Want to know the best Robert Redford movies? How about the worst Robert Redford movies? Curious about Robert Redford’s box office grosses or which Robert Redford movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Robert Redford movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.
Having taken a small break from writing these movie pages, I decided it was time to do another movie page . At first I thought I would do a Robert Mitchum page but I got stuck with his many many movies in the 1940s, then I thought I would make my mother-in-law happy and do a Disney Live Action Movie page but then I realized that would be a major undertaking as there are hundreds of Disney Live Action movies. Next I thought I would do an Elvis Presley page but then I realized that I have never even seen one Elvis Presley movie.
Then James Coburn popped into my head but turns out many of his movies are pretty bad and he has supporting roles in most of his movies. So there I was stuck in a rut when I saw a movie clip of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and I realized the Sundance Kid was the way to get out of this rut. So here you go…..a Robert Redford page.
His IMDb page shows 71 acting credits and 10 directing credits from 1960-2017. This page will rank 47 Robert Redford movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television appearances, cameos and straight to DVD movies were not included in the rankings.

just received an email notification for your new movie page Bruce, seven hours late. 🙂
I’m not a huge fan of Robert Redford but I do respect him as an actor and director.
I’ve seen 16 of the 36 films you’ve listed. The top 3 in your moviescore I would have predicted, of the three I enjoyed Butch Cassidy the most and that remains my favourite Robert Redford movie.
I’ve seen 8 from the highest grossing chart, I still have not seen The Way We Were and The Electric Horseman.
And 9 from the critics chart, missed The Candidate.
I was more into Bronson and McQueen rather than Redford and Newman in those days.
Out of Africa I like more for John Barry’s music and the photography than anything else.
A Bridge Too Far is one of my fave war films, Attenborough wanted Steve McQueen for Redfords part but he wanted too much money so he went with Redford instead. McQueen than changed his mind and wanted in but Attenborough told him it was too late.
Another excellent movie page Bruce, well done amigo. I think you should give James Coburn a chance, he was one of the Magnificent Seven, in The Great Escape and Our Man Flint!
Charles Bronson would be a fun movie page too. :
As for Elvis the Pelvis I’ve seen nearly all his films a number of times, he shamelessly admitted. I was a big fan in my youth, bought all his records. “You ain’t nuthin’ but a hound dog…” [Stop it Steve!]
Hey Steve….somehow I missed the entire Elvis Presley bandwagon….growing up my best friend’s mom loved Elvis and his passing was the first time I really thought about death as a child….because my friend’s mom was so upset that the King had passed…and I could not figure out why so was crying so much.
Elvis made 31 movies from 1957 to 1969….that is almost three films a year for 11 years…a pretty impressive output of work. So Flora recommended some Elvis movies…which ones would be good ones to start with? Thanks for your comments and visit.
Hey Steve….well the tally count is me 20 Redford movies, Flora 18 Redford movies and you 16 Redford movies….it is very rare that you finish last in this little competition. I have been a huge fan of A Bridge Too Far every since I saw it twice at theaters back in the summer of 1977. I always get a kick out seeing all the stars and look forward to each of their very small parts.
James Coburn is one of my favorites, so I am sure I will be giving him a hub very soon…I think Steve Buscemi might be the current James Coburn actor…it seems that they make whatever movie they are in better just because of their performance.
Charles Bronson would be another awesome hub subject as well. Thanks for the votes up and for checking out my latest movie page.
And my final post: Favourites.
I think you will be able to guess most of them. I have a lot of favourites of his that don’t fall under my favourite genre, but: With the exception of Butch Cassidy, you will notice they all relate to a particular type of genre: Thriller/Crime/Spy
Listed Alphabetically-my top 5:
All the President’s Men
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Great Waldo Pepper (not usually my favourite genre, but…fun)
Three Days of the Condor
The Sting
I only listed 5 because he has made only 36 films.
There are no films of his that I wish I hadn’t seen, even though some genres are not what I watch unless I love the actors.
Quickly-I love him on The Twilight Zone-he played Death. Beautiful.
Hey Flora ….nice Top 5 list….Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All The President’s Men, The Sting and Three Days of the Condor would make my Top 5 as well…I have yet to see The Great Waldo Pepper….so I would have to include A Bridge Too Far in my list….granted his role is pretty small….although he got paid a ton of money for the movie…it is still one of my favorites.
I think his next film due later this year….might be right up your alley….it is called The Company You Keep and is a thriller co-starring Shia LaBeouf and Julie Christie….he is also the director. I appreciate all your comments, suggestions and compliments…they are all greatly appreciated.
Hello Cogerson! How is the fam and the little one? 🙂 I just added this to my hubpages file ‘Cogerson Movies – Research.’ It is not full yet, and some work awaits.
Once again synchronicity hits me over the head. This awesome hub provides for gathering memories, re-establishing values, and pointedly offering a market study(s). I truly appreciate your diligent and hard work shared. Thank You!
This movie page hits home today, since watching Jeremiah last Sunday on a VHS tape of all things. I was going to pop in ‘The Natural,’ but took a nap instead – old guy suff 🙂 I would really like to see
‘Little Fauss and Big Halsy’ again. Even though Bonnie and Clyde was released earlier, I saw their movie first. I became a Michael J. Pollard fan because of Robert Redford. Funny how film influences us differently at different times in our lives.
Have a great week!
Hey tsmog…..everything is going great with me and my family…hope the same is true for you. I greatly appreciate all the kind words in your comment. I think Jeremiah Johnson was one of the first Redford movies I ever watched. I have not seen Little Fauss and Big Halsy but I have also always enjoyed Michael J. Pollard’s unique movie character….so I would like to see that movie. I will be sure to have some new material for your Cogerson Research hub. Thanks for stopping and for such nice words.
Top ten lists:
Top ten box office hits:
I have seen nine of these. I am missing only The Electric Horseman. (Odd for me as usually I haven’t seen many box office hits of other stars-perhaps it’s because he hasn’t made a large number of films)
Top ten Critics list:
Again, I have seen 9 of these. The only one I am missing is Sneakers.
Top ten movie score: 9 of them, and I already mentioned the one I am missing.
I have seen 14 of his top 20 films- much lower than 90%, but still above 50%: I’ve seen 70%.
I have seen 17 of his top 30 films-another plunge, but still over 50% at 57%.
Overall: I’ve seen 18 of his films-Exactly 50%. I thought that I maybe I wouldn’t have seen any of his bottom six when I start reading the hub, but there is Havana.
Films on the top of my to-see list:
Sneakers-I must round off the top ten critics
The Electric Horseman-I must round off the top ten box office
The Chase-right genre and era for me
Spy Game-my kind of genre
Hey Flora…I have seen 20 of his movies…surprising to me that I have somehow missed 16 of his movies. I am 10 for 10 in the box office and movie score tables…and 9 of 10 in the critics table…only Barefoot in the Park needs to be watched.
I have seen 3 of the 4 on your “to see list”…..with only The Chase being on my “to see list”….the other three are decent but not great movies….with Spy Game probably being the best of that bunch.
Oh, I knew you must be working on a new movie page. 🙂 Robert is one of my favourites. I happened to be on my feed page when you published this – a bit of an irony since you have been busy and I was about to turn off the computer-and I sent it to Twitter and Facebook right away.
Now I will read this over slowly like is my normal practice and write about Robert like I’ve done in other movie pages of yours.
Hey Flora…yep I finally got motivated to do another pages…I am pretty sure this was my longest time period between pages for me i I will check out your comments in the morning as I am headed to bed myself….hope everything is going well for you and Amy.
I love reading your thoughts of which movie page to do next. I thought that one of the reasons you were taking a long time was that you were indeed doing the Disney live action Movie Page and knew how big that would be. The bigger the page, the longer the time it will take to do it.
I would love a Mitchum page, of course. But Redford is not only still alive, but not retired so it is easier to find box office information on him and thus takes less research. I love James Coburn and well, I’m a fan of supporting actors-not a lot of your readers are, though.
You haven’t seen an Elvis film yet? Oh, can I give you recommendations? I’ve not seen all his films, but do indeed check out Jailhouse Rock, Viva Las Vegas, Blue Hawaii and Love Me Tender. If you never see any other films of his, these are the films to see.
Hey Flora….glad you enjoyed the look behind the scenes in my decision process….I think I will do all of the rejected subjects at some point….with the Disney Live Action movies probably requiring two or three different hubs to accomplish that. I appreciate your Elvis recommendations…I was very surprised to see he had made so many movies during his pretty short movie career.
