Again my mistake Ricardo was # 742 in 2000.
As massive as your comments are…..I feel pretty sure we can forgive you for this mistake…..just do not let it happen again….lol. You are still the man.
Hey Dan
1. Thanks for the Montalban lists.
2. The second list is especially long…..and only two Bess Flowers movies.
3. Some major players on the first list should keep Ricardo connected for a very long time. Danny Trejo alone, makes about 20 movies a year….granted…nobody has heard of them.
4. I actually saw a recent IMDb interview with him….and they quizzed him all his movie roles…and he did very well answering their questions (they were not easy at all)….so many IMDb credits for him
5. 27 Oscar winners is actually on the low side…especially since he worked at MGM for so many years….he is in the famous picture from 1950…where all the stars are sitting….pretty sure he was close to 27 winners in that photo alone.
6. I like seeing Bing Russell’s name on the 2000 list…not many people remember him today….even with lots of Russell family actors running around….I am beginning to really enjoy Wyatt Russell in movies…Bing would be pleased with his grandson.
Good feedback as always….fixed all your anonymous issues.
Thanks for my requested page on Ricardo Montalban. Although I know him best as Khan I am quite familiar with his career outside Star Trek as an actor, singer and dancer. His films are often on TCM.
I have seen 23 Ricardo Montalban movies.
The highest rated film I have seen is Sayonara at number 1.
The highest rated film I have NOT seen is Spy Kids 2.
The lowest rated film I have seen is Cannonball Run II.
Favourite Montalban Movies:
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Battleground
Mystery Street (deserves to be better known – early CSI-style detective work)
Border Incident
Across the Wide Missouri
On An Island With You
Neptune’s Daughter
The Singing Nun
Sweet Charity
The Naked Gun
Sayonara
Two Weeks With Love
Bruce: can you please fix the spelling in the first sentence to be Montalban and not Montbtalban. Oops!
By the way – you will notice that I did not include Cheyenne Autumn in my list of favourite Montalban movies despite it starring Richard Widmark. Both Widmark and Montalban were great in the film, but there is a segment starring James Stewart in a comedy storyline in Dodge City in the middle of the film which makes the otherwise serious western a bit uneven. I think Ford should have cut that part out.
Hey Flora…yep I noticed that Cheyenne Autumn did not make your favorites list. Shocking…especially since it stars Richard Widmark. Interesting about the comedy being out of place. The great John Ford was nearing the end of his awesome career…..sadly he did not go out on a high note…as most of his 1960s really struggled. Thanks for the mini-review of Cheyenne Autumn….which is another movie that I have not seen yet.
Flora, Bruce, from what I remember reading John Ford inserted that James Stewart bit in the middle of Cheyenne Autumn as a sort of intermission, a toilet break because the film was so long. Hang on let me check… here is what IMDB trivia says about it –
“Ford added the segment with Stewart in place of an intermission. He didn’t want people leaving the auditorium to go the bathroom or concessions counter, even though the film was long, and so he came up with the Wyatt Earp segment. He later quipped to Stewart that the actor was the “best intermission” in the movies.”
I’m sure some Stewart fans only watch that film because their idol is in it, I’ve seen the film a few times and it’s a bit of a chore to sit thru, best thing about it is the cinematography.
Steve: Thanks for the additional information about Cheyenne Autumn’s intermission. I understand Ford’s logic in wanting to keep people in their seats. Still, it remains out of place for me. If I were watching it for James Stewart instead of Richard Widmark, I would be disappointed in the amount of screen time he gets. You are right about the cinematography. It’s beautiful.I have seen the film a few times as well.
Hey Steve….now that is a great piece of trivia….I had never heard of that scene before today. Now I am really interested in checking it out. Thanks for explaining it to me and Flora…it is greatly appreciated.
Fixed your spelling error…will comment in a little bit.
Hey Flora…..well your 23 destroys Steve and mine tallies…..combined we have you by two movies. Sadly, I rarely watch TCM….so almost all of the movies I have seen of his are the most recent ones. My first miss is #5 Neptune’s Daughter. I, like you, suffered through Cannonball Run 2…..and that is the worst one I saw.
I have seen 5 of your favorites…with Khan and Naked Gun being in my favorites…I like Sayonara…but it is not a movie that begs to be re-watched. I want to Across The Wide Missouri…..especially since I have been trying to track down lots of Gable movies to watch. Just watched Band of Angels the other day. Mystery Street looks interesting as well.
Thanks for the feedback…stellar stuff as always.
Bruce: Repeating this comment here in its more logical place instead of after your response to someone else.
RE: Across the Wide Missouri. This was the movie that Montalban was making when he feel from a horse and injured his spine. Although in great pain a lot of the time, he did not need a wheelchair until he was old.
Hey Flora…..good but sad trivia on Ricardo’s injury on Across the Wide Missouri. Shows you how tough he was….despite the major injury…..he kept making movies. There is a great scene in Spy Kids 3….where with computer graphics that get Ricardo walking in the movie…it looks like Ricardo is really enjoying being in that scene. Good stuff as always.
Thank you very much for featuring Ricardo Montalban. He was talented and versatile actor actor and a true gentlemen. His long career had several stages: 1942-1945, Mexican film star; 1945-1952, MGM leading man of dramas and musicals; 1953-1960, freelance film star; and 1960s to 2009, theater actor, television actor. In the 1960s, he co-founded Nosotros, an organization dedicated to creating opportunities and improving the images of Mexican Americans and Latino talent.
I had the pleasure to interview him for a book one time. He was a gentlemen, generous with his time, considerate of others, and wonderfully intelligent. He was one of the true film stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Thank you for all your wonderful work and God bless you!
Hey Frank
1. Glad you enjoyed our latest UMR page.
2. Doing this page has helped me realize how ” talented and versatile” he was…..in some ways it is reminding me of when I realized Shirley Jones an Fred MacMurray had career before I found them on television re-runs. :Learn something new everyday.
3. I like your breakdown of his career….sadly I could not find box office grosses on many of his movies…especially his early Mexican movies of the 1940s.
4. That is awesome that you to interview….and even more awesome that he was such a good person while interviewing him…..I am sure not all stars are like that.
5. I agree…..he was a true star of the Golden Age.
Thanks for this comment….it was greatly appreciated.
This comment should have been in answer to Bruce’s comment to me, not Frank.
Removed the extra comment.
This was eye-opening. I had no idea he was singer and dancer. I was watching the early trailers and there he is dancing like Fred Astaire. I might not look at his Fantasy Island character the same. Thanks for showing me the light.
Hey Helakoski…I knew he was a popular MGM player….but like you …I did not realize he was talented as a singer and dancer. Astaire, Kelly and Montalban….who knew? Good to hear from you…thanks for the visit.
“Khaaaaaannnnn!” Ricardo Montalban’s iconic role as Khan Noonien Singh in Star Trek is how I most remember this actor. I wasn’t much of a Fantasy Island fan.
I had a friend and fellow Trekkie who always called him Monbaltan instead of Montalban, Ricardo Monbaltan, aaah memories….
I’ve seen 13 of the 33 films listed, more than I thought. Favorites are – Star Trek II, Escape from and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, The Naked Gun and The Train Robbers.
Good to see Star Trek II doing well on the charts.
It’s been ages since I last saw Sayonara, might be time to watch it again, a huge hit, I think it was Brando’s biggest until The Godfather?
Excellent work as usual, Vote Up!
Hey Steve…..one of the most famous single word lines in movie history….it has to be up there with “Stellllaaaaa”. I know Billy Shatner says Khan….not sure who says the Stella line.
I used to watch Fantasy Island on weekend sleepovers at my grandmother’s house….Love Boat and Fantasy Island and then bedtime. Not sure I really understood what the show was about and if Mr. Rourke was a magical being.
Funny about your friend calling him Monbaltan….glad this page brought back those memories.
I have seen 12 of his movies….so I am one behind you. I am not sure if I have seen all of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes…..so it is not in tally…..though I am sure I have seen parts of it.
Star Trek 2….did well indeed….not as good as Sayonara ….that Brando movie was one of the biggest hits of the 1950s……amazingly it is rarely mentioned when Brando movies get talked about.
Thanks for the visit, the comment and the memory sharing.
