  1. Thanks for sharing all these movies and their box office statistics. I look forward to when they are on a completed UMR page and on the yearly reviews.

  2. HI BRUCE Given that information about grosses way back in the 1920s is bound to be patchy at best it was a good idea to provide us with a comprehensive list of those 1920s stats that are to hand at the moment – much appreciated.

It will obviously take me to study the list several time to get full value from it but a first reading already provides data that is of much interest to me personally. For example I have now grosses for 5 of the 8 Doug Fairbanks movies that historians regard as his great classic swashbucklers/adventure flicks that displayed his marvellous athletic abilities.

For others on this site who are not completely besotted with Willis, Joel and Miss Loy and might be interested in Doug as well here they are complete with your adjusted domestic grosses slightly rounded-

    1924/Thief of Bagdad-$215 million
    1922/Robin Hood-$181 million
    1926/The Black Pirate—$141 million
    1927/The Gaucho-$136 million
1929/The Iron Mask-$122 million [from your 1929 page]
GRAND TOTAL – $795 million, average around $160 million

    1925/Ben Hur-$580 million
NEW GRAND TOTAL $1.375 billion, average approx $230 million

Excellent box office record for those movies , don’t you agree? Actually long before Tracy gave Gable the accolade [albeit maybe sarcastically as we’ve discussed] Doug was dubbed The King of Hollywood. His wife Little Mary was of course America’s Sweetheart, or Bank of America’s Sweetheart as Chaplin sarcastically re-nicknamed her. Charlie detested her for being unsporting enough to thwart some of his efforts to stalk under-ageed girls the high society parties she and Doug threw at Pickfair, their mansion.

Doug had an uncredited guest cameo in the chariot scene in Ben Hur so you will see that I did a “Cogerson” and gave him credit for it anyway! Actually another point of considerable interest to me was your provision of the grosses for the silent Ben Hur and 10 Commandments as I found it useful to compare them with Chuck Heston’s later offering of those two filcks-

    10 Commandments – $655 million 1923/$1.18 billion 1956
    Ben Hur – $580 million 1925/.$0.880 billion 1959
GRAND TOTAL 2 SILENT FILMS $1.24 billion
COMBINED GROSS FOR 2 HESTON FILMS $2.06 billion

This page combined with your 1929 one gives us a strong flavor of the US movie marketplace all those years ago in the last decade of silent movies/first [partial] year of the talkies. “Vote Up” +++

    1. Hey Dan…deleted them from this list…now I just need to fix it in the database. Good eye as always. As for where I found this information….lots and lots of research. The MGM, Warner Brothers and RKO ledgers. Some great books that list rental numbers….I was actually at a college library today and revisiting those books. Variety has lots of articles that look at the grosses of the 1920s….so many movies that have no box office information. I know my Warner Brothers ledgers have lots of 1928 movies that have never been added to the database….I will do that when I do the 1928 page. Once again….good eye…and good feedback.

      1. Glad to help Anonymous…..one day I will get all of these movies on a full UMR table with all the stats.

  3. Getting lots of views on our Yearly Reports….some comments have asked about our pre 1929 movies….well….here they are.
