Raymond Burr (1917-1993) was a Candian actor.  Burr was primarily known for his title roles in the television dramas Perry Mason and Ironside.   Despite his television roles overshadowing his movie roles, he, in fact, had a very solid movie career.  His most famous movie role was as the bad guy in 1954’s Rear Window.    His IMDb page shows 145 acting credits from 1946 to 1993.  This page will rank Raymond Burr movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, movies not released in North American theaters and a few of his low budget 1950s movies were not included in the rankings.  To do well in our overall rankings a movie has to do well at the box office, get good reviews by critics, be liked by audiences and get some award recognition. This comes from a long time request from UMR Hall of Famer, Flora.

  1. Good to see that Flora is on the same page as me for I too am currently watching all of the old 1957-66 Perry Mason television episodes. I also agree with the summing up of WH and -though I hate to concede it – Hirsch of the career and qualities of Raymond.

Especially good trivia from The Work Horse; and talking about Hitch in one episode of the 1957-66 series there was a role reversal under which Raymond who was the menacing villain of Rear Window was of course good guy Mason whilst Wendell Corey the good guy cop pal of my Jimmy in Rear Window was a bad guy murder victim. In the Mason episode Ray and Wendell had some strong scenes together.

In the later episode of the series Raymond had again put on weight and in appearance was like the villain in Rear Window but in the early episodes he was slimmed down and looked very handsome and debonair.

    1. Hey Bob, thanks for your thoughts on Raymond Burr. Interesting information about his reverse role in Hitchcock’s television show. Good to see you and Joel agreeing on something, having some really long has rejoice when it finally happens. Now onto your next comment.

    1. This looks like a duplicate comment, I will try and delete that when I am on my computer versus my phone.

Sorry – I would be grateful if you would delete the 5.23 am one as it is wrongly labelled Part 2.
I never spotted the duplication. Many thanks.

    1. By the way, you mention in the possibly interesting facts that Burr appeared on a Canadian postage stamp. I do not have one of Burr, but I do have one of Norma Shearer.

      1. Hey Flora, marks cool that you have the Norma Shearer stamp. I wonder how much the Raymond Burr stamp goes for these days?

    2. Hey Flora. Glad you like your long requested page on Raymond Burr. Sorry it took so long to complete, had lots of issues with all his low budget the movies from the 1950s. Tally count. I am seeing eight compared to your 16. I have only seen two of your favorites. Rear Window and The Adventures of Don Juan. I’ll have to check out his movie with Angela Lansbury. Thanks for sharing your movie knowledge on him. Good stuff as always.

  4. Rating The Movie Stars 4 Star Raymond Burr Performances

    1948’s Raw Deal
    1948’s Pitfall
1951’s His Kind of a Woman
    1954’s Rear Window
1956’s A Cry in the Night

    1. I have only seen one of the five 4 star performances….and a grand total of 8 Raymond Burr movies seen. Rear Window, his two Godzilla movies, Delirious, Airplane 2, A Place in the Sun, Casanova’s Big Night and Adventures of Don Juan.

  5. “It took television to make a sympathetic actor out of Raymond Burr. In movies he was always menacing, usually murderous. Hitchcock’s Rear Window presented him at his loathsome best, as the man across the courtyard who hacked up his wife and stuffed her in a suitcase. Please Murder Me gave Burr his one starring part and billing, as a crooked attorney in love with Angela Lansbury. Dieting made the difference, and he found long-overdue stardom as “Perry Mason” and “Ironside”. But along the way, the screen lost possibly its best villain.” -Rating The Movie Stars
