Want to know the best Robert Redford movies?  How about the worst Robert Redford movies?  Curious about Robert Redford’s box office grosses or which Robert Redford movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Robert Redford movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.

Having taken a small break from writing these movie pages, I decided it was time to do another movie page .  At first I thought I would do a Robert Mitchum page but I got stuck with his many many movies in the 1940s, then I thought I would make my mother-in-law happy and do a Disney Live Action Movie page but then I realized that would be a major undertaking as there are hundreds of Disney Live Action movies. Next I thought I would do an Elvis Presley page but then I realized that I have never even seen one Elvis Presley movie.

Then James Coburn popped into my head but turns out many of his movies are pretty bad and he has supporting roles in most of his movies. So there I was stuck in a rut when I saw a movie clip of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and I realized the Sundance Kid was the way to get out of this rut. So here you go…..a Robert Redford page.

His IMDb page shows 71 acting credits and 10 directing credits from 1960-2017. This page will rank 47 Robert Redford movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. Television appearances, cameos and straight to DVD movies were not included in the rankings.

  1. Hi Bruce; While he’s not one of my favorite actors, he’s been in some good movies. Actually, all my favorite films that he’s been in (All the Presdient’s men, the Sting, Butch Cassiday and the Sundance Kid) I thought he was blown off the screen by his co-star (Dustin Hoffman and Paul Newman–who were both incredible actors) so I think I prefer him as a sidekick than as a leading man.

He’s a pretty good director, though.

    1. Hey Rob….thanks for stopping by, especially since he is not one of your favorites. I think you make a good point about him being a sidekick……all of the Redford movies I like he had lots of help….people like Newman, Hoffman, Streisand, Fonda and Streep. I think the only stand alone Redford movie I like is Three Days of the Condor. As always I greatly appreciate your comments.

  2. The Cogerson Movie/Actor Database is mind boggling! Though you were considering some good ones your pick for this movie page was truly a good one. I think Robert Redford has been underestimated. The man’s got talent! As for Elvis, I’ve been a fan for more years than I care to talk about but I have to admit his acting leaves a little something to be desired. His first movie, Love Me Tender, may be his best. Keep the figures and stats coming, you’re educating all of us!

    1. Hey tillsontitan…thanks for such nice words and compliments. I think Redford’s good looks have been held against him when people think about his acting skills. I find it hard to believe that he is closing in own 80 years of age…he will always be the Sundance Kid to me. I will have to check out Elvis’s Love Me Tender in the near future…thanks for the recommendation

  3. HEY COGERSON – THANKS FOR RUNNING THE STORY ABOUT THE CAR BETWEEN REDFORD AND NEWMAN. I ENJOYED IT. IT IS ALWAYS GOOD TO HEAR SOME PERSONAL MOMENTOS.

    1. Bern: What’s your favourite movie of the two Redford and Newman did together? Can you decide?

      1. Hey Flora…I Confess, really makes you think…I wonder what I would do in that situation….you have to give Clift’s character credit….he was going to go with God’s will no matter how things turned against hi. I thought Karl Malden was pretty impressive as well.

      2. Hey Flora…BERN said she likes The Sting better than Butch and Sundance…but they are both excellent movies…my mom happens to be wrong…as we all know Butch and Sundance is a much better movie….lol.

        1. HEY SON – YOU ASKED MY OPINION AND I GAVE IT. DON’T YOU KNOW YOUR MOM IS ALWAYS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!! After you asked me I thought I would check out this site once again…I have seen The Promise with Stephen Collins – a love story and I have it on the VCR. Since you showed me how to play the movies on VCR once again I have been watching some movies that I taped so long ago…well I checked out the movie book you gave me and it said “Viewer runs screaming from room”…well, I thought it was a good love story and I am planning on watching it again soon…IT WAS CLASSIED AS A BOMB BUT NOT FOR ME. THANKS FOR HELPING ME FIGURE OUT HOW TO WATCH THESE OLD MOVIES ON VCR TAPES. HAVE A GREAT WEEK SON….As you know living in Montreal one had to be 16 to get into the movie theater but I have certainly made up for it. When I still lived in Montreal I would talk a friend to go to a movie theater and in those days there were double features – news, coming attractions, a cartoon and then two movies. We would go to the Chicken Chalet for lunch and go to another double feature – four movies in all. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT SON???

          1. Hey BERN1960….yes Mom you are normally right…but I fear in this case you picked the wrong Redford/Newman movie….without the success of Butch their would have been no The Sting….and we all know the second movie is never as good as the first one.

I am glad that you enjoy The Promise…Stephen Collins is still around…so I would have to say he survived the bad press The Promise got him.

Hard to believe you had to wait until you were 16 to see a movie…thank goodness I did not have to wait that long to see movies….four movies in one day….very impressive….I think my record is seeing three movies at the theater in one day….I guess I will have to tie and eventually break your record….lol. Thanks for sharing your Montreal movie days, it is greatly appreciated.

          2. WELL, ONE CAN NEVER BE RIGHT ALL THE TIME, HA, HA, HA. I FAILED TO MENTION THAT I WENT TO DOUBLE FEATURES QUITE A LOT AND ENJOYED ALL THE MOVIES. IT WAS USUALLY ON A SUNDAY…ALSO AS A NOTE – SOMETIMES ONE WOULD GO TO A MOVIE AND YOU MIGHT MISS THE BEGINNING – ESPECIALLY ON A DOUBLE FEATURE SO ONE WAITED FOR THE FIRST MOVIE TO START OVER AND YOU COULD CATCH UP TO WHAT YOU MISSED AND IF YOU WANTED YOU COULD WATCH THE MOVIE OVER AGAIN. I IMAGINE THAT TODAY IF YOU MISS THE BEGINNING IT WOULD BE TOUGH LUCK – WOULD THEY ASK YOU TO LEAVE TODAY???

          3. Hey BERN1960….I do not think you would be allowed to stay and watch until you caught up with the first film….today they empty the theater clean it up and reseat about 30 to 45 minutes later….plus I think there has only been one double feature in the last 30 years….and that one bombed at the box office. I think double features and baseball double headers are things of the past that will probably never be back….thanks for sharing your stories from the past.

    2. Hey Bern…glad you liked the link…and thanks again for mentioning it in your first comment.

  4. Bruce, Robert Redford has produced an amazing body of work both as an actor and a director. I have seen a lot of his acted movies and quite a few of his directed ones too. Of his acting movies, The Natural is my favourite, mainly for baseball reasons but also because I think he gives a fine, understated performance in it. I also love The Sting and Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid.

Of his directed movies I would pick Ordinary People and A River Runs Through It, both of which I really enjoyed.

    1. Hey Jools99…thanks for stopping by and checking out my Redford hub. I like The Natural as well….I always get a kick out of it when I see the ball hitting the light finale…which seems to make the highlight reels for lots of different subjects. I have yet to see A River Runs Through It….not sure how I have accomplished this as it is a movie I want to see. I think Butch and Sundance is a Top 5 movie of all-time for me….I have been unable to watch it since Newman passed away…but I think the time has come to re-watch it again….I think I have seen over a 100 times. Thanks for the comments.
