Paul Newman Movies

Want to know the best Paul Newman movies?  How about the worst Paul Newman movies?  Curious about Paul Newman’s box office grosses or which Paul Newman movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Paul Newman movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

One of the few things I remember from my college days was this little lesson……one of my professors was explaining Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs pyramid and how self-actualization is the highest level a person can reach. The example he gave off a person that had reached the top of the pyramid was Paul Newman (1925-2008). During Newman’s very successful 52 year movie career, he received nine Oscar® nominations for acting……winning for The Color of Money. He also received two honorary Oscars® in 1986 and 1994. His 56 movies averaged almost 100 million in adjusted for inflation dollars at the box office per movie, while earning 98 Oscar® nominations.

I however believe he will ultimately be remembered for what he gave back to society. He started Newman’s Own in 1982 with all profits being donated, after taxes, to various charitable organizations. To date they have donated nearly 300 million dollars. Newman also started the Hole in the Wall summer camp program. The camp serves nearly 15,000 seriously ill children every year, free of charge. Newman arranged for the continuation of the distribution of Newman’s Own profits to charity after Newman’s death through the establishment of the Newman’s Own Foundation.

Ok….so let’s starting talking about movies. Paul Newman is one of my favorite actors. My favorite movie of all-time is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Other Newman movies that I think are classics would include: The Sting, Cool Hand Luke, The Verdict, Nobody’s Fool, Slap Shot and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Paul Newman passed away in September 2008. He is missed by movie fans all around the world.

His IMDb page shows 82 acting and 6 directing credits from 1949-2006. This page will rank Paul Newman movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, shorts, cameos and movies that were not released in theaters were not included in the rankings.

  1. I remember Maslow’s pyramid, and Newman probably is someone who reached the top. Great Willis find on the video, he looks very young. My favorite Newman movie is Slap Shot, a great comedy all it needed was Redford to make it complete.

    1. hey hinton1966…Slap Shot is a very funny movie…..I think you are the first one to mention it ……on all sports-movie lists this movie makes it…..too bad Redford, Newman and the director never made a third movie together….thanks for reading the movie page

  2. Excellent movie page. I always loved Paul Newman. He portrayed so amny different characters over the years. I was a amazed to see when he was on a chat show how shy he was.

    1. Thanks for the compliment ethel smith….his career was one great movie after another with lots of different characters….my 4 year old loves Cars….so his voice in that movie is heard in my house nearly everyday…..hard to believe he would be shy….thanks for stopping by

  3. Speaking of Willis, what no movie page? Or did I miss that too? 🙂

Another Newman film I saw at the cinema back in the 70’s and enjoyed was Slap Shot. I should watch it again it’s been ages, maybe not as funny now as I remember it.

    1. Yes Steve…you have missed that one as well….lol….Bruce Willis was the very first movie page I ever did…..I think it has had two facelifts….and it is closing in on 2000 hits so far…although traffic has slowed greatly…..so at the time Bruce was the #1 actor on the list….he has since fallen quickly down the charts….his score gets killed because he has made so many movies….and some were pretty bad movies.

  4. Paul Newman was a great actor. My husband and I thought he should have won the oscar for The Verdict as he played that role so well. He has made so many great movies and Torn Curtain with Julie Andrews was good. I agree that his charity work is just wonderful – giving back – many stars donate time and money which is a very good thing. Plus knowing that his charity work continues even though he is gone – GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN. THANKS FOR A GREAT MOVIE PAGE…Yeah, married a long time – JUST LIKE ME…

    1. Hey Bern1960….he was good in The Verdict…that damn Sir Ben Kingsley taking Newman’s glory…the sad part part about that loss….after being there in person and losing again…he vowed to never appear again when nominated….so when he finally won….he was not there to give his acceptance speech….yes his second marriage was very successful and especially when you realize it was a Hollywood marriage…those marriages do not last very long….thanks for the comments.

  5. Great movie page Cogerson. Paul Newman has many classic movies but my favorites are The Secret War of Harry Figg and Fort Apache The Bronx, along with the other classics everybody is mentioning. As for the Bruce Willis video, freaking hilarious, it is amazing how he stands out, it actually looks like a joke or trick editing to insert him in the frame. Same goes for Jigsaw.

    1. Hey Shaun….I saw Fort Apache The Bronx at the theater, I liked it but my parents said they would never take me to another R rated movie. As for The Secret War of Harry Figg….I have seen but have no solid memories of the movie…I will have to watch again…..I agree the Bruce Willis video almost does look fake…but it is one of Willis’s first movie credits..thanks for stopping by
