She was Errol Flynn’s favorite leading lady…..they made 9 movies together.  She is one of only thirteen actresses to win more than one Best Actress Oscar®.  She was one of the most popular actresses in the 1930s and 1940s.  She is the oldest living acting Oscar® winner….she took over that spot when Luis Rainier passed away last year.  She was in my book, the best ever Maid Marian to ever appear on movie screens….1938’s The Adventures of Robin Hood. Shebwas one of the last surviving cast members of 1939’s Gone With The Wind. She was in the best killer bee movie ever made….ok….maybe The Swarm was not a career highlight for her. She was nominated for an Oscar® 5 times in her career.

That is one impressive resume for the latest Ultimate Movie Rankings page subject…..Olivia de Havilland.  Olivia de Havilland (1916-2000) had 59 acting credits from 1935-1988.  In the table below Ultimate Movie Rankings ranks 48 of her movies in 6 different sortable columns. Movies made for television, television appearances and cameos were not included in the rankings.

  1. De Havailland was not only beautiful but she was a great actress. After Gone with the Wind, she wanted more than to be just a leading lady to Errol Flynn. The problem in Warner Bros is that it was overrun by talented leading ladies. Most plum roles went to Davis, Barbara Stanwick was coming back and forth and of course Crawford arriving in the early 40s. Jane Wyman also waiting in the wings.
But she proved her mettle by taking Warner Bros to court and winning and going on to win 2 Oscars. Though my favourite movie is the Snake Pit.
It’s interesting that she was considered for Street Car, I couldn’t imagine anyone but Vivien Leigh in that role.
I find it incredible that she wasn’t mentioned in the list of the great ladies, the problem with these lists are that somebody is going to be left out.

    1. @Chris….Good points….she hurt fight and ultimate win over Warner Brothers was legendary. Snake Pit is a good one. It is amazing how mental health care has changed since then. Not sure how she got bumped off the AFI list….I love Lauren Bacall….but her career is nothing compared to Olivia’s….and that is just one that comes into my mind…..sorry it took so long to respond to your comment.

    1. Frank is complete and published…he is currently at CogersonMovieScore.com….but he will be moved to this page in the near future.

  2. You’ve done a great job here on the following film
star pages, Doris Day, Olivia De Havilland, Cary
Grant, Charlton Heston, Dean Martin, Steve McQueen,
Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and John Wayne by
showing the films actual grosses as well as inflated grosses. I had been trying for a long time
to find out grosses as well as rentals for 1961’s
The Comancheros. And thanks to you I have some idea.

    1. @Lyle….glad to see you have liked some of my classic pages. As for The Comancheros….that was a tricky one to find. It was released in October 1961…so it did not make the Variety end of year report on January 10, 1962 (too soon) or the Variety end of year report on January 9th 1963. I got my box office figure from numerous Wayne books….they report the gross as 7 million….which translates to about 3.17 million in box office rentals. That would have put Comancheros in 30th place in 1961 and about 28th place in 1962. Thanks for the nice words and compliments…they are both greatly appreciated.

  3. I have been reading this for what seems like hours. I have seen almost all of these movies. I have seen every one of known movies but I have to admit there are more than a few Olivia movies that I was not even aware of. My biggest suprise is to see Not As A Stranger so highly ranked. Despite having many stars that is not a good movie. On the other end of things I have to say that seeing The Proud Rebel so low is also surprising. I have always thought that the Alan Ladd Olivia team was awesome. Overall I really enjoyed this page and I am very thankful you put it together. Job well done my friend. Tom.

    1. @TM3401/Tom. I am glad to read that you like “your page” so much. I have not seen Not As A Stranger yet…but it has become a movie that I want to watch…I have noticed that it has a pretty low critic/audience score. I guess all those big names brought people to theaters….they just did not like the movie. As for Proud Rebel….another one that I want to see. I think by the time Ladd and Olivia made this movie…their peak years were behind them…sorry you movie did not rank very high. Thanks again for a nice request.

    1. Frank is coming soon. He got bumped out of the way by DeHavilland…and now Kendricks…..but he is back in line and getting ready to go.
