’t Clooney alone that ruined the franchise. I mean, the Bat American express card? And Mr. Freeze having his men sing the Cold Miser song from “Year without a Santa Claus?

        Yuck!

        Rob

        1. Rob – I’m not sure Bruce wants to be fair to Clooney – he’s not a fan. 🙂 But yes, you know it’s a bad sign when a franchise teams up with a credit card.

          1. Hey Flora….you are correct I want to be put the entire blame on Clooney….but I am sure the finished movie was not what Clooney thought it would be when he signed up to make the movie. So that is kinda of a positive comment on Clooney from me…lol.

        2. Hey Rob….I actually saw Batman and Robin at the theater and about 3 minutes into the movie I was already thinking this is going to be a terrible movie…and I was not wrong in that thought. It is one of the three worst movies I saw in the theater….Batman and Robin, Ace Ventura When Nature Calls and Little Nicky…and all three I had to watch the entire movie because my kids were having such a wonderful time watching the movies…but now that they are grown up….they finally agree with me.

But I agree Clooney does not get all the blame….I think the director Joel Schumacher actually needs to receive the majority of the blame.

  2. Hiya Cogerson, I love Michael Keaton.. he will always be Batman to me. I lost interest in Batman movies when the producers replaced Michael Keaton. Awesome hub about Michael Keaton, full of interesting information.. now I know that Michael Keaton was the voice of Ken in Toy Story 3. Good job! Voted up, awesome and most definitely interesting. Cheers!

    Have a nice day,

    Rosie

    1. Hey Rosie2010….thanks for checking my Keaton hub. I think Keaton actually turned down Batman Forever because he did not like the director that the new director wanted to go in(which turned out to the opinion of lots of people). Thanks for the votes up and for the comments and the compliment…they are greatly appreciated.

  3. Well father, thank you for the kind words and appreciate the movie page just for me. I have always liked Keaton especially as Batman. Honestly I like his and Burtons more than Bale and Nolan, even though the new ones are awesome. I still remember watching Night Shift and Johnny Dangerously on VHS. I dont know where I would be in my movie life without you. Thanks for all the guidance. Love you.

    1. Hey Bryan…yep Michael Keaton movies were allowed in the house when you were growing up….I did not censor him ….so I am sure you were watching the Batman movies when you were only 5 or 6 years old. I like the Keaton/Burton movies…but I will take the Bale/Nolan Batman movies anyday of the week. I am glad you like your requested hub….sorry it took so long to get done…but better late than never. You are welcome for the guidance and you are loved as well….you are the man even if you are still a punk.

  4. Considering Adam West was famous for playing Batman in a comedy version of Batman, I don’t see what their problem was with Keaton. West was silly in an over the top way – including a big screen version. So the idea of Batman’s image being ruined by a comedic actor seems bizarrre as that ship had already sailed.

I saw the first Batman film hoping that Adam West or one of his costars would have a cameo. He didn’t. They didn’t. I decided not to bother with the sequels, even if they got good reviews (some have been panned, of course).

By the way, I knew that Keaton was actually Douglas. The movies/music business are full of people who were born with the same name as someone already famous. David Bowie goes by his middle name as a last name because Davy Jones of the Monkees was famous. And Stewart Granger’s real name was James Stewart.

    Top Ten lists:

Box Office: I have seen two: Batman and Beetlejuice

Critics: I have seen three. Besides the two already mentioned, I have seen Much ado About Nothing.

    Overall:

I have seen four of his films. The fourth movie is Jack Frost. Don’t ask me why. I imagine it was on a Christmas and others wanted to watch it. Beetlejuice is far superior.

I tried watching Mr. Mom and stopped. Not my type of movie – full of messes.

I have seen Cars, but that’s not on the list.

    1. Hey Flora…thanks for checking out my Michael Keaton hub… I never understand why so many people were so upset about Keaton getting the Batman role. I think an Adam West cameo would have been fun….though I do not think Tim Burton was interested in fun when it came to Batman….the Joker yes…Batman no.

Changing names in Hollywood used to be standard operating procedure…I do not think anybody does that now….unless they become a one word name like Sting and Cher.

Much Ado About Nothing did pretty well in the rankings…Keaton is very good in his role as the sheriff…a small but interesting part for him.

I actually gave Cars and Toy Story 3 there own little section. As always thanks for stopping by.

      1. Re: voice overs, yes I saw them mentioned. But I mean that they were not ranked. I notice I forgot to mention paltry percentages. Four films out of 29 ranked is 14%. Five films out of 31 (discussed) is 16%.

        1. Hey Flora….I think I came to a conclusion that I should separate voice overs from live action movies about 8 or 9 movie pages ago….now all I have to do is go back to my other 100 hubs and update those as well….it seems like I am constantly updating my hubs. Which will change lots of the rankings…especially somebody like Tom Hanks who currently has 4 voice overs in his Top 20.

      2. I think the voice over thing is a great idea Bruce. And its an idea for a future movie page, famous actors voicing animated movies. People might be surprised at some of the famous names doing voice overs. Scorsese and De Niro did one together, remember which one?

        1. That would be Shark Tale…with Will Smith….Scorsese plays the blowfish…and DeNiro plays the Godfather shark….I think I listen to that movie at least once a month in the car when I am driving my little ones around.

  5. Mr Mom!!! How fun!!! That was and still is a great movie. One Good Cop is also a favorite of mine. As is Beetlejuice and the Batman movies! Bryan made a nice pick…and your FB picks are still #1. Way to go B & B Rogers! I didn’t know his original name was Douglas, that was a smart move to use an alias. I wondered if him and Diane were related…I now have an answer. Thanks cogerson! Thumbs UP!

    1. Hey Sunshine625….I can associate with him in Mr. Mom…especially since I am now Mr. Mom. Glad to see my football picks are still sitting at number 1…maybe your son-in-law is getting nervous…lol.

During my research I saw that he called Diane Keaton once to thank her for the last name…but they had never had a chance to meet each other. Thanks for stopping by.

        1. Hey Sunshine625….then I am glad I have not disappointed you when you asked me to join your football league and possibly taked down your SIL in the rankings.
