Want to know the best Rod Steiger movies? How about the worst Rod Steiger movies? Curious about Rod Steiger box office grosses or which Rod Steiger movie picked up the most Oscar® nominations? Need to know which Rod Steiger movie got the best reviews from critics and audiences and which got the worst reviews? Well you have come to the right place….because we have all of that information.
Rod Steiger (1925-2002) was an Oscar® winning American actor. Steiger was noted for his portrayal of offbeat, often volatile and crazed characters. He is also associated with “method acting”. His IMDb page shows 148 acting credits. This page will rank 44 Rod Steiger movies from Best to Worst in six different sortable columns of information. His many television appearances, his international and movies never released in theaters were not included in the rankings.
Drivel part of the page: This website is currently in the process of updating all of our pages from static to dynamic pages. That update is pretty much taking all of our spare time. That being said…we felt it was important to keep new material coming….so we looked at our recent requests….and saw that Bob had requested this page.
Rod Steiger Movies Can Be Ranked 6 Ways In This Table
The really cool thing about this table is that it is “user-sortable”. Rank the movies anyway you want.
- Sort Rod Steiger movies by co-stars of his movies.
- Sort Rod Steiger movies by adjusted domestic box office grosses using current movie ticket cost (in millions)
- Sort Rod Steiger movies by yearly domestic box office rank (based on movies in our database for the year the movie was made)
- Sort Rod Steiger movies how they were received by critics and audiences. 60% rating or higher should indicate a good movie.
- Sort by how many Oscar® nominations each Rod Steiger movie received and how many Oscar® wins each Rod Steiger movie won.
- Sort Rod Steiger movies by Ultimate Movie Rankings (UMR) Score. UMR Score puts box office, reviews and awards into a mathematical equation and gives each movie a score.

Ten Possibly Interesting Facts About Rod Steiger
1. Rodney Stephen Steiger was born in Westhampton, New York in 1925. Both of his parents were vaudevillians.
2. Rod Steiger dropped out of high school at age 16 and joined the Navy. He saw action during World War 2 in the Pacific on a destroyer.
3. After the war, Rod Steiger began his acting career with television roles in 1947, and went on to garner critical acclaim for his portrayal of the main character in the teleplay, Marty (1953). Ernest Borgnine would win the Best Actor Oscar® for playing Marty when it reached theaters in 1955.
4. Behind the scenes trivia – Most of the solo shots of Steiger during the famous taxicab scene in 1954’s On the Waterfront were done after Marlon Brando had left for the day. Brando had it in his contract that he could finish shooting before the normal quitting time so that he could make his daily session with his psychiatrist. Steiger was deeply hurt and annoyed at Brando’s rudeness and lack of courtesy to a fellow actor, as it was customary, in a two-shot, for an actor in close-up to be fed his lines by the other actor or for the other actor to just be there so the first actor would have him him or her to play to. Steiger used his negative emotions to enhance his performance, and though he paid tribute to Brando as a great actor, he personally loathed him thereafter. Director Elia Kazan stood in for Brando in the back of the cab so Steiger would have someone to emote to.
5. Rod Steiger was offered the title role in 1970’s Patton, but refused the role, saying, “I’m not going to glorify war.” The role was then given to George C. Scott, who won the Oscar® for the role. Steiger calls this refusal his “dumbest career move”.
6. Rod Steiger’s favorite all-time movies was 1937’s The Good Earth starring Paul Muni.
7. Rod Steiger was married five times…..he had two children.
8. Rod Steiger was asked by director Norman Jewison to chew gum when playing the part of Gillespie in In The Heat of the Night. He resisted at first but then grew to love the idea, and eventually went through 263 packs of gum during the shooting of the film.
9. Rod Steiger received one of his three Oscar® nominations for 1965’s The Pawnbroker. If you ever watch The Pawnbroker…..keep a look out for a very young Morgan Freeman in his film debut.

1 Bruce’s paragraph about Rod’s private beef with Brando rings true because certainly Brando did get the reputation for carrying on in the kind of manner that Steiger describes.
In a TV interview that I watched recently, filmed before Steiger’s death, Rod again complained about Marlon’s off-hand treatment of him during the making of On the Waterfront and in that interview Rod also criticised Elia Kazan the movie’s director for “co-operating with the Un-American Activities Committee” in the McCarthy era. Rod went on to say that if he had known about the latter he never would have worked with Kazan.
2 However in the same program the widely-respected Karl Malden who was of course another Waterfront key player cautioned people about believing everything that Steiger said. Malden elaborated by emphasising that whatever one thought of it Kazan’ “collaboration” with the Committee was well-known in the public domain at the time of Waterfront’s shooting so that in Karl’s opinion Rod was either lying about his own ignorance in the matter or else he had become isolated from reality.
3 There seems no doubt that Brando could be unreasonably difficult and contrary with some people and the way in which he allegedly treated Burt Reynolds is one example, but others like Jean Simmons and Jim Garner spoke glowingly of their experiences of Marlon as a person when filming Guys and Dolls/Desiree and Sayonara respectively. Even Glenn Ford who it was said quarrelled with MB on the Teahouse set paid tribute to Marlon’s on set professionalism in another interview that I saw recently. So I suppose that in fairness one would have had to at least heard Brando’s side of the Steiger story before coming to a conclusion.
Hey Bob….I would say the truth is somewhere in the middle…..Brando probably did it once or twice during the filming of the movie….and he was probably there when Malden saw it…..at this point this mystery will never be solved.
Elia Kazan is a lightening rod in Hollywood….even now. I remember when he got his Honorary Oscar and he got a luke warm applause at best. As for Brando…..I am sure he has some great stories and some horrible stories. One of my first mentor store managers told me this….”15% of the associates will love you……15% of the associates will hate you….the other 70% will be the ones that will make your job hard or easy…..keep that majority happy and your store will run well”…..over my many years I found it to be true.
Anyway…..we will put Reynolds, Steiger and Sinatra in the hate group and Garner and Simmons in the love group….as for the other 70% of thespians….think they were in awe of Mr. Marlon Brando…..thanks for the feedback on our Steiger page.
Rod Steiger was # 112 in 2006 on the Oracle of Bacon Top 1000 Center of the Hollywood Universe list. He’s now down to 163 but way back in the beginning, in 2000, the man was # 2. 2 I tell you then he hit # 1 around 2005. The man worked with Eric Roberts and Bess Flowers! These are all the people on the 2016 list who appeared in a film with him.

Hey Dan.
1. Thanks for these massive lists.
2. One of the facts I found on Steiger was the fact that he was number one on the Bacon Oracle lists.
3. I think that him still being in the Top 200 is pretty impressive.
4. 49 Oscar winners is pretty impressive….but almost half of those come from his appearance in The Player.
5. The 2000 list has tons of classic stars on the list. The man seems to have worked with almost everybody…which helped him get so high in the rankings.
Good feedback as always.
He gets a lot of help from The Longest Day too.
Rod Steiger, a great actor though he did tend to go over the top in some films. A video on Steiger is on the cards but not just yet.
I’ve seen 21 of the 44 films listed, nearly half. Favorites include – In the Heat of the Night, On the Waterfront, The Amityville Horror, The Longest Day, The Specialist, Mars Attacks!, Doctor Zhivago, The Illustrated Man, Run of the Arrow, A Fistful of Dynamite and Waterloo.
I haven’t seen Hurricane, Billy Mitchell or The Harder They Fall.
Doctor Zhivago was huge at the box office, over a billion in North America alone, adjusted gross. In recent years only The Force Awakens has neared a billion in domestic grosses.
It’s been ages since I saw Rodney’s The Pawnbroker, next time I watch it I’ll keep an eye out for Morgan Freeman.
Top work as usual Bruce. Vote Up!
Hey Steve.
1. Thanks for the visit, comment and tally count.
2. Sorry I have been absent from the board recently…….this process of flipping all the pages is not too difficult….but it as very time consuming.
3. Tally count….I am at 16 to your 21.
4. Of your favorites….I have seen them all except for Run of the Arrow and Waterloo. When Waterloo tanked….it shut down the Stanley Kubrick movie on Napolean. The producers got scared and pulled the plug.
5. When looking at the adjusted box office…Doctor Z is in 8th place….and the last one to reach 1 billion….The Exorcist is 9th on that list….so yes….it was a monster hit.
6. I would recommend his No Way To Treat A Lady…..it is a pretty good movie….with a young George Segal in the lead role.
Thanks for the feedback.
Just flipped our Best Actor Oscar winning page. I really like how this one turned out. https://www.ultimatemovierankings.com/best-actor-oscar-winners/
Of the 90 winners….we have pages on 74 of the actors…..or 73.33%
Hello Bruce,
To my surprise I saw 13 films of this very great actor. I would not have believed so much. I really liked On The Waterfront, F.I.S.T or The Big Knife, but his best performance is for me his role in In The Heat Of The Night. One of the biggest actor performance of the 1960’s, I think.
Excellent choice Bruce.
How did you arrive at #8 for the year with “Doctor Zhivago”. Of the films released in 1965, it was second, behind “The Sound Of Music”. Is the #8 because it made most of the money in ’66?
Hey Mark…..I wanted to blame Variety for that mistake…but they list it second place….so it must have been a typo that has been fixed. It is second of all the movies in my 1965 database…only trailing The Sound of Music. While Variety lists at the second biggest hit behind Thunderball. Thanks for the catch.
Love your site. I use it all the time for b.o. info on mine—Movies Ala Mark. I’ve always been fascinated by how well properties do or don’t do.
Hey mark….glad you are able to use our stats on your page…..good stuff on both sites.
Hey Laurent….tally count…Steve 21, me 16 and you at 13. You are pretty close. I agree the pinnacle of his career was The Heat of the Night. His UMR Top 5 is pretty impressive. Thanks for stopping by.
