Morgan Freeman Movies

Want to know the best Morgan Freeman movies?  How about the worst Morgan Freeman movies?  Curious about Morgan Freeman’s box office grosses or which Morgan Freeman movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Morgan Freeman movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which ones got the worst? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

Before doing this page, I would have told you the actor that I became first aware of as a kid ….. was John Wayne. Turns out the answer has to be Morgan Freeman. Freeman appeared on PBS’s The Electric Company from 1971 to 1977. I was in kindergarten in 1972, and The Electric Company was required viewing. I remember seeing Freeman in the trailer for 1980’s Brubaker, and telling my brother…”Hey its that guy from the Electric Company”….ok enough about me.

In 1987 Freeman played Fast Eddie, a very brutal pimp, in Smart Street. He received his first Oscar® and Golden Globe® nomination for that role, and his movie career has never looked back.  Since those early days, he has become one of the most respected actors working today.  His IMDb page shows over 130 acting credits since 1964. This page will rank Morgan Freeman movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, cameos and movies that were not released in theaters were not included in the rankings.  This page was from a request by Sunshine.

  • Sort Morgan Freeman movies by yearly domestic box office rank

  1. Morgan Freeman and Samuel L. Jackson, to me, at top of the line actors. My favorite Morgan Freeman without a doubt will always be Shawshank Redemption….just awesome. I still cry when I watch it.

    1. Hey stayingalivemoma…..thanks for the comments….I will have to do a Samuel L. Jackson hub one of these days….Shawshank is a great movie and one that I can view over and over….but I would say my favorite Freeman movie is either Unforgiven, Glory or The Dark Knight.

  2. Thank you, thank you for the Electric Company reference. Whenever I tell people that Morgan Freeman was “Easy Reader” from Electric Company and then try to describe him, all I get are patronizing smiles. No, seriously! He played a hippie reader on a kids’ show! I promise!

I find the comparing first two lists interesting. I realize the first list is adjusted for inflation, but sometimes box office gross doesn’t equal critical approval

    1. Hey FirstColony….thanks for the visit….I have always been fascinated that Freeman could so easily go from Easy Reader on Electric Company to the vicious pimp Fast Eddie from Street Smart…..back to the kindly/wise/older characters he does these days.

Glad you like the tables of information….I like the last one table the best because it combines all the factors in the success or failure of a movie.

  3. Morgan Freeman….couldn’t play a less than perfect role if he tried like heck! The man is one of the VERY best. His movies are all so fabulous, it’s very difficult to choose a favorite

BTW, Cogerson….Wonderful Interview. I read it a couple of times!!

    1. Hey fpherj48…thanks for checking out my Morgan Freeman hub and my interview…..both were fun doing…..as for Freeman it is nice to see if still so active after all these years…I bet his newest movie goes to number one this weekend….thanks for the comments.

  4. I suspected there was a Morgan Freeman page! Whoever requested a page for this excellent actor has exquisite taste! Just sayin 🙂

    1. I agree Sunshine625 the person does have great taste….it is kind of scary to think that 3 months have gone by that quickly. Thanks for coming back and making sure my Morgan Freeman hub still exists……lol.

          1. Yay an updated Morgan Freeman hub! I haven’t paid much attention to Dolphin Tales…I haven’t seen any trailers or tv commercials for it. The Shawshank Redemption still remains my favorite Morgan Freeman movie. Morgan is the man….so is cogerson, thank you for dusting off Mr Freeman!

          2. Hey Sunshine….thanks for rechecking out one of your earliest requests that you made of me…..Dolphin Tale is supposed to be excellent….a great movie for all in the family….and it is based on a true story.

  5. For anyone in Canada who loves Morgan Freeman-Bravo! is airing AFI’s Lifetime Achievement Award to him tomorrow night-Monday, July 4th-at 5pm Pacific.

I simply must say that I love Driving Miss Daisy and that this movie was the first I heard of Freeman. I recently saw RED for the great cast and I enjoyed it. I uunderstand from people who go to recent movies regularily that this was a retread of others, but since I don’t normally go out to new movies and I love the cast, I loved it.

    Regarding other movies:’

I’ve seen his narration of the penguin documentary-beautiful

I enjoyed The Shawshank Redemption and Unforgiven. Although Million Dollar Baby is hailed, I don’t think I could stand watching it. I’m not big on boxing films anyway, and this was also a bit heavy for me for where I was when the movie was released.

Oh and I’ve seen Brubaker. Not a favourite of mine, but I enjoyed it while I was watching it.

    1. Hey Flora…thanks for the update on the Freeman show….I was pleasantly surprised by Driving Miss Daisy, the cast is outstanding in that movie….even Dan Aykroyd. I also enjoyed Red….the cast member that came out the best in that movie was Karl Urban…in my opinion…..I looked him up after watching Red, and was stunned to realize that I had never noticed him before. Million Dollar baby is pretty intense, not too many boxing scenes….Freeman is good in his role but I think he has better roles that should have one him an Oscar instead of Million Dollar Baby….and finally I think Brubaker helped him break out of the Electric Company mold….as he went from playing a friendly guy teaching numbers…to an intense murderer in lockup…thanks for your comments
