Raoul Walsh Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table

The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.

  • If movie title is a blue, then there is a Raoul Walsh movie trailer attached to the page link
  • Sort Raoul Walsh movies by co-stars or in some cases directors
  • Sort Raoul Walsh movies by adjusted box office grosses using current movie ticket cost
  • Sort Raoul Walsh movies by box office rank in the year of release
  • Sort Raoul Walsh movies by how the movie was received by critics and audiences.  60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
  • Sort by how many Oscar® nominations and how many Oscar® wins each Raoul Walsh movie received.
  • Sort Raoul Walsh movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score.  UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.
  • Use the search and sort buttons to make this table very interactive.

  1. I have seen 23 of the movies directed by Mr. Walsh. All of them are talkies. Favorites are “the Lupinos” They Drive By Night, High Sierra and The Man I Love along with Persued (a really good “different” western), Gentleman Jim, White Heat, The Roaring Twenties, The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw and The Strawberry Blonde. I also liked, for different reasons, Manpower (the reason is called Dietrich), Klondike Annie (Miss West) and The King And Four Queens (funny and good ensemble acting, I especially enjoyed Jo van Fleet and “Birdie” Barbara Nichols), but I would hardly call them favorites. Band Of Angels looks like a failed attempt to cash in on Gone With The Wind 2 decades later, but I must admit that I really love to see Yvonne de Carlo in a big production and costarring with Clark Gable at this point in her career. Good to see you continue finding movie people to make us classic buffs happy 🙂

    1. Hey Lupino
      1. Compared to other tally counts…your 23 seems a little on the low side….one behind Steve…..but still ahead of me.
      2. The stars of his movies are pretty impressive…..Bogie, Dietrich, Fonda, Flynn, Gable, Grant, Peck and Cagney…..not to mention hanging out with D.W. Griffith and Pancho Villa in the 1915s….I bet the man had some awesome stories to tell.
      3. I tried to make sure I included the Lupino trailers.
      4. Of the movies I have not seen….Pursued tops my list now…and your high recommendation only makes me want to see it even more.
      5. I have not seen any of the 3 Gable/Walsh movies….somehow I have managed to almost avoid most of Gable’s 1950s movies…need to fix that issue.
      6. Sadly….I have only seen a few of your favorite Walsh movies….normally that is not the case.
      7. I have noticed finding classic subjects is getting a little harder…but there are still lots of subjects to pick for future classic UMR subjects.

  2. I have seen all his sound movies minus Spendthrift, Me and My Gal and Under Pressure. Of his silent movies (say 1929 back) the only one I have seen is The Thief of Bagdad.

    1. Hey Dan…..well that would put your tally in the mid 50s…..which would easily win our tally contest. Surprised a Henry Fonda movie (Spendthrift) is one of the missing ones….granted I have not seen it either…thanks for the feedback.

  3. I have seen 24 Raoul Walsh movies.

The highest ranked film I have seen is The Thief of Bagdad at number 1.

The lowest ranked film I have seen is A Lion in the Streets at number 56.

The highest ranked film I have NOT seen is Pursued.

I have a lot of favourites:

    Captain Horatio Hornblower
    The Thief of Bagdad
They Died With Their Boots On
    The Strawberry Blond
    They Drive By Night
    White Heat
    The Roaring Twenties
    High Sierra
    Action in the North Atlantic
    The World in His Arms
    The Tall Men
    Manpower

    1. Hey Flora
      1. Tally count: You 24, Steve 17, me 13 and bob cox 4.
      2. I have not seen The Thief of Bagdad, A Lion In The Streets or Pursued.
      3. I have seen 7 of your Top 12. Favorite matches would include Captain Peck, They Died With Their Boots On, White Heat and The Roaring Twenties.
      4. Not sure if you checked out the attached trailer for The World In His Arms….but it one in which Peck talks directly to the camera about the movie….I like those type of trailers….because, to me, it feels like a nice bonus period with the star.
      5. I want to see Manpower and The Tall Men…..actually I have not seen any of the Gable movies…want to see them as well.
      Good stuff as always.

      1. The World in His Arms preview video is unavailable on UMR. The owner disabled all viewing except on Youtube. I will have to watch it there.

  4. I saw 4. I feel like the rookie I am. cagney’s white heat and strawberry blonde just missed being great for me, I think both cases it was the one dimensional lead that made them fall short. no 10s ,no favorites. lots added to watch list.

    1. Hey bob cox….tally count: Tally count….Flora 24, Steve 17, me 13 and you 4. Lots of great classic movies in this page. White Heat is one of my favorite Cagney movies….loved his character in that one….talk about someone having some “mommy” issues….lol. Glad we were able to add “some movies to watch” on your list. Good stuff.

  5. Like Michael Curtiz, Raoul Walsh is one of those old Hollywood directors that rarely gets talked about and he has made some true classics too. There are film fans who like to boast that White Heat is their favorite Cagney movie but do they remember who directed it? “um…. hang on… was it Curtiz?” 😉

I’ve seen 18 of the 64 films on the chart. Favorites include – White Heat, Roaring Twenties, High Sierra, They Died With their Slippers On and Captain Horatio Hornblower.

Battle Cry was his biggest hit eh, interesting, I’m sure I’ve seen it.

The Big Trail was interesting, an expensive western starring John Wayne but it failed at the box office and Wayne had to wait nearly 10 years for John Ford’s Stagecoach before he became a major star.

Another welcome directors page Bruce, good stuff. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve
      1. Thanks for checking out our latest page.
      2. Tally count….Flora 24, you 17, me 13 and bob cox 4.
      3. I agree…Raoul Walsh is rarely talked about when people are talking about great directors….I know I have gotten Walsh and Curtiz movies mixed up before.
      4. You would think his James Bond Villain look (the black eye patch) would have added something to his legacy.
      5. I have seen all of your favorites with White Heat, Roaring 20s and They Died With Boots On…being amongst my favorites too.
      6. The Big Trail actually did decent at the box office….but it cost so much to make it was a financial disaster……kind of like the modern Waterworld.
      7. Thanks for the kind words about the page.
