Norman Lloyd Movies

Norman Lloyd (1914-2021) was an American actor, producer and director with a career in entertainment spanning nine decades. He has worked in every major facet of the industry including radio, theater, television and film dating back to the Great Depression, and at 103 years of age is the oldest working Hollywood actor.   He current has a role on the television series The Fly.  His IMDb page shows 69 acting credits since 1939.   This page ranks 29 Norman Lloyd movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, bit parts and his movies not released in North America theaters are not included in the rankings.

Drivel part of the page:  So why a Norman Lloyd page?  He is hardly a household name and even in his “prime” he was “just” a top notch “supporting” player.  Well….we were thinking of doing a list of the oldest living UMR subjects.   Olivia de Havilland (age 102) and Kirk Douglas (101) would have topped that list.  So as we were thinking of older thespians…Norman Lloyd popped into our minds even though he did not have an UMR page.   The more we thought of Lloyd’s longevity the more we thought he needed a page.  He was in, not one, but two Alfred Hitchcock movies (major cool points here).  His career started in 1939…and 79 years later he is still acting.  If he can act another 16 months he would be the first (?) actor to have an IMBd credit in TEN different decades.   We found these pieces of trivia interesting….and now you know why Norman Lloyd jumped everybody in the UMR request line and got an UMR page.

  • Sort Norman Lloyd movies by yearly domestic box office rank

    1. Hey Flora…..when he was 76 he was still a young pup…he made it to 106 before he passed away. Sad sad news.

  1. I have seen 14 Norman Lloyd movies. I thought that my total would be higher. He is a favourite of mine. However, as you stated, Bruce, bit parts were not included and I have seen a lot of films where his role was smaller.

When I saw Norman’s name at the top of your page, I thought that he had died. I am glad that he is still with us.

The HIGHEST rated film I have seen is Dead Poet’s Society.

The highest rated film I have NOT seen is The Flame and the Arrow.

The LOWEST rated film I have seen is The Light Touch.

Regarding the remake of M: I have seen both versions and although both have their merits I much prefer the original.

    Favourite Norman Lloyd movies:

    Saboteur
    He Ran All the Way
    A Walk in the Sun
    Spellbound
    Limelight
    A Letter For Evie
    The Green Years
    The Southerner

No matter what I may think of the overall movie, I always enjoy Norman Lloyd’s performance.

    1. Hey Flora….glad to tell you that he is alive and well….and still working. He turns 104 in a couple of months. Your 14 is the high water mark so far. Not thinking he is going to be a good view getter….but I am glad I did the page. Of your favorites…I have seen 3 of them…with Limelight being my favorite. Of the two Hitch movies…give me Saboteur everytime. Good mini-reviews of M….I will have to check out the Lloyd/Wayne version. Good feedback as always.

  2. Hi Bruce, I remember Norman Lloyd best as the saboteur in Hitchcock’s Saboteur. I think his was the only character in movie history to fall to his death from the Statue of Liberty, can you think of any others?

I’ve seen just 5 of the 29 films on the chart, I expected more. Favorites are – Saboteur, Spellbound and The Flame and the Arrow. The other two are Dead Poets Society and Audrey Rose.

Good work as always. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve….Saboteur was Lloyd’s first credited acting role….what a nice way to start a career. Hmmm…is he the only person to fall off the Statue of Liberty…thinking…..did anybody fall of the statue in Remo Williams? I know they had a huge action scene on the Statue. I will have to re-watch that failed superspy franchise. I have seen 8 of his movies. I like Saboteur but Spellbound is one of my least favorite Hitch movies. Dead Poets Society is a good movie but not one I rush to re-watch. Thanks for the visit and the votes up.

      1. Hi Bruce, forgot about Remo, it’s an 80s favorite of mine, I have it on DVD.

There was a big action sequence on the scaffolding surrounding the Statue of Liberty (it was undergoing a restoration at the time the film was made). So they weren’t technically on the statue, and I don’t think Remo killed any of the baddies, he knocked them out and one was tied to a rope when he fell off a scaffolding. I’ve watched the film a bunch of times over the years. 🙂

  3. Did you know on Wheel of Fortune last week Vanna White wished her aunt happy birthday. Her aunt is the oldest person in South Carolina and # 11 in the U.S. ( who keeps track of these things). Vanna’s aunt turned 112 and the 50 oldest people in the U.S. are listed on Wikipedia and Vanna’s aunt is there at 11.

      1. Hey Dan…..more good trivia….I actually was not even aware that they had remade M until checking out Lloyd’s movies. David Wayne got the Peter Lorre part. For some reason David Wayne fascinates me….I became aware of him on the television show….House Calls….and until doing these classic pages, never realized that he had such a long movie career. I now view him as a poor man’s Burgess Meredith. Good feedback as always.

    1. Hey Dan….good trivia….that would be a great list to be on…especially if one’s health was good. Ah….the power of Wikipedia……I will have to check out that list….and hopefully make that list….lol. Good stuff.
