She was Errol Flynn’s favorite leading lady…..they made 9 movies together.  She is one of only thirteen actresses to win more than one Best Actress Oscar®.  She was one of the most popular actresses in the 1930s and 1940s.  She is the oldest living acting Oscar® winner….she took over that spot when Luis Rainier passed away last year.  She was in my book, the best ever Maid Marian to ever appear on movie screens….1938’s The Adventures of Robin Hood. Shebwas one of the last surviving cast members of 1939’s Gone With The Wind. She was in the best killer bee movie ever made….ok….maybe The Swarm was not a career highlight for her. She was nominated for an Oscar® 5 times in her career.

That is one impressive resume for the latest Ultimate Movie Rankings page subject…..Olivia de Havilland.  Olivia de Havilland (1916-2000) had 59 acting credits from 1935-1988.  In the table below Ultimate Movie Rankings ranks 48 of her movies in 6 different sortable columns. Movies made for television, television appearances and cameos were not included in the rankings.

  1. Wow 100! Great that she is still around. Gone With The Wind was 77 years ago. And she is still here. Gable has been gone almost 60 years. Howard has been gone almost 75 years. Leigh over 50 years. And she is still standing A truly wonderful day. Happy Birthday Ms. Olivia de Havilland.

    1. Hey Helakoski…..she said at the 60th anniversary party for Gone With The Wind that she wanted to be around for the 70th and 80th parties….well she made the 70th….and the 80th is only 3 years away….hoping she makes it. A connection to a movie past look since gone. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

    1. Yes indeed Happy 100th Birthday to her…..next up is Kirk Douglas who will be 100 on December 9th…..I like that they are still around. Thanks for checking out our Olivia page on her birthday.

  2. Hey Flora….this was one of the first pages I wrote for this new website….and wow even though this website is less than 3 months old….I need to go back and update this page. It screams for a co-star column…..so you can pull out all of the Errol Flynn/de Havilland movies. I will do that update as soon as I finish “flipping” from my old website to my new website.

The first time I saw Gone With The Wind….I did not like it all….and was bored out of mind….as could not believe how long the movie was….over the years I have seen and enjoyed it with each additional viewing…..unlike Vivien Leigh’s other classic…A Streetcar Named Desire…which I strongly dislike and seems to get worse with each new viewing.

The Snake Pit is not a fun movie to watch. Once was enough for me…I will never revisit that movie ever again…..although she is outstanding in the movie. So your tally is 20….Steve is at 12 and I am at 13…..wow 2nd place for me in a classic category….it is a proud day for me.

Of your Top 5 I have not seen Raffles or The Male Animal….I will have to check those out in the future. I am not too familiar with The Proud Rebel….the de Havilland movie that has reached the top of my “must watch list”…is Not As A Stranger. I am trying to figure out how a blockbuster hit…with Frank Sinatra, Robert Mitchum, Olivia de Havilland and Lee Marvin has pretty much been forgotten.

Thanks as always for your input….when I wrote my Tyrone Power page I was shocked how well almost all of his movies did at the box office….he was a money making machine when it came to selling movie tickets.

  3. Hi, Bruce.

I thought I would do another actress next from your list of older names you listed.

Regarding Olivia’s films with Errol Flynn, I have seen all but one: I am missing is Four’s A Crowd. The Adventures of Robin Hood is my favourite of their pairings.

Gone With the Wind I first saw back in the days when you had to watch two VHS pan and scan videos to see it. I watched it because Gable’s my favourite actor with the same birthday and I’ve lost track of the number of times I have seen it.

I have tried to watch The Snake Pit several times, but I keep stopping in the middle of it because I find the subject bothersome.

Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte I saw for the cast as well as the title song, but I barely got through it.

I have seen 7 of her top 10 films, 10 of her top 15, 12 of her top 20, 15 of her top 30, and 20 of her films overall.

I have not seen The Swarm with RW and likely won’t.

The lowest on the list I have seen is Libel at 41.

Besides GWTW and Robin Hood/other Error Flynn titles, I have seen Raffles and The Male Animal multiple times.
I guess my top 5 of hers would put Robin Hood over GWTW because it is more fun to watch:

    The Adventures of Robin Hood
    Gone With the Wind
    Raffles
    The Heiress
    The Male Animal

The most recent film of hers I saw for the first time was The Proud Rebel. I cannot decide waht I think of it. The performances were good, but ultimately their characters were the opposite of Peck and Simmons in The Big Country in terns of water sharing and animals. Sigh.

I still haven’t had time to watch The Last of Sheila.

I’ll focus on Tyrone Power next. I’ll get to him in a few days.

    Cheers

    Flora
