  1. Irish hellraiser Richard Harris has made it to the UMR, a worthy subject!

Harris and Hirschhorn had someone in common they disliked…clue – “I coulda been a contender… I coulda had class…” 😉

I’ve seen 19 of the 52 films on the chart. Favorites include – Mutiny on the Bounty, The Wild Geese, Hairy Putter 1 & 2, The Guns of Navarone, Major Crocodile Dundee, Gladiator and Unforgiven.

$335m adjusted domestic gross for Bounty was pretty good considering it was regarded as a disaster. How many films today get that far? Double that for the rest of the world and Mutiny wasn’t quite as disastrous as they reported. It was expensive but nowhere near Cleopatra levels.

Good stuff Bruce and thanks for the link, it is appreciated. Vote Up!

    1. Hey Steve….you just barely edge me in the tally counts. 19 to 18. Seen all of your favorites except for Major Dundee….one day I will see that movie. Just like one day you will watch Mrs. Miniver….lol. Unforgiven is my favorite Harris movie….to me he is better in smaller roles. Granted his two Oscar nominations were for Best Actor. I have also never seen This Sporting Life…unlike Major Dundee…I actually know where a copy of the DVD is of that movie…..just need to watch it. As for The Mutiny on the Bounty….it is exactly like Cleopatra….made a bunch of money….but cost so much money that it got labeled a bust when it did not break box office grosses. Those two movies are always connected in my mind. Both were crazy behind the scenes, both almost bankrupted their studios, both got Oscar nominations for Best Picture, both made some good money at box office and both are labeled “bombs” by history. Thanks for stopping…good stuff as always.

    1. Hey Dan. As always thanks for providing this information..and in this case some massive lists. Wow….surprised he is that high on the list….I would have guessed he would be lucky to make the Top 1000…which less…getting real close to the Top 100. Hmmmm…not many people seemed to work with him a lot….looks like two movies is the most. I case his lifestyle off camera might have had people avoiding working with him after the first time. Not a very impressive list of Oscar-winning co-stars….for an actor that made movies for 6 decades…figured his total would be much higher. Good stuff as always,

  3. I have seen 9 Richard Harris movies. That is less than I thought. Four of them are in the top 10.

The HIGHEST rated movie I have seen is Unforgiven.

The highest rated movie I have NOT seen is Gladiator.

The LOWEST rated movie I have seen is The Cassandra Crossing.

    Favourite Richard Harris Movies:

The Guns of Navarone (he’s a guest star)
    Unforgiven
The Wreck of the Mary Deare

Other Richard Harris Movie I Have Seen:

    Mutiny on the Bounty
Camelot (was a bit too long and I don’t enjoy David Hemmings films)
    Major Dundee
    Shake Hands with the Devil
    The Heroes of Telemark
    The Cassandra Crossing

    1. Hey Flora…thanks for checking out our Richard Harris page. I have seen 18 of Harris’ movies, So my total doubles your 9. Of your three favorites, Unforgiven is my favorite. Harris’ part is small but very memorable. His scenes with Hackman are pretty amazing. It was a Hawaii reunion…as they both appeared in that 1960s blockbuster…though Hackman was pretty much unknown. I thought Camelot was ok,….which I guess is good for me, since I am not a musical fan. Good feedback as always,

  4. “Richard Harris, like Peter O’Toole, is reputed to be a hell-raiser in real life. This rugged, pugnacious quality comes through on the screen, adding drive to his performances.” Rating The Movie Stars book 1983

Their 4 Star Richard Harris Movie Performances:
1959’s The Wreck of the Mary Deare
    1963’s This Sporting Life
    1964’s Red Desert
    1970’s A Man Called Horse
    1970’s The Molly Maguires

    1. HI JOEL I was tempted to keep, and try to pass off as my own, that astute observation of yours about Harris but nobody on this site you would have been fooled: the Great Ones like yourself say and write things that the rest of us can’t even THINK.

Regarding Richard’s reputation as a hell-raiser, you perhaps should have qualified the statement by adding “when and where he knew he could get away with it.”

For example Harris was a pal of Mitchum at one time and the pair of them were in Ireland around 1960 making A Terrible Beauty [aka The Night Fighters] about the Provisional Irish Republican Army. One night they were in a Dublin bar together and a young crippled man came in with his girlfriend who went over to Mitchum and asked for his autograph.

Mitch took the book and reportedly wrote in it “I’d love to **** you. Signed Kirk Douglas,” whereupon the young man approached Mitchum and accused him of being needlessly offensive. According to the press reports Mitchum and Harris stood up as if to manhandle the young fellow, whereupon several hardened labouring men drinking in the bar intervened and advised the two actors that if they laid a hand on the cripple they should first book an ambulance for themselves.

Wisely the two thespians immediately left the bar but if making a nuisance of yourself and being a rude, coarse bully and a drunk is hell-raising then Harris was certainly that.

      1. Reportedly Brando WAS, even unreasonably, difficult to get on with if he didn’t like you but in fairness to Marlon, Harris didn’t get on with fellow thespians generally either and Charlton Heston [who DID have a warm friendship with The Great Mumbler] is but one example of Harris’ disagreeable attitude to many of his fellow performers.

Also in an interview that I saw Harris said that he had never liked any thespians at all except Sir Sean Connery, which strikes me as the sort of anti-social thing that the obnoxious W.C Fields would have publicly admitted to. Fields [who complained about his neighbour Deanna Durbin practicing her singing] is alleged to have once said “A man who hates children can’t be all bad.”

Conversely Brando could be a generous friend to other actors according to Sir Maurice Micklewhite and David Niven whom, according to the latter, Marlon helped sort out documentation difficulties when Niven was in the States one time. Female stars who sang Brando’s praises in interviews that I have seen were Jean Simmons, Jane Fonda and Liz Taylor.

Certainly not everyone on the Mutiny on the Bounty production disliked Brando: his leading lady Tarita Teriipaia married him and stayed so for 10 years! As for Harris, perhaps he should have given some consideration as to why Brando didn’t like him in particular and maybe Richard could have done well to head the Biblical advice “Physician heal thyself!” [ King James’ version – Luke 4:23]. Certainly Harris seems to have been obsessed with Brando more than he was with Richard : if Marlon ever got worked up in later life about Harris it has escaped me.

Harris on Brando [TV interview] “As an actor he can do anything except comedy. He’s hopeless at that.”

      2. In my post to you I referred to the Provisional Irish Republican Army[aka The Provos]. That was incorrect as the Mitchum/Harris film concerned was I think set during the 2nd World War and certainly the movie itself was made around 1960.

In those times the organisation was I believe known simply as the Irish Republican Army [or IRA] and when the late 1960s Troubles in Ireland broke out the republican movement over here split and the Provos emerged from that split, so that it was only from December 1969 that The Provisional IRA came into being and my generation that lived through those dark days has always know them as The Provos.

Certainly any of those wild Provo boys would have with ease sorted out Mitchum and Harris in the real world and if “hell-raiser” Richard had fallen foul of them he would have seen what “hell” was really all about [and maybe thought of Brando as almost a Guardian Angel] – “cut” would have had nothing to do with the instructions of one of Harris’ directors!

I apologise for the error that my “automatic pilot” initially made but you might well be aware that when I correspond with you I am so overawed that I am apt to make mistakes as many of us on this site regard you as THE MASTER. [You are indeed in good company there because that was how the great Brit thespian Sir Joh Mills used to refer to the legendary Sir Noel Coward.]

  5. Beating Bob to the Marlon Brando punch.

Richard Harris on working on Mutiny on the Bounty. “The whole picture was just a large dreadful nightmare for me, and Brando was just a large dreadful nightmare for me, and I’d prefer to forget both as soon as my nerves recover from the ordeal.” – From Brando – by Peter Manso. A book I own.
