Hi, Bruce.
I have seen 17 of Paul’s movies.
My favourites are:
Now Voyager
Casablanca
Between Two Worlds
Goodbye Mr. Chips
Devotion
Hey Flora….well your 17 destroys me and Steve’s combined total of 10. Between Two Worlds is a movie that I want to see…..as I find the story pretty interesting…..but so far I have not come across it anywhere….Devotion is the another I have not seen…but I liked the other 3 Top 5 very much…thanks for the feedback.
Hi
I think I have to agree with Bob, Paul Henreid was a nearly man. For a brief couple of years, he had the potential to become one of the great romantic leads and then suddenly as if over night, his fame vanished.
One of his best roles was in Deception with Davis. I often wondered why Warner Bros didn’t put him with Crawford or Stanwyck. It would have been interesting. Although he went on to be a successful T.V. director, it’s hard to understand why he didn’t really hit the big time.
Anyway, he’ll always be remembered for Casablanca and Now Voyager. Thanks for the page.
Hey Chris…thanks for sharing your movie thoughts on Paul Henreid. I think some of the reasons for his drop was his “blacklist” issues….sadly that was something he had to deal with on a regular issues…and in 3 countries. His 1942 was very very impressive….with Casablanca and Now Voyager being all time classics. As you wrote…seems Warners lost some good chances for great movies…when Henreid was walking around their studios. Thanks for the visit and the comment.
HI BRUCE
1 In terms of Hollywood successPaul Henreid has always seemed to me a “nearly man” a tag often given to someone who demonstrated potential for great stardom but fell just short .
2 As you have illustrated in your table following Casablanca Paul was the leading co-star of Ida Lupino, Hedy Lamarr, Bette Davis, Maureen O’Hara, Olivia De Havilland and Katie Hepburn in some of the high quality films of the day but, although he had some subsequent success in other fields of the entertainment industry, his movie star career quickly descended into B movies such as Mantrap and Pirates of Tripoli and then supporting roles like Dino’s Ten Thousand Bedrooms and Sinatra’s Never so Few. However Paul spoke out publicly against the UnAmerican Activities Committee and such a stance in the Hollywood of Paul’s time was not exactly a career enhancer.
3 Nonetheless as I have mentioned previously one of the big appeals to me of this site is that it does not concern itself with just the most popular icons of the cinema but also profiles actors who although they never set the box office alight with a run of stand-alone hits did make solid contributions to moviemaking that deserve respect, and this new page extends that respect to Paul Henreid who in private life was such a staunch opponent of Nazis in the 2nd world war that he was officially listed as an “enemy of the 3rd Reich” Accordingly never was an actor more suited to the role of Victor Laszio. Great new page.

I like swashbucklers and he starred in 4, Spanish Main and #’s 32 to 34, all of those I’ve seen.
Hey Dan….thanks for the sets of information. List 1….well I guess it is good to know that Exorcist 2 was good for something…..as it kept Henreid associated with the current list. 4 stars from that movie. List 2….tons of famous names in this list…..and even a Bess Flowers to boot. Looks like his B budget directed movies did not get many lasting actors and actresses. List 3….23 is a pretty good total…especially with him getting blacklisted. His swashbucklers really surprised me….as I did not know he made any…much less 4. Spanish Main was a monster hit….so I guess that helped the other 3 get made. As always…greatly appreciate your feedback.
31 is a swashbuckler also.
Hey Dan….I agree…thanks for the feedback.
I’m shocked, shocked that Casablanca came out as his number one movie.
On Now Voyager–okay as a curdled, sour, misanthropic old geezer, I’m not the target audience, but this one eludes me. What really bothered me watching it was the intrusive musical score which blared in with almost every line of dialogue to let me know how I should feel at this point in the story.
Hey John. I was shocked too. I have never even heard of this Casablanca ….lol. Now, Voyager is a cult classic…..but I agree about the music….it takes away from a great Bette Davis performance.
