Ray Liotta (1954-2022) was an American actor, voice actor, and film producer.   Liotta appeared in movies for over 40 years.  Liotta was best known for his role as Henry Hull in 1990’s Goodfellas.  His IMDb page shows over 141 acting credits from 1981 to 2022.  This page will rank Ray Liotta movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, videos, games, and movies that were not released in North American theaters were not included in the rankings.  To do well in our overall rankings a movie has to do well at the box office, get good reviews by critics, be liked by audiences, and get some award recognition.  This is a request (ok multiple requests) from Mike (known mainly as Anonymous).

  1. Hmm Ray Liotta has been prolific and a good subject for a possible future video.

I’ve seen 20 of the 68 films on the chart. Favorites include – Goodfellas, Cop Land, Hannibal, Field of Dreams, Observe and Report, Wild Hogs (guilty pleasure), Unlawful Entry, Sin City 2, Turbulence and No Escape (a failed attempt to turn Ray Liotta into an action hero but I enjoyed it).

Top rated films I haven’t seen – Marriage Story and The Pines Beyond the Place.

Goodfellas easily his best film and role but looking at the chart it’s not among his top 5 most successful films. Wild Hogs was twice as popular on the big screen. 🙂

Ray Liotta as Tony Soprano? Interesting but I think Gandolfini was the perfect choice.

    Good stuff Bruce. Vote Up.

    1. Hey Steve. Thanks for checking out our Ray Liotta page. Tally count…..20 for you…..43 for me. I have seen all of your favorites except for Turbulence. I would put Goodfellas, Field of Dreams and Unlawful Entry on my favorites list too. I enjoyed Marriage Story…and Liotta is excellent in his role as Adam Driver’s lawyer…but not thinking I will be re-watching that one anytime soon. Interesting that Wild Hogs is a guilty pleasure…..that movie has always surprised me….at the box office …..it just kept bringing in lots of money weekend after weekend. When I saw it in theaters….I was like…”it’s ok”. It was a money printing machine. Travolta and Robin Williams tried to recapture that magic later in Old Dogs….it did not work. Good stuff as always….and now the video meetings start.

  2. Other stats about Ray’s career and spin-offs:

1/31 television productions between 1980 and 2018 when he had a voice role in The Simpsons. Ray’s turn as a voice-only guest in a Dec 1995 episode of the TV sitcom series Frasier [called Frasier Grinch] made me laugh in the brief minute or so that he spoke.

    2/involved with 2 video games in 2002 and 2013

3/2 music videos made in 2014 and 2015

4/appeared as the character Mike in the Broadway play Match in 2004.

5/IMDB credits Ray overall with 9 acting awards and 11 noms; and according to Celebrity Net Worth site his current net worth is $14 million.

I have always enjoyed Ray’s work [Goodfellows excepted] and Bruce’s comprehensive tables above show how hard Ray has workded building up a massive film career; so this new page is “Voted Up!”. In the pipeline for him are (1) just completed: the thriller Broken Soldier in which he is 3rd billed (2) 4 other projects at post production stage. So he’s still keeping busy

    1. Hey Bob….good breakdown on more of Ray’s work and his net worth. Thanks for the vote up. I agree….he has indeed been keeping very busy.

  3. Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellows has been universally praised and many consider it one of the greatest gangster films of all time. That pleases me as I am a big Scorsese fan.

However I have only partially seen the movie as for some reason I could never take to it -maybe it was DeNiro’s incessant swearing that makes John McClane sound like a choir boy that turned me off as DeNiro’s type of gratuitous effing and blinding has become too repetitive for my taste.

Accordingly I switched off the set after about half an hour of Goodfellows and the films for which I will most remember Ray are (1) Unlawful Entry in which he was impressively chilling as a bad cop (2) Costner’s Field of Dreams where Ray cuts a heroic figure as the once baseball Great [Shoeless Joe Jackson] who is one of the ghost players from the past who comes to visit Kevin’s Field of Dreams. [Beautiful heartwarming low-key performance in that one from Burt Lancaster as Doc Archibald “Moonlight” Graham.]

Other movies in which I have liked Ray are:

    The Place Beyond the Pines
    Killing Them Softly
Copland – Ray demonstrating to Sly that there is a thing called ACTING
    Hannibal
    Identity.

    1. Hey Bob. Hmmmmm. Interesting thoughts on Goodfellas. I have to say we are not seeing eye to eye on this one. To me, I am with the masses. I consider it one of the best movies ever made. Of all the great Scorsese movies, this is the one I can re-watch the most. I am sure, we can get over these differences….as it has happened before…..lol. Looking at the ones you like…I am happy to see Field of Dreams, Identity (a very underrated thriller) and Unlawful Entry on that list….and I AGREE with you. Good stuff as always.

  4. As for Ray Liotta movies? I have seen 43 of the movies listed here. My Top 5 Ray Liotta Movies….in no order. Identity, Goodfellas, Field of Dreams, Unlawful Entry and Marriage Story. That puts me at a 64% when looking at his movies.

  5. So the other day I had a rare spot of time with not much to do. So how did I use this time? By going through 1000s of comments and trying to switch “Anonymous” to the proper commenter. This put Mike from not being on the Top Commenter Leader Board….to reaching the 16th spot for most comments. Hey Mike….can you start to use your name in your requests?

Anyway, as I was going through those comments, I noticed Ray Liotta had been suggested by Mike numerous times…..and lots of time between those requests. So I figured it was time to finally give his a request some attention. So now we have a Liotta page with almost 70 movies ranked.

    1. HI BRUCE

“You couldn’t make it up” the cliche goes so Dan must be at it again!

Wiki lists just one theatrical play for Ray: 2004’s “Match” and in it Ray’s character is called Mike – see my other posts about Ray today.

Any truth in the rumor that Eastwood’s planning another Dollars movie and in it The Man with No Name is going to be called Mike instead of Joe or Manco?

      1. Hey Bob…..I have noticed Mike has been using his name versus Anonymous lately….and he is moving up the chart pretty quickly….I would say he is in the running for an UMR Hall of Fame status. Good information on Match. Good stuff.

    2. Now it makes sense. I view you the top comment page like a challenge. I was glad to make the list. At the time there weren’t nearly this many people on the list, and Mike certainly was not ahead of me. But I guess he was when you consider his anonymous comments.Still I’m glad to take a spot in the top 20. Thanks for explaining why that list change so much from the last time I was here.

      1. Hey Taylor. Glad it makes sense now. I have since limited the list again….trying to include all people that have done 100 comments….or are pretty close to 100. Congrats on your spot in the Top 20. I have appreciated your comments.
