    1. Hey Mark….I used the box office rental number that Variety posted….and our formula changes that to a box office gross….then that number gets inflated. Box office mojo only uses the rental number (at least they used to…since they started charging for that info I do not go there anymore)…which does not give a movie the proper credit.

  1. I may have mentioned before that 1980 was a rather depressing year for me as a movie buff as most of my classic era idols had either passed on or were no longer major players in terms of stardom. The Duke had sadly died just the year before and [with something approaching $15 million dollars – around $55 million in today’s money- in the bank from Apocalypse Now and a virtual walk-on part in The Formula ] – Brando could afford to temporarily retire and was not seen again on screen until 1989 but when he came back he was not really the Brando of old.

Surprisingly the only one of my old idols to buck that trend was Sir Maurice who had debuted in an uncredited role way back in 1950 in a little know British film called Morning Departure [aka Operation Disaster] starring Brit greats Sir John Mills and Sir Richard Attenborough then in their own heyday and in which Sir M played literally a teaboy.

Indeed it seems to me that Sir Maurice began his most productive period in 1980 with movies like Dressed to Kill and later Educating Rita and Hannah and Her Sisters. IMDB lists an enormous number of acting awards and nomination for him across the board in the post 1979 period and his sterling work over the decades has earned him a high 14th ranking spot in IMDB’s “Ultimate” list of the 100 greatest movie actors of all time and of course he is ranked 17th in your own 25 Greatest Male Legends 1950-2010 list . Amazingly Sir Maurice is one of the very few actors in that list to have been about for the entirety of the1950-2010 period and if he soldiers on for 2 more years will have been on our movie screens for a staggering 70 years – beat that for longevity if you can Jason Statham and Rock Johnson!

Actually his Dressed to Kill and Inside Moves starring John Savage [whatever happened to him?] are my own two fave movies from 1980, otherwise my morbidity about the passing/fading of most of my great classic era idols must have disillusioned me a bit with the cinema because I have seen just 50% of the Top 10 best reviewed films in your chart – Empire Strikes Back, Superman 2, Raging Bull, The Elephant Man and The Shining.

However this page is another fine annual survey, which illuminates comprehensively the movie marketplace of 1980 so “Vote Up, plus”. I see you are now dipping back into the “dark ages” of the pre 1930 era but my comments on that are for another day.

    1. Hey Bob….I can imagine the passing of a legend like John Wayne could put a damper on your enthusiasm for movies. As for Caine…..the late 1970s were his “All in days” of Hollywood. He and his wife had moved to Los Angeles…and he accepted everything….he jokes it was because it was so expensive to live in L.A. But he made some major cluckers in the second half of the 1970s….Beyond the Posideon Adventure, The Swarm, The Island and Silver Bears. You are right….his 1980s were much better….making his personal favorite movie (Educating Rita) and getting his first Oscar (Hannah and Her Sisters).

John Savage is still an active actor….just the projects are far from his glory days of The Deer Hunter. I saw Inside Moves years ago….as a teenager I was not too impressed….I will have to check that one out again. Thanks for the kind words about this page.

  2. Hello Bruce , 1980 is one of my favorite movie year ; the empire strikes back is absolutely amazing one of the best star wars films ! I just prefer Return of the Jedi.
I’m also a big fan of Superman ii ; the only good Superman movie with the first one according to me …The screenplays were written by Mario Puzo who also wrote the Godfather !!
Flash Gordon is a pure delight … Very cool movie ! Comic book artist Alex Ross named the film one of his favorites .
Shining is an absolute masterpiece too… Even Friday the 13 is a landmark for slasher movies …
I’m also a fan of dressed to kill …Probably the funniest MIchael Caine movie !!

As you said before ; the good thing is that with the 1980 yearly review you’re catching up with box office mojo…
But please…. I hope you’ll do it… I’m dying to see (and probably not the only one) special pages for the 1940’s the 1950’s ; 1960’s ; 1970’s and 1980’s with all the worldwide box office grosses (including re- relases) figures you have collected in your database…… Can we expect such pages like that in the near future ?? ….

Thanks a lot and keep going !!

    1. Hey Max. I tried to include worldwide grosses on each yearly review page…..but I will go back and in more friendly box office grosses pages in the future. Good points on the 1980 movies you mentioned. I love Empire…not a huge fan of Return of the Jedi. Thanks for the kind words…they are greatly appreciated.
