If you do a comment….please ignore the email address and website section.
1 I admired Robert’s touching performance as Boo Radley In To Kill a Mockingbird but even then I could never have predicted that he would go on to be a member of that club of fine modern screen actors that includes giants like Pacino and De Niro.
2 Apart from that movie and the Godfather films other flicks in which I enjoyed Duvall were The Natural, Days of Thunder and what was probablyy his best STAND ALONE movie the Oscar winning success Tender Mercies. For posterity however his greatest impact may well have been in Apocalypse Now. Even today film historians will regularly mention Col Kilgore’s callous line “I love the smell of napalm in the morning,” while Kilgore’s attack on a Vietnam village to the accompaniment of Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries is now firmly lodged in American war movies folklore.
3 This is a very comprehensive page and most welcome update that befits a performer said to be one of the greatest character actors of all time and the 2nd paragraph of this page demonstratesg why many regard Robert as deserving that reputation.
POSTSCRIPT TO MY PREVIOUS POST:
Duvall is ranked No 17 in IMDB’s “Ultimate list of the 100 Greatest Actors of All Time” just a few places below Lord Olivier, Sir Maurice Micklewhite and Tracy.
Hey Bob….mmmmmm…..17th is pretty impressive….but I am not sure he is that high on my list…and I really like him.
Thanks for adding this information.
Hey Bob
1. Thanks for checking out our newly remodeled Duvall page.
2. I do not think you were alone in not thinking he was going to be a huge star…heck it took him almost 10 years after Mockingbird to reach that level.
3. His role in Apocalypse Now is an all-time clsssic. Even more amazing is that the role is so short….but what a lasting memory he made in that movie.
4. Sadly I think there are not too many more Duvall movies coming….I have always hoped him and Caine would make a third movie.
Good feedback as always.
He has an amazing presence, and many of the roles he’s previously played are considered iconic characters. In my opinion, he doesn’t seem to be getting as much attention as he deserves. Glad to see him getting some respect on this website.
Hey The Dude….a well thought out comment. Glad you found my Duvall page….I have been a fan of his for years now.
Just watched The Judge. It is amazing that even over 80 the man is still performing at the top of his game.
Hey Timlin….I agree with you 100%. He really shines in The Judge….even picking up his 7th Oscar nomination….7 is a pretty hefty number when it comes to Oscar nominations.
My uncle always said that I could have been a rancher.”
Robert Duvall
Duvall is such a Hollywood icon. When you begin to talk about great film making sooner rather than later, you realise ‘Oh. Robert Duval was in that picture.”
Great Page Cogerson.
Second Hand Lions is pure entertainment.
Hey mckbirdbks thanks for checking out my Robert Duvall hub….the man has been good in so many different movies in really is hard to pick the best one. He has classic movies from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s….and if you include Get Low…the 2010s….that is alot of decades.
Is your quote you listed from a movie of from Duvall? Thanks for checking out this page.
Mckbirdnicks
You know, I just LOVE this guy. He is one of my all time favorites. Open Range, I thought he was excellent in. Like you, I also liked Second Hand Lion.
He is such a unique actor, he makes most movies he is in, much better
Hey CMerritt…the first time I saw Secondhand Lion…I laughed so hard at the ending…I remember going to bed and I still had the giggles…and I woke my wife up. If you remember one of the last lines…”As near as we can figure they were trying to fly through the barn upside down” what a way to go. I just recently watched him in Get Low he is outstanding in possible his last great role…thanks for stopping by.
