Thus the only way ole Mumbles could be given direct statistical credit for “great influence” is if the grosses/awards etc of actors like Dustin Hoffman and Jack Nicholson and actresses such as Barbra Streisand and Wynona Ryder all of whom claim to have been mesmerised by his style were credited to Mr Mumbles’ stats. However on Cogerson at least there is only one thespian who benefits from that kind of generosity and even then in yesterday’s Top 100 chart SHE was ranked 32nd!!!
Thus all things considered Cogerson has done well for Mr Mumbles and he usually does better only where assessments depart from statistical data and rely on the subjective opinions of revered historians/directors/critics and other Joel types who think they know better than the rest of us.
Examples are AFI which ranks him 4th among male Legends; Variety which ranked him in the Top 10 greatest entertainers of ALL disciplines in the last century; and Time magazine who included him as one of just 4 mainstream big screen stars whom they regarded as being among the 100 most influential people from all walks of life in the 20th century [Chaplin as a comic genius /Sinatra as a singer/and Monroe as a sex symbol being the other 3].
“There is before Brando and there is after Brando. There is no in-between. HE is the marker.” -Martin Scorsese.
“Marlon Brando is widely considered the greatest movie actor of all time, rivaled only by the more theatrically oriented Laurence Olivier in terms of esteem. No other actor has so dominated the public’s consciousness of what WAS an actor before or since Brando’s 1951 on-screen portrayal of Stanley made him a cultural icon. Brando eclipsed the reputation of other great actors circa 1950, such as Paul Muni and Fredric March. Only the luster of Spencer Tracy’s reputation hasn’t dimmed when seen in the starlight thrown off by Brando. However, neither Tracy nor Olivier created an entire school of acting just by the force of his personality. Brando did.” – IMDB.
Hey Bob. Good information on Marlon Brando. I agree….if there was a list of the most influential actors….Brando would easily be the number one person. I did notice that on both list James Stewart easily beat my book’s number Spencer Tracy. Granted Tracy is high up on both lists…but it still makes me wonder. Wynona Ryder is actually on the table of stats…one of the few that does not have an UMR page. One of 15 people. Another of those is Steve Guttenberg. I recently watched one of Bruce’s VOD movies, Trauma Center, and up popped Guttenberg. I had to stop the DVD and really look at him to figure out who it was….sad. Good stuff as always.
HI BRUCE: Thanks for the feedback. Every day your site brings the nostalgic memories flooding back to me; so I was very interested in your comments about Steve Guttenberg. When I first started watching videos in the early 1990s Steve’s Three Men and a Baby and Three men and a Little Lady were doing the rounds.
Despite the presence in them of also Tom Selleck and Ted Danson both of whom I am quite fond of those two films never appealed to me; but on the video library’s shelves at that time was also Steve’s The Bedroom Window [from back in 1987] which I quite enjoyed though it was just a routine film [64% rated by IMDB].
Steve’s female lead in Bedroom Window is Elizabeth McGovern and she first came to my attention as Sir Maurice’s mistress in 1990s A Shock to the System [which my brothers and I watched many times together on video] and which is a very underrated film in my view with Sir Maurice in top form and riveting to watch throughout so that I’m pleased to see that your sources give it a respectable 70% rating.
When I first acquired a video machine in those early 1990s it was like a “new toy” to me and I will always rememeber those fond days very nostalgicallty; hence your mention od Guttenberg triggering the memories of those happy times when I would have been about your age and COULD have run up and down the Philly steps had I wanted to having just completed a marathon!. Anyway my best Easter wishes to all in the Cogerson household.
Hey Bob. One day we will have a Steve Guttenberg page. I thought The Bedroom Window was very good when I saw it in the 1980s…..I recently re-visited pretty recently. Ok….it was not too recent…October of 2018. My Letterboxd review the second time.
“Watched this one time decades ago….back when it was on VHS. This was Steve Guttenberg’s attempt to get away from light comedies and take a turn as an action hero. Sadly for him….and the viewer…it does not work in this movie. Rarely will I criticize an actor….but poor Steve is miscast in this one. The story starts off promising…but quickly derails. The grand finale is a grand letdown. Final thought: Skip this Hitchcock ripoff and watch a Hitchcock movie.”
I loved A Shock To The System….I want to buy it on DVD….as it is a hard movie to find…but I agree Caine is excellent in that movie.
Hope you had a great holiday weekend and hope your area is getting better. Good stuff as always.
HI BRUCE: I too have experienced situations where films that I once loved had lost their appeal for me. For example when growing up I was enthralled with Errol Flynn movies but nowadays I can’t watch them as the Flynn persona in his heyday plots was very self-indulgent in my opinion and I prefer more sedate heroes like the ones played by Laddie/Audie/McCrea.
I have long since given up watching Bond too as I regard him as in effect a conceited show-off [though when Roger Moore played him the critics nicknamed him “James Bland”] whereas the more down to earth spies like Sir Maurice’s Harry Palmer and Sir Alec Guinness’ George Smiley still appeal to me.
If it comes round again I’ll re-watch Bedroom Window to see if it still mildly entertains me as it did years ago. I’ll keep an open mind though because I am conscious of the fact that since you first watched it you have come under the heavy tutelage of one who can be a bit of a ‘hatchet man’ in assessing films/performances and you may have developed some of HIS traits!
Glad we both like A Shock to the System though and that’s not going to change for me. My brother loved the scene where the condescending guy with the ponytail takes over part of Sir Maurice’s office to humiliate him and when Sir M comes across him sitting there Sir M demands to know “What the **** are you doing here?” and when the pony-tailed one gives an unsatisfactory answer Sir M says “Let me clarify myself -WHAT THE **** ARE YOU DOING HERE?
Naturally my brother loved it when later Sir Maurice blows up on a boat Ponytail along with their obnoxious boss. Indeed in a way Sir M one by one taking out his detractors/competitors reminds me of Kind Hearts and Coronets starring Sir Alec Guinness.
HI BRUCE: Another excellent piece of work from you which well-complements your 100 Greatest Stars chart. Combined they will be a great reference source for me in maintaining my own databases and conducting my private movie exercises.
So “voted Up”; and actually a lot of my guys still do well in this more all-inclusive chart. The Duke is at No 8; Greg is at No 12; and Chuck though he is just outside the Top 50 is a PLUS from my perspective because for some reason doesn’t get a mention in MOST other charts.
The Great Mumbler too has actually PROPORTIONATELY improved his position in the larger chart as against the smaller one. Yesterday’s Top 100 of yours placed him at position no 10 in the first 10% of those listed; whereas ranked No 33 in your massive 564 entry table he is in the top 5.85%!
Indeed when certain factors are taken into consideration he has statistically done EXCEPTIONALLY well overall in the Cogerson charts. 10th in your refined Top 100; 33RD in today’s mega chart; and very importantly 27th in your far-reaching 50 Greatest Stars book.
The “certain factors” that I am alluding to are that he made only half [or less] the quantity of movies that many of the others considered to be in his general bracket as a Legend like The Duke and my Jimmy etc churned out; and Mr Mumbles disappeared for long stretches of his career either just artistically speaking or physically which is what Joel moaned about.
Also a lot of Brando’s Legend revolves round the fact that he is at least perceived as the single performer who permanently changed American acting. The extent of such influence where it exists can’t be measured by way of the normal statistical yardsticks such as box office/awards etc
Hey Bob. Like all lists…there are problems for sure….the original table had almost 800 actors and actresses. I like how you broke down Marlon’s % and compared it to the first list. Marlon’s 5 rankings: 403rd, 101st, 97th, 11th, & 71st for a total of 683. That is out of 785 for each category. Heston and Tyrone Power should be on my Top 100. If I ever revisit that one….I will have to get rid of some of my current 100. Good stuff.
I wish I could separate by gender. big down movers for little or no personal Oscar love: harrison ford, mickey rooney, fred Astaire, Edward g robinson, robert downey jr., clint eastwood(especially when directing removed). woody allen goes way down without directing. glad to see Sidney poitier in top 100 for guys.
this is a great list, thanks for all you do. yea UMR, YEA cogerson, Yea WoC.
Hey bob cox. If I add in a gender column….it wrecks the table. I will see if I can figure out a way to get that into the table. Yes Clint’s only directing movies are in the numbers. To me, Clint is the only one….that it is a Clint movie regardless if he directed or starred in it. Probably my Clint bias. Pretty sure Woody’s totals also include both of his movies…as he is in the same boat as Clint. Box office killed Woody’s rankings. Thanks for the kind words and great comment.
I hope you and yours are well. I recently made a list of top 200 actors , no actresses. I shared many of your adjustments. since both lists are UMR based , they are very similar. my starting base was number of movies with UMR UMRreview > = 160 and at least 1 Oscar nomination(for that movie) I adjusted each actor for Oscar nominations and wins for best actor and best supporting actor . big up moves for Oscar: Daniel day lewis, sean penn. paul muni, Richard burton, peter otoole. I included my personal bias. it is too big to send as comment. I would love to share it with you and get your feedback. I would need your email address.
stay safe. you and yours are in my thoughts and prayers, bob cox
Hey bob cox……you can send it to cogersonmoviescore@gmail.com. Hope you are having a great day.
awesome. tell me more about this fabulous ranking.
Hey bob cox. On Friday night I ranked the stars on our Top 100 Movie Star page. On Saturday night I ranked all the stars in my database (ok…not all of them). The basics of these rankings is (1) I ranked almost 800 stars, 1st to last in the 5 categories above (movies made, career domestic box office, Oscar wins and nominations, average movie review % for all their movies and average.
After doing that I added up each person’s rankings in the five categories. The person with the smallest number was the highest rated person…Mr. James Stewart. His rankings were: 34th, 6th, 28th, 25th and 44th for a total of 137….easily beating out Gary Cooper 197 score and Cary Grant 206 score for first place.
At the bottom of the rankings….Judd Nelson’s (he was a favorite back in the day) rankings were: 743rd, 736th, 734th, 739th and 676th for a total of 3,628….holding off Chuck Norris (3583 score) for last place.
By comparing and ranking everybody…..I do believe the cream rose to the top. Doing it this way….a star gets credit for making a lot of movies, loses some credit if they made a bunch of bad movies (see Bruce Willis’ low ranking), gets credit if their movies got new reviews and award love. I had fun putting it together. I did take out lots of character actors that had great spots in the rankings…Thomas Mitchell 5th, Claude Raines 12th and Edward Arnold 30th…are ones I remember dumping from the list.
In the end….I like the rankings…but unlike my new Top 100 rankings…I do not love the end result. Thanks for stopping….glad the Coronavirus has not slowed you up.
