1. Albert Edward Walsh was born in New York in 1887.  He was the brother of actor, George Walsh.

2.  Raoul Walsh was a friend of the Barrymore acting family.   John Barrymore spent many a hour in the Walsh family library.

3. Raoul Walsh began acting in 1909, first as a stage actor in New York City and later as a film actor.

4. Raoul Walsh changed his professional name–at the suggestion of playwright friend Paul Armstrong–from Albert Edward Walsh to the more exotic Raoul Walsh.

8. Raoul Walsh was the assistant director on D.W. Griffith’s epic The Birth of a Nation (1915).  Walsh appeared in front of the cameras as well….as he played John Wilkes Booth.

9.  Raoul Walsh served as an officer in the United States Army during World War I.

10.  Raoul Walsh was set to direct and star as the Cisco Kid in In Old Arizona (1928), but had to abandon the project when a jackrabbit jumped through a windshield of a vehicle he was driving and cost Walsh an eye, after which he wore an eyepatch for the remainder of his life. Walsh never acted again but continued his illustrious career as a film director.

11.  Director Raoul Walsh saw “Duke” Morrison moving studio furniture and decided to cast him in the lead role in the 1930’s big budget western The Big Trail.   “Duke Morrison” is better known as John Wayne.
