Want to know the best Nicolas Cage movies? How about the worst Nicolas Cage movies? Curious about Nicolas Cage’s box office grosses or which Nicolas Cage movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Nicolas Cage movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.
When I first started writing movie pages, one of the first actors I picked (my oldest son’s suggestion) was Nicolas Cage. Nicolas Cage (1964-) has been starring in movies for over thirty-five years. During those years he has starred in many box office hits and has picked up two Best Actor Oscar® and four Golden Globe® nominations. He won the Best Actor Oscar® for his role in Leaving Las Vegas (1995). The last few years have seen most of his movies go straight to DVD…beginning to wonder if he will ever get back to his glory days.
His IMDb page shows over 100 acting credits since 1981. This page will rank Nicolas Cage movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts and cameos were not included in the rankings. His straight to home entertainment movies have a separate table that looks at 10 of his movies.
Nicolas Cage Movies Ranked In Chronological Order With Ultimate Movie Rankings Score (1 to 5 UMR Tickets) *Best combo of box office, reviews and awards.

Nicolas Cage Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table
The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.
- Sort Nicolas Cage movies by co-stars of his movies
- Sort Nicolas Cage movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
- Sort Nicolas Cage movies by adjusted worldwide box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions) *** If domestic & worldwide grosses are the same…then worldwide gross is unknown
- Sort Nicolas Cage movies how they were received by critics and audiences. 60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
- Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Nicolas Cage movie received.
- Sort Nicolas Cage movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score. UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

1 HI BRUCE This will be my last post to you for more than a week as tomorrow I’m off to Lanzarote for a holiday in the sun. I will of course keep an eye on the site via family laptops but will not be able to send any posts until I’m home again and able to play catch-up.
2 Meanwhile I can confirm that I enjoyed (1) your feedback to my two recent posts concerning Crowe/Ledger/Gibson/Brando etc (2) Your Nicolas Cage birthday page with lots of current stats about domestic and worldwide grosses and Nick’s straight-to video efforts. As you say Nick seems to be in steep decline but I suppose that comes to most of them if they can hang around long enough. Bogie, Gable etc went out at the top because they died relatively prematurely whereas Cary lived a long life but had the sense to get out while still on top.
3 The mini-series Feud about Davis/Crawford repeatedly emphasised how much they were relying on Baby Jane to put them back at the very top and checking out their stats on your Crawford/Davis pages I see that the Baby Jane flick was but a temporary pause in the decline of both actresses and that that decline seriously started when the 1950s ushered in.
4 For example- (1) between 1950 and 1970 Joan made 19 movies and they averaged just $59 million in adjusted domestic grosses according to your table (2) You list 26 films that Bette made between 1950 and 1989 which averaged merely $48 million approx.
5 I would again record my appreciation of how your site allows films buffs like me to make those kinds of comparisons.
Hey Bob
1. I hope you have a great well long holiday….sounds like fun.
2. Good point about actors overstaying their “top tier” stays….like you say Cary Grant and possibly Gene Hackman are one of the few that walked …..versus seeing the roles diminish like they have for Pacino, Willis, Cage and so many others.
3. Certainly Gable, Cooper and Bogart would have experienced that as well if they had made it to the 1970s…..then again Gable would have made a fine Captain Quint in Jaws.
4. Baby Jane was only a brief reprieve for Davis and Crawford.
5. Glad you are using our stats…it makes it all worth it.
1 Every now and again a story will appear in the press about the likes Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and especially Russell Crowe but rarely have I picked up gossip about Nicolas Cage and the only thing of note that I can remember about him outside his films is that he is Francis Coppola’s nephew. Indeed his real name is actually Nicolas Coppola but apparently he changed it to Cage in the hope of avoiding accusations of nepotism. A thing that always strikes me when I watch his movies is that to me his voice sounds a bit like that of James Stewart. He is apparently an avid fan of comic strips and according to Wikipedia he is currently up to his neck in litigation at the moment in relation to back taxes and other matters.
2 Whilst he has had 12 movies that crashed the adjusted $100 million barrier he has also had an enormous number of flops and indeed 55% of the 60 movies in the main table have an adjusted domestic gross of less than $50 million and some of them in fact make one wonder how ANY movie could manage to make so little money. His last big hit was The Croods 4 years ago in which he had just a voice role.
3 The worldwide grosses were interesting as Box Office Mojo does not give adjusted figures for other than domestic earnings and for the 39 movies for which Bruce has given global figures the ratio is 46.5% domestic/53.5% foreign. If that ratio was applied across all 60 films in Bruce’s table Cage’s overall worldwide gross would come out at just under $8.3 billion a global average of approx. $138 million.
4 The straight to HE chart was also noteworthy as it prompted Steve to compare Nicolas with Steven Seagal who it was reported recently was threatening to sue the US security agencies for ruining his career by associating him with undesirable elements in the American community.
Hey Bob
1. First of all…thanks for the visit and the comment.
2. Cage was in the news for his financial issues….seems he started taking any role…which might have helped out in the financial side …but seems like it killed his movie career,
3. I have always respected that about Cage….not using the Coppola name and becoming famous on his own
4. Over the years he has appeared in numerous Coppola kin directed movies….sometimes the results have been good …..other times they have been brutal (Deadfall).
5. Mmmm….I will have to pay attention to his voice…and see if I can hear the Stewart in it.
6. I agree….his flops far outweigh his hits…..as for how they made so little money?….the world of VOD (Video on Demand)……seems having a movie play in a few theaters adds value to the movie….so the producers can claim….”rent our theaterical release”….that is the case with Trespass, Stolen and Seeking Justice.
7. Trespass is the movie that made me realize his career was in trouble….a movie co-starring Nicole went to VOD route…earned $24,000 in theaters and quickly went away.
8. I figured with HE movies becoming more and more….it was time to start including them in the page…..granted it will only be critic/audience….but he has been making these movies…and I have been sadly watching these movies.
9. I am beginning to wonder if there is a place that lists VOD grosses….because it seems that would be a way to include these movies in the main table.
10 The list of stars joining Seagal and Cage in HE territory include….Willis (sad to say), Travolta (his last 4 movies have been VOD) Christian Slater (he has spent the last decade making dozens of HE movies) and lots of other 1980s action stars….so I think Seagal’s issue is not with the government….but more with 30 years of time passing.
🙂
1 Thanks for the detailed additional info
2 Agree with you about Seagal attempting to make the security agencies the scapegoat for a fading career – maybe he has the same agent as Sandra Bullock!
3 Coincidentally after I read your HE list on Cage’s page I watched an interview with Jack Lemmon made about 30 years ago in London and he laughingly referred to some flop of his that I’ve never heard of and which “went straight to the 50 cents houses and lasted there only 2 days!”
4 Incidentally towards the end of the interview they let him talk by link direct to Matthau back in the States and it was clear from the banter between them that those two guys really hit it off and were exceptionally fond of each other.
Hey Bob…..funny point about Seagal and Bullock. Yep before HE…there we movies at the bottom of the double bill….and the 50 cent houses. Good to know that Lemmon and Matthau were good friends on screen and off screen.
In Kevin Pollack’s excellent book (and highly recommended) How I Slept My Way to the Middle….he talks about his experiences with Lemmon and Matthau while making the Grumpy Old Men movies….at one point the two legends shared a house while filming…and Pollack said every night was like a great party….with Lemmon playing the piano and Matthau telling great stories…..there is a great one about Astaire and a X-Rated calling of a horse race….funny stuff.
🙂
What’s happened to Nic Cage? What’s all this direct to video rubbish? Steven Seagal must be laughing his head off.
Kick-Ass was the last good film I’ve seen him in.
Hey Steve…his fall from grace has been hard. I used to think he would bounce back. But other than the new Croods movie or a third National Treasure movie….I see either small supporting roles in movies like Snowden….or lead roles in small budget bad movies. I agree his last good movie was Kick-Ass. I actually watched The Trust last night…it had a few nice moments….but by the end it fizzled away. I think Seagal is trying to figure out a way to make a “massive” 5 million budget Cage/Seagal movie….it would be huge on VOD. Thanks for checking out our Cage update.
Mr. Cage is one of my favorites.
Hey Lisandra….he had a very good run. I hope he can bounce back.
As much as I like Nicolas Cage, even I have to admit he has been in some… ummm… not so great movies. In my opinion, The Wicker Man was the worst and Raising Arizona was his best. Nobody plays a sweet, southern ex-convict baby snatcher better than Nick Cage! 🙂
Thanks for the comment rjbatty….sorry it took so long to respond back. Glad to see someone else likes Red Rock West…easily one of his really good movies that has been forgotten in time. I also agree with you about Leaving Las Vegas….but not a movie that you want to watch again. And finally I have had a crush on Elisabeth Shue since her teenage days(I was a teenager too)…and agree she deserved an Oscar as well.
