Want to know the best Ray Milland movies? How about the worst Ray Milland movies? Curious about Ray Milland box office grosses or which Ray Milland movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Ray Milland movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.
Ray Milland (1905-1986) was a Welsh Oscar® winning actor and director. Milland’s movie career spanned over 7 decades. His IMDB page shows 176 credits from 1928-1985. This page will rank 96 Ray Milland movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. His television appearances, cameos, uncredited and movies not released in North America were not included in the rankings.
Drivel part of the page: This Ray Milland page comes from a request by Chris. It is safe to say it was a pain in the ass to put together. We blame his very long and very productive career and the fact that he made so many movies at Paramount for the amount of effort it took to get this page published. For the record….Milland has 96 movies listed on this page, 46 television roles, 9 uncredited roles, and 13 movies not released in North America. That is a grand total of 164…which means there are still 12 movies that we were unable to find box office grosses on. As it stands now….Milland’s 96 movies is the biggest page by an individual performer in our database. Ok…we are done complaining…on to the massive table.

1. Alfred Reginald Jones was born in Neath, Wales in 1907.
2. Got his stage name of Milland from the Mill lands area of his Welsh home town of Neath
3. When working on 1941’s I Wanted Wings, Ray Milland went up with a pilot to test a plane for filming. While up in the air, Milland decided to do a parachute jump (being an avid amateur parachutist) but, just before he could disembark, the plane began to sputter and the pilot said not to jump as they were running low on gas and he needed to land. Well, once on the ground and in the hangar, Ray began to tell his story of how he had wanted to do a jump. As he told the story, the color ran out of the costume man’s face. When asked why, he told Ray that the parachute he had worn up in the plane was “just a prop”. There had been no parachute.
4. Ray Milland was only nominated for one Oscar®….but he made it count…as he won the Best Actor Oscar® for 1945’s The Lost Weekend.
5. Ray Milland’s Oscar® acceptance speech was only 10 words long…. “Thank you. Thank you very much indeed. I’m greatly honored.” ..obviously one of the shortest speeches ever.
6. Ray Milland tried to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, but was rejected due to an “impaired left hand”.
7. Ray Milland was married one time and had 2 children. He was married to Muriel Frances Weber from 1932 to his death in 1986.

Another classic actor! Ray Milland had a long career, interesting for many reasons.
In a career exceeding 50 years, he acted in many classics, often in starring, later in supporting parts. He tried his hand at directing with varying results, but I like his Panic in the year zero. Like many of his contemporaries, he wasn’t spared grade B and later Z pictures. 100 plus films, only one Oscar nom- but a grand performance that one was! I have seen 30 of the above listed films, my fav Milland performance of course is Lost Weekend. But I do love a lot of his movies- The Big Clock, Ministry of Fear, Easy Living, The Uninvited, So evil, my Love, Arise, my Love, I wanted -wings, The gilded Lily come to mind. And what a bunch of wonderful actresses he worked with- Dietrich, Sullavan, O’Hara, Jean Arthur, Wyman, Lamarr, Stanwyck- to name just a few! Of his later work, I enjoyed Love Story and, strangely enough, Frogs…yet what a comedown from Lost Weekend! Thanks for all the labour you put into creating this page!
Hey Lupino….congrats on another tally contest win. His career got sure had lots of high and lows. His last 20 years of movies is one low budget never to be heard from again movie after another.
So you liked Frogs?…..you are not alone as that one seems to have some fans. Seems Milland should have picked up at least one other Oscar nomination during his long career. I will have to check out some of the Milland movies you recommended.
Thanks for checking out this massive page.
Wow this is a lot of movies. I guess if you work steadily for 50 years you are going to have a large movie resume.
So one nomination and one win. I bet that does not happen too often. Especially when looking at Best Actor and Actress.
Hey SteinHOF…..yep if you stay working for almost 60 years you are going to wind up with a massive amount of movies on your resume.
As for your question about one nomination one win…..it has me thinking. I know Heston, Brynner and Colin Firth would be in that club. But I imagine most winners have more than one win.
Thanks for the visit and the comment.
Hi
The story about the parachute is amazing. He had another near miss while making Hotel Imperial. He went flying off his horse into a pile of glass, in hospital for over a week and leaving his arm permanently damaged. Before Catherine Zeta, Anthony Hopkins and Richard Burton, he was probably Wales most famous star. Although I imagine most Americans probably seen him as English.
It was amazing that he came to Hollywood in the 30’s with little acting experience but he was a great marksman and horse rider and of course good looks opened many doors. All his films were small supporting roles and it was wasn’t until The Jungle Princess that he became a name.
He had an interesting career and made some terrific films. My favourite would definitely be Dial M for Murder, playing the suave debonair sophisticate who wants to murder his wife. He was fantastic in the part and should have been nominated.
It’s quite a while since I seen Lost Weekend. The night he won the Oscar, he drove round Hollywood in an open top convertible showing off his Oscar, he must have been peeved that the headlines the next day was about Crawford lying in bed receiving hers.
He once said that one of the highlights of his life was going to the premiere of Lost Weekend in Cardiff, Wales.
Later on he made a movie called The Premier Burial and The Man with X Ray Eyes, both cheaply made movies but really entertaining.
As for Love Story, his part was small but memorable. Thanks for the page.
Hey Chris
1. I loved the Milland parachute story too. I imagine he told that story the rest of his life.
2, You are right most people think he is British….I know I did.
3. Interesting story about his Oscar winning night.
4. Dial M For Murder is in my Top 3 Milland movies too. He is so good in the movie you actually want him to get away with it.
5. I liked Premature Burial too.
Good comment, thanks for sharing your Ray Milland thoughts.
I don’t have a very high total.
The highest ranked film I have seen is The Lost Weekend.
The highest ranked film I have not seen is Love Story.
I have seen 11 movies only – so I have lots of movies to watch.
My favourites are Dial M for Murder, The Big Clock and The Uninvited.
Hey Flora…..thanks for the return visit. I am shocked to see that I top you in a classic performer tally. Of the three you mentioned as favorites…they would be my three favorites as well. I just watched The Uninvited a few months ago and really enjoyed it.
As for not seeing Love Story….not thinking you are missing much…..it was a huge hit…but has not aged well at all. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Ray Milland…it is greatly appreciated.
Tally count so far.
Lupino 30 movies
Steve 16 movies
Cogerson 12 movies
Flora 11 movies
