  1. Thanks for sharing these lists. Looking at the list for top stars of 1950-1969, I’m happy to see a lot of my favourites make the list – Gregory Peck, Jimmy Stewart, Frank Sinatra, William Holden, Dean Martin, Burt Lancaster, Doris Day, Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor.

Looking forward to the Dudley Moore page.

    1. Hey Flora…Gregie, Jimmy, Frankie, Billy, Dino, Burtie, Dory, Paulie, and Lizzie had a great run for those two decades. Glad you liked that two decade list. Dudley is up….and he brought Burgess with him….lol. They were co-stars in Foul Play and Santa Clause:The Movie…and now they are UMR co-stars on October 28th 2018. So far Burgess is getting more views….I think I thought it would be the other way around. Good feedback as always.

  2. Good to see John Wayne at the top of that list Bruce and Charlton Heston did well too. Not sure why Dean Martin came close to being the top box office attraction from 1950-1969.

Doris Day bigger than Liz Taylor, interesting. If Liz could sing and dance she would have been at the top of that list. [wink]

No I’m not a big fan of either of those two. Marilyn Monroe yes. I know as a Brit I should be singing Liz’s praises but I found Marilyn a lot more watchable. Liz was beautiful and could act, her only weakness was her voice which was too thin and fragile.

    1. Hey Steve….thanks for checking out our latest lists…I forgot to add the Top 25 and the Promising New Stars into the 1982 page….only when I was cleaning off my desk…did I see the book…..and thought…”damn…I forgot to add those lists”. They are now on that yearly review.

As for Dean Martin so high? If you think about it…it is not surprising at all. In the 1950s….the Lewis and Martin movies were money making machines….and they were very productive…making 16 movies in 6 or 7 years….and they were all box office hits. Then he started hanging out with Frank Sinatra in the 1960s…and their Rat Pack movies were money winners too…..then add in the Dino “stand alone” movies….and you still get some winners….the Matt Helm trilogy was going strong…until the 3rd one sunk the franchise. So for almost the entire 20 years Dino was making one hit movie after another.

To me the big surprise was Tony Curtis coming in at #5…..I did not realize he was that successful. As for Doris vs Liz….yep Doris barely topped her….and you are right…if Taylor had made some musicals she might have topped Day. Here the big surprise is Deborah Kerr….box office success….and picked up 5 or 6 Oscar nominations during this time period too.

Lots of UMR favorites did well on this mini-list…Wayne at #1, Chuck at #2, Burt at #10 (he is one of Phil’s favorites), Day at #11 and Peck at #13. Good feedback.

  3. I bought the John Willis 1982 Screen World book just for our upcoming 1982 UMR page…then I wrote the page…and forgot to add these two lists…which I find very interesting.

Bo Derek, Brook Shields, Dolly Parton and Cheech and Chong did not have long tenures in the Top Stars lists.
