Nelson Eddy (1901-1967) was an American singer and actor who appeared in many musical films during the 1930s and 1940s, as well as in opera and on the concert stage, radio, television, and in nightclubs. A classically trained baritone, he is best remembered for the eight films in which he costarred with soprano Jeanette MacDonald.

HI BRUCE If I recall correctly I pressed you for a Nelson Eddy page some time ago as I wanted to ensure that having done one on Jeanette you were’n’t accused of gender bias.
Certainly it did occur to me that if the boot had been on the other foot those politically correct “feminist” workmates of W o C might have been on your case!
Anyway I was interested on what you had to say about Nelson in his own right as although I knew that he had been in Phantom of the Opera and a flick called Northwest Outpost I didn’t know anything about his other movies outside the MacDonald/Eddy series.
I note from your table above that in fact the split between that series and Nelson’s other ones appears to be almost 50/50 and breakdown of the adjusted domestic domestic grosses is
8 MacDonald/Eddy films $1.36 billion average approx. $170 million
10 Nelson solo films $940 million average $94 million.
I was surprised to see that Nelson was in the Crawford/Gable Dancing Lady as that is never mentioned in anything I’ve seen before whereas Astaire’s debut role in it is regularly referred to, both Fred and Nelson playing themselves.
What an ultimately high-powered quartet in that one movie!– Crawford, Gable, Astaire and Nelson – the 3 men in particular being in the first flushes of their marvellous heyday as stars.
It always struck me as a bit of a coincidence that Jeanette and Nelson died relatively young in their early sixties within two years of each other aged 61 and 65 respectively.
A Dan like link between Nelson and one of my own singing idols [John McCormack] is that they both had fine recognition for singing I’m Falling in Love with Someone, Nelson performing it with Jeanette in their 1935 Naughty Marietta.
Thanks by the way for mentioning Rory’s recent birthday. I hadn’t known about that. Your Nelson new page is given my “Vote Up” W o C can tell her workmates that one of your “chauvinist” regulars had been pressing for it!
Hey Bob…..he had the difficult role of playing Nelson Eddy in the Dancing Lady. Pretty sure he is one of the singers/dancers that really did nothing to move the plot. Nice call back to Dan’s McCormack/Nelson link.
As for Rory’s birthday….when time is tight….re-posting an UMR page for a birthday person is always an option for our daily post….well that day…Rory popped up….and I thought of you and Flora.
Good feedback as always.
When looking at Joel’s Rating The Movie Stars book….Nelson Eddy is ranked in 401st place….the book ranked 410 stars. So of the legendary thespians Eddy topped? 402nd Jerry Lewis, 403rd Bela Lugosi, 404th Pat Boone, 405th Frankie Avalon, 406th Ali MacGraw, 407th Elvis Presley, 408th Jayne Mansfield, 409th Annette Funicello & Maria Montez 410th.
Nelson never appeared on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list.Hard to believe there are still 2 people on the 2016 Universe list who are;
245 MICKEY ROONEY Broadway to Hollywood (1933)
781 SHELLEY WINTERS Knickerbocker Holiday (1944)
There aren’t too many on the original list in 2000 who appeared with him in a film and Jeanette was never on the list;
50 JEFF COREY Bitter Sweet (1940)
102 DAVID NIVEN Rose-Marie (1936)
222 BESS FLOWERS Sweethearts (1938)
234 AKIM TAMIROFF Naughty Marietta (1935)

Hey Dan…..what? ….this can’t be…..these lists are too short…..there has to be a mistake…..lol. Like you I am surprised he even has two on the 2016 list….gotta think it might be down to 1 on the 2018 or none….not sure how Rooney is holding up. On the second list…good ole Bess makes an appearance….and the legend James Stewart. As for the final list…..11 Oscar winners is a pretty good ratio. As always your efforts are appreciated.
Bruce, I’ve only seen one film on that chart, can you guess what that is?
I’ll give you a clue – Claude Rains + mask.
I’m a fan of the old Hollywood musicals but not the operatic type, I like to see a bit of dancing in a musical and not just two people holding each other staring at the sky and trilling loudly. It’s hard on the ears. [cue shock horror and cries of blasphemy]
😉
Hey Steve……wow…..our tally is pretty sad……but if you take my 1….and your 1….and put them together….we are at 11 and we tie Flora’s 11……so pat ourselves on the back…lol. I want to see the Claude Rains + mask movie…..not thinking I am interested in any other of her movies. Joel Hirschhorn did not give his career much love…….no 4 star performances….and only 1 3 star performance….which is the movie you have seen…..thanks for checking out this blast from the past.
I only found out about this page’s existence by reading your comment in the forums in answer to Lorraine’s (?) post about 1936 Box Office Hits and her disappointment about Nelson Eddy not being listed in his role as a Canadian Mountie in Rose Marie and the Canadian Mounties in general. If you listed it at the top and on your new pages, you will get more comments.
I do enjoy Eddy’s films. I have seen 11 Nelson Eddy movies
In Order of Preference;
Rose Marie
Phantom of the Opera
The Chocolate Soldier
Maytime
Sweethearts
Naughty Marietta
Dancing Lady
Balalaika
Rosalie
Bitter Sweet
I Married An Angel
Hey Flora…..congrats on finding the August 1st page a day early. After reading her comment….I looked up Nelson in our database….and realized we had almost his entire career already done….so I put this together pretty quickly.
I have only seen 1 of his movies…Dancing Lady….and I will admit…I do not remember his part at all. One day I will see at least one of his Jeannette MacDonald movies. So your 11 destroys my total of 1.
I would like to see Phantom of the Opera…somehow that one has escaped me. As always…thanks for the feedback, tally and visit.
