  1. Regarding DeNiro-I think you can probably guess that I have not seen every film he has made and that he is one of those actors on the cusp of a generation for me that are after the studio system but in the business long enough that I can actually name a lot of his films, whether I have seem them or not. I cannot say that I plan on eventually seeing all his films. I simply don’t think I am ready for Taxi Driver and I am not sure when I will be. I have already stated in your Brando hub that I’m not ready for The Godfather films and don’t plan on seeing them. I will likely never see the Deer Hunter-ever. Recent comedies don’t amuse me -I haven’t seen the Fockers films.

I think you are seeing a theme here where his best dramas I’m not yet ready to see in my stage of my life, and his comedies don’t interest me for the most part (no big surprise as I’m not a big fan of comedies).

But here it goes:I will focus on movie scores only as I think it isn’t logical to talk about top ten films in this movie page:

I have seen a grand total of seven of his films. you heard me. Just seven. None of them appear in the critics top ten. Really.

    Alphabetically :

    Analyse That

    Analyse This

    Awakenings (very depressing)

Cape Fear (for the original film stars cameos)

    Mad Dog and Glory

Showtime (Shatner as himself as a cop show expect, very funny)

Wag the Dog (my favourite of his films)

The Untouchables (a close second as to enjoyability, but I don’t buy Costner as much as his predecessor)

    and regarding mobsters being cool-

as someone who is a quarter Italian, this is precisely why I *hate* mob films beginning with The Godfather-I am not talking quality of the movie-I’m talking about making it cool to be a gangster. Before then, mobsters were killed or convicted. They were the bad guys. the *G-Men* were cool. Everyone knew that then. Italians are an oddity in Hollywood. Other ethnic groups get angy when pfilms portray stereotypes and refuse to play these stereotyped roles. Italians complain too, but Italian actors agree to play them, even after they have made enough money to choose their roles. Brando was French, not Italian. I do not get DeNiro or Pacino. I really don’t.

    1. Hey Flora thanks for the great comment….only seven…let me count and see how many I have seen…I have 46 of his movies….looking at your list I am surprised you have not watched Night and the City…if only to compare to the Widmark classic. I think I can recommend a few of his non gangster movies….Backdraft is an excellent Ron Howard movie…New York, New York is a great musical drama…with a crappy ending but still great music…..and Men of Honor which is kinda of a movie made in the classic style.

I can see why you do not get Pacino and DeNiro….I have never been a huge fan of Pacino…but I do like DeNiro a little better.

      1. okay, I will look for those films. I always love musicals, so I am sure I will like New York, New York even with the ending you say is crappy.

        1. Hey Flora, of the three I suggested…..New York, New York is the way to go…..and some people think the ending is a perfect ending…..I just do not like the ending.

  2. Very nicely done Cogerson, I am getting a kick of seeing him age through the photos you picked. The first one he looks almost unrecognizable, so young and handsome. I think some of his gangster movies are good but way too violent for me. Joe Pesci’s deaths in GoodFellas and Casino, are just brutal.

I have always liked his lighter work. I love King of Comedy, the first time I think Jerry Lewis ever really acted. Stanley and Iris is a great love story. Lots of great movies on this list, makes me want to see a Robert DeNiro movie tonight.

    1. Thanks for stopping by KellyE. Yep you can watch the man age before your eyes in his movies and some of this photos. I guess I should have attached the photos in oldest photo to newest photo…but I will say the man is doing awesome as he approaches 70. Pesci does indeed go down hard in the two movies you mentioned…at least in Good Fellas it was quick. I remember watching King of Comedy many many times on HBO back in the early 80s….a strange but good movie…and I agree Jerry Lewis is outstanding in the movie…thanks for checking out the page.

  3. I know I am a lowly 3 commenter, but I am glad you picked one of the great actors out there today. First movie 1965, I did not know he had been acting for almost 10 years before he made Godfather Part 2. Good Fellas is the best movie I have ever seen. “Am I funny like a clown?” love it.

As for your Taxi Driver debate, I actually think it should be a little further down the list. As for Meet the Parents it is a modern day classic, when Deniro dies I bet Meet the Parents franchise will be one of the movies that he is remembered for.

Mad Dog and Glory is way too slow paced and I think it would have better if Murray and Deniro would have switched roles.

Great movie page with lots of great movies from a great actor. Keep up the great work.

    1. Hey hinton1966….thanks for the comment…not bad for a level 3….lol…..great points in your comment…I am glad you agree with me about Taxi Driver….sorry you did not like Mad Dog and Glory….I agree Good Fellas is a classic…thanks for stopping by and voting and commenting.

  4. Dear Mr. DeNiro,

Where do I start? I have so much to tell you. I will start with I consider you a remarkable and outstanding actor and person. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think it was you who went aboove and beyond after 9/11 to supply delicious food to the rescuers at Ground Zero. Congrats to you on your recovery from Prostate Cancer I hope you continue on the road to recovery. How about a shout-out to the Prostate Cancer Foundations who are trying their best to help fund research to possibly save more lives. It would be very much appreciated by many.

On to the movies…Casino, Heat, Godfather, Goodfellas…you made me want to join a MOB! No kidding! You made being a gangster look real cool (as did Joe Pesci)! I have watched these movies more times then I can remember!

Meet The Parents … “I’m watching you” with the hand gesture, I use it on my son-in-laws frequently! Thank you for that, it works!!!

Thank you Mr. DeNiro for years of entertainment and I hope you have many more years ahead of you!!!

Next time I’m in NYC I’ll be sure and visit one of your many restaurants! (Pssst…PCF Groups need you)

    Your biggest fan,

    Sunshine

    1. Great comment Sunshine625….awesome to read that he did so much stuff for the 9/11 workers, I had not read that information at all. I am sure you are not the only person he made think about joining the mob…he was the perfect choice for Good Fellas. As for the delivery of the letter….I think I will be seeing Bobby some time this weekend….and I will deliver it…..thanks for stopping by and posting this great comment.

  5. “You lookin’ at me?” One of the greatest living actors.

I’ll have to side with the critics score over your moviescore Cogerson, Meet the Parents over Taxi Driver? Not a chance! This is where the moviescore can be misleading. Parents is a funny film but not in the same league as many of the great films De Niro is associated with.

My favourite movie that De Niro appears in is Godfather II, but my favourite De Niro movie has always been Taxi Driver, if that makes any sense. Goodfellas is up there too.

Cape Fear, Untouchables, Heat, Casino so many great films a shame he only makes comedies now.

Midnight Run is another much watched fave. especially back in the video days.

Hey you’re not the only one who liked Mad Dog and Glory (I’m also a bit of an Uma Thurman fan). 🙂

I didn’t know he was battling prostate cancer.

Another awesome page Cogerson useful and interesting.

    1. Hey Steve thanks for the comments. I think Taxi Driver is a classic….but the violence has scared many people away from the movie…thus its box office numbers were never much to talk about….which hurts its score. Critics and audiences agree with you and it comes in 3rd on that list…so Movie Score only drops it a couple spots…but I understand your point.

I agree he has a bunch of great movies…my personal top 5 would be Heat, Mad Dog and Glory, Backdraft, Good Fellas, and Midnight Run…I like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull but they are not movies I like to watch over and over.

Which I am glad somebody else likes Mad Dog….I like all the characters in the movie…I think it is David Caruso’s best part ever.

William Holden will be soon….even if he does not win this poll….Robert Wuhl is a character actor who now does a sports talk show….and he is always talking about movies…so I figure a movie hub on him might get his attention….he is best known as Arliss from HBO….or Bull Durham, Good Morning Vietnam and Batman.

And finally thanks for the compliment on the page.
