February 9th – Remembering Albert Finney

I heard the news of Albert Finney’s death today while I was at work….

His top rated movie is Tom Jones (1963).  At the 1964 Academy Awards, this movie was nominated for 10 Oscars….. and won 4 Oscars, including Best Picture.  In addition, Mr. Finney picked up a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

  1. HI BRUCE

Thanks for your reply and holiday wishes.

Good to see others on this site paying their respects to Albert. In Sat Night and Sun Morning he was the nearest thing we over here in the United Kingdom had to a “rebellious” icon like Dean and Brando in the States, Finney’s Arthur Seaton in Sat Night was contemptuous of virtually anything that moved.

Am out walking most of the day but have managed in the evenings to enjoy your Charles Coburn page and Steve’s new George Hamilton and Van Cleef videos. Will offer comments when I return and in meantime take care.

We are mostly out of contact with news here on holiday and on looking in on your site as I do daily I caught your notice of Finney’s sad death.

I always admired him for having the courage of his convictions in turning down a Brit knighthood as he thought the British honours system formented snobbery.

    RIP Albert

    1. Hey Bob….hope your holiday is going well. Sad news indeed about the passing of Finney. I actually thought he was a knight…but I agree….it seems fitting for him to turn down that honor. I actually just re-watched one of his movies Wednesday night…Amazing Grace. A small but important role in that movie that rarely gets mentioned these days. Good stuff as always.
