Rhonda Fleming (1923-2020) was an American film/television actress and singer. She acted in more than forty films, mostly in the 1940s and 1950s, and became renowned as one of the most glamorous actresses of her day. She was nicknamed the “Queen of Technicolor” because her fair complexion and flaming red hair photographed exceptionally well. This page ranks 36 Rhonda Fleming movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television shows, bit parts and her movies not released in North America theaters are not included in the rankings. This page comes from a request by Mike.

Hey Dan. As always…Thank you for these Bacon bits. Not surprised she was not in the original Top 1000. I remember seeing the ads for The Nude Bomb….not sure if I ever watched that one….I suspect if I did….it was a very forgettable movie. I guess Bruce Dern is the last chance to keep her connected to the current list…..as he is still pretty active. Good to see Bess Flowers on the second list….but only 2 movies? So she made three movies with Fritz Feld?….never heard of him. As for Oscar winning co-stars…22 falls in the below average character….but based on all of her B movies it is imprssive. Since You Went Away was the big contributor there. Good feedback as always.
You probably have seen Fritz Feld, he always does some mouth trick and pops the side of his cheek to make a noise. He was in a lot of Jerry Lewis movies.
Thanks for the information Fritz. I will keep my eyes open for him.
I have seen 12 Rhonda Fleming movies. I am thrilled she is still with us at 95.
The HIGHEST rated film I have seen is Spellbound at number 1.
The highest rated film I have NOT seen is The Great Lover.
The LOWEST rated film I have seen is Gun Glory at 24.
I enjoy her performance always no matter what the film.
Favourite Rhonda Fleming Movies:
Out of the Past
While the City Sleeps
Gunfight at the OK Corral
Spellbound
The Spiral Staircase
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court
Hey Flora…thanks for checking out our Rhonda Fleming page. Yep…she is 95 and still going strong. I have seen Spellbound…but it is far from my favorite Hitchcock movie. I have only seen 4 of her movies so my knowledge of her is very limited. Gun Glory was a modest hit for a low budget movie…the power of Granger? My 4 Fleming movies watched are all on your favorites list..so I think I watched the right 4….lol. I will have to check out Connecticut Yankee and While the City Sleeps. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Rhonda Fleming.
HI BRUCE Rhonda was never an A list star and usually was to be found in programmers with the male action heroes of the day like John Payne, and Jeff Chandler in Yankee Pasha, Jeff’s “Indiana Jones” outing that a neighbour/colleague of yours started various exchanges about a few months ago .
Rarely would she be the top star and/or get first billing in a movie and in Home before Dark in 1958 she actually had obscure billing compared with the movie’s star Jean Simmons.
The following movies Rhonda WAS billed top in but of course there was no other big star in any of them – The Golden Hawk, Those Redheads from Seattle, Queen of Babylon, and Serpent of the Nile in which she played Cleopatra and I think sported a big black wig which might spoil Steve’s technicolour party!
My favourite Fleming movies are probably While the City Sleeps [Fritz Lang directed] Home before Dark, Slightly Scarlet and Tennessee’s Partner [both the latter starring John Payne and the last named also starring Ronnie Reagan, both those men being fave co-stars of Rhonda].
I also liked the 1958 Bullwhip [a sort of western reworking of the Taming of the Shrew with Rhonda as the “shrew” and Guy Madison as her tamer]. You haven’t included it above but IMDB gives it just a 51% rating so I doubt if you would have been over the moon about it.
Whilst in my view she was not an A list star Rhonda was undoubtedly one of the bulwarks of the Hollywood production line system of the Classic Era that relied heavily on lovely co-stars like her to provide the love interest for the action hero males. Accordingly thumbs up from me for your Fleming profile.
By the way I liked your lobby card for Chuck’s Pony Express, one of my fave Heston early fifties westerns though it is your lowest critically ranked movies on Rhonda’s page. However I forgive you as you gave reasonable to excellent rating for the 4 personal favouritesFleming films I mentioned above.
Also I wasn’t aware that Rhonda made a movie with my Rory [Adventure Island] so I appreciate your drawing that to my attention.
Hey Bob. Thanks for such a detailed comment. I feel I know her a little more now. She has lots of less than 1 million rental movies….which makes me not feel too solid on the box office totals….but I think if anything they are too high versus too low…..which is amazing…because there are lots of low grossers here.
Yep she and Rory made a movie together. Glad you like the Pony Express poster. Sorry that Bullwhip is not included….my sources give no help as to it’s box office grosses. I have not seen any of your favorite Rhonda movies…I will have to check out While the City Sleeps Home before Dark, Slightly Scarlet and Tennessee’s Partner.
I remember the Yankee Pasha exchanges….but I have still not seen that movie. Good feedback as always.
FYI….did you ever check out the podcast and hear how you got singled out? The only contributor that was actually named?
HI Bruce
Thanks for the feedback on Rhonda.
I would suspect that rentals below $1 million would not be unrealistic in Rhonda’s case as she was in a lot of B movie/programmers made for a pittance and turning good collective profits from tiny grosses
A slight Dan like link. Rhonda is one of my very fave 1950s B movie actresses and of course Deanna Durbin is in my first 3 A list female stars. Deanna turned down the part that Rhonda got in Bing’s 1949 A Connecticut Yankee as demonstrated in your table above.
I can’t remember if I saw the podcast. Would it be too much trouble for you to give me a link for it and I can anyway watch it again if I have seen it?
Thanks too for the additional Asta information. We have a store chain over here called AsDa and I always have to watch that I don’t mix that name up with AsTa. Nothing’s ever simple, is it!
Hey Bob….I would bet her “below 1 million rental movies” might be the most of any performer that has gotten an UMR page. Good to know that she was one of your favorites. As for the podcast….here is a link….https://www.ultimatemovierankings.com/cogerson-blackeyeland-podcast/
95 years old! Wow! One of the oldest living Hollywood legends, Kirk, Olivia, there can’t be that many left.
I’ve seen 7 of the 36 films on the chart – Spellbound, Gunfight at the OK Corral, The Big Circus, Out of the Past, Connecticut Yankee, The Patsy and Alias Jesse James.
My favorite being Gunfight at OK Corral followed by Spellbound and Out of the Past aka Build My Gallows High (which was also the original story title).
Looking at the box office – Spellbound was a smash hit, bigger than Gunfight.
From what I’ve read Rhonda Fleming hated B/W movies because she couldn’t show off her flaming red hair.
Nice work Bruce. Vote Up!
Hey Steve gotta admit…I am not too aware of Rhonda Fleming. I have only seen 4 of her movies….but I have seen her Top 3…and four of the Top 5…..I have not seen The Great Lover. Actually surprised you have not seen The Spiral Staircase (one of the 4 that I have seen)…as that was considered one of the first horror/thriller movies. I have seen Spellbound (not impressed), Gunfight at the OK Corral (fun movie but give me Tombstone) and Out of the Past (film noir classic). I think I agree with Fleming…technicolor really worked for her. Thanks for checking out our latest UMR page.
