  2. Raymond was a great character actor who was terrific in authority-figure roles such as Sherlock Holmes***; the legendary ‘Uncle Abe’; and even the sophisticated leader of a gang of stagecoach robbers in Randy Scott’s 1952 Carson City. However, his face was too austere ever to win over mass audiences as a major star.

***A great coincidence is that Raymond’s son in law was ultimately Jeremy Brett [1933-1965] who married Raymond’s daughter English actress Anna Massey [1937-2011].

Jeremy’s best-known big screen role is probably Freddy Eynsford-Hill in 1964’s My Fair Lady who sang the song On the Street Where You Live. However on TV over half a century after Raymond played Sherlock in 1931’s The Speckled Band Jeremy was highly-praised for his own performance as Holmes in the 1984/85 series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and its follow-ups.

    1. IN the 2nd para graph of my earlier post Brett’s life span should of course have been recorded as 1933-1995. Apologies – but oh for a timely correction button!

  3. I have seen 39 of the Raymond Massey films listed above. The only ones I haven’t seen are, The Fiercest Heart, The Queen’s Guards and The Speckled Band.

Raymond Massey was never on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000; these are the actors on the 2020 list he appeared with.

    1. Hey Dan
      1. Thanks as always for these trivia lists.
      2. Tally count….Wow 39…or 92.8% of his movies….pretty good….granted there were a handful that I struck out when researching box office numbers…so the were not included.
      3. His take on Sherlock Holmes in The Speckled Band is almost a forgotten movie.
      4. Looking at this career…it looks like he tried to pick high prestige type movies…..which is probably why his movie total is not that high.
      5. I mean Michael Caine has almost appeared in as many movies as Massey after turning 70!
      6. Looking at the Oracle list…it is actually pretty short…..but with Gregory Peck getting the Oracle honor of being the most frequent co-star….it is a good list…especialy with people like Bob and Flora…both huge Peck fans.
      7. His Oscar list is much more impressive…with an excellent % of Oscar winners to movies.
      As always good stuff.
